"safemate foal alarm???"

Has anyone ever used the safemate foaling alarm?
It works on body temp. Looks pretty good to me.
Not 100% happy with the magic breed as my mare is always just sleeping when it goes off.
Has anyone tried any other foaling alarms that they are happy with?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

   Hi Cashi,

Have used both and prefer the Magic Breed. Have missed two with Safemate. One resulting in a very crook foal. This is not a reflection of the product itself but highlights the reason why I choose Magc Breed.

As for the sleeping mare. Hmm that sometimes is a problem. I have found however that my mares tend not to go down toooften when in final stages of pregnancy. They do however go down sometimes in the days of prep before foaling. Do you have it on for a long time before they foal?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

   Really???
That's no good then. I don't think you should miss any foals should you. I think i'll stick with the magic breed then... I did put it on quite early. She's a maiden mare and has been producing milk for quite some time and i'm just worried she's going to go early. I've taken the magic breed off her for a week or so and then i'll put it back on i think. She's got another 2 weeks to go still so i'm sure it was far too early to put on. I didn't think they lay down when so heavily in foal.
Thanks for your advice!

   Cashi,

If your mare has been dripping milk for a while it would be useful to test the milk for colostrum. And when the foal has been born have an IGG test.

Mares first milk produced is full of antibodies and in the first 24 hours the foal has the best chance of absorbing the colostrum and thus protecting itself from disease and infection. if our mare has been losing milk her colostrum may be compromised.

If a foal does not get good colostrum in the first 24 hours it leave them open to infection.

Possibly you already know this but just hught I would mention it toyou!

Good luck.

I know several people who use the safemate foaling alarm and it has worked 100%. They have used it with different mares and about 40 foals.

We used the magic breed and apart from having about 10 false alarms the night she foaled (we got up every time) we finally got to watch her have a beautiful appy filly in the early hours of the morning, a memory I will cherish forever as this was my first.
Cheers - Carol
