No stress... except that caused my his neurotic mother! hehehe! He has pollard at the moment but its not doing much. He gets 2 huge bin feeds a day and as much hay as he wants. All my other horses are great. We have heaps of grass & they all have shiny coats and dapples. Vet has checked him out and said physically he's fine. Blood test was all good too.

add 2 cups of full cream milk powder to every feed, also feed him weight lifter, equibix, and see if u can get ur hands on "cool choice" its a form of kibble, always keep a rug on him, the temp determines the type of rug, remember even if the air isn't cold, ur still maybe. also, maybe he's windsucking?

   Hi There,

Just like to offer some freindly tips that may help.

Did your vet check his teeth, it could seem as thoufh he is eating but if his teeth are worn and havent been filed down they may be very painful and he is trying his best to chew but doing morre harm then good. How is he when acceptin the bit.

If that isnt the problem you culd tyr adding mineral supplements to his diet, it can also depend on the age of the horse. He may need to be worked to build up the muscle tone aswell as the large amounts of feed he may be getting, if his belly is quiet bloated he may just need working everyday and see how that goes.

I owned a Standrad Bred gelding and he was 16.3 hands and needed working aswell as fedding eacxh day to keep his muscle down up as his size looked out of propoartion and sometimes his rib were visible.

even if you lunge him each day, or swim him iff you can as that awlays helps.

Maybe change his diet or talk to a nutrtionist as I had been given very good advice as I now own QH Mare who had foal 4 months ago and was given greta tips which have really helped her get back into show comdition. Also with the Fruit side of thimngs not to many apples as it isn't really good for there tummies, to much sugar can cause ther tummies to twist and go easy on molasses products if you can as it does the same thing.

Bets of luck it is all trial and erroro with theses, Inknow from experience.

Cheers

If he is happy to eat, good. It seems you may need to alter his diet. What and how much is he fed?

If I were you I would take him off the Breeda. Breeda is specially formulated for broodmares, it is scientifically rationed and balanced to provide broodmares with all the vitamin and mineral requirements they need to be broodmares. YOUR GELDING IS CLEARLY NOT A BROODMARE SO THE BREEDA MAY BE DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD! For example, a broodmare requires x amount of a particular mineral while your gelding may only rquire half of that amount. Excess of certain vitamins can actually prevent the horse's body from absorbing other vitamins/minerals and so your horse becomes unbalanced, having excess of some minerals and defficiency of others, this could just be the cause of your horse's weight problems.

Where are you based? If you've had bloods done and you are comfortable with your Vet, vet could give you some ideas.
I'm just a bit shy discussing in public - some very strong opinions on this board and it gets a bit scary.
With that here we go - after you are very sure that teeth are good and drenching up to date, chest clear and no underlying problem, it just depends on what you feed.
Horses need heaps of bulk, when mine are fully fed the ratio of oaten chaff:lucerne chaff:concentrate is 8:2:1.
The concentrate increases with the amount of work.
Pellets, whilst I don't really like them, help a horse to gain simply because the pellet is more easily utilised.
Saflower or corn oil, 1 - 2 cups daily will help.
I have a horse in my care whom I have just started on mashy potatoes and pumpkin! This is a desperation measure as the bugga is a bit too light - mind you he does an awful lot of running around.
Of course it should go without saying, good pasture (if you are that lucky).
Are you still riding this horse?
I look forward to the next installment. P

A friend of mine used to feed mashed pumpkin to her show horse. No one knock it - the thing looked amazing! My boy gets heaps of grass and as much grassy hay as he wants. There is a bit of lucerne in the hay too so probably about 6:2 ratio grassy:lucerne. He's in light work but soon to be heavy. Bulk wise he cant fit any more in his belly!
As for feed... i dont like pellets that much either but ill try anything that will work. Thinking oil is next on the list! Wish i had horse scales. Had those in England and it was great. We wieghed the horses weekly and updated the diet. Really want to keep the cost down too if i can... well as much as possible! Thought about equijewel but its REALLY expensive.
I'm in Brisbane. Where are you? Dont worry about peoples opinions. So what if they want to be nasty. Just ignore it. No one knows who anyone is so it doesnt matter. And if they do and they still want to be nasty then they are aren't worth knowing.

We could always discuss this via PM system.
I have two horse with me, they came about 10 weeks ago and were really anorexic. They were offered food but would just pick at it. Viatmin B injections sorted that out. Both were extremely thin. I tried Equijewel but found it not worth the cost.
I reckon you should stop working your horse until he/she is up to speed. These two skinnies were fed O/C, L/C, and a mixture of steamed rolled oats, steamed rolled barley, oil, Protexin (like horse Yalkult) Cool Horse and pony and Cool Command. Whilst they were so thin I had doubled the amount of concentrate. They werew also offered food about 6 times a day - small amounts very, very often.
By 7 weeks, they were looking like show-horses. P

A few people have said steamed barley. Might try that. Whats in protexin? Who makes it? How much?
He isnt thin enough to stop work & i cant due to overseas buyer coming in a month. He's only in light work at the moment. He gets his bucket feed twice a day but theres the equivalent of 6 small feeds in it - he takes all day to eat it though. I've never not been able to get a horse fat. All the thoroughbreds ive ever had have ended up looking like show hacks even when in 3day preparation! Its so frustrating. I think its more to do with the actual feed not the amount or work load. He doesnt even get sweaty in a ride. Maybe he needs multi vitamins?

   Hi Paris,

I sympathise with u. It has taken me a year of trying all types of different feeds etc to find what suited my horse best. In the end I found a feed called equibalance produced by milne feeds here in WA fattened mine up plus giving him all the hay he could eat plus barley/lupins and lucerne chaff. He's only 15 hands and eats well like a horse!! The other horses all look great on just hay and he needs to be fed like a racing/performance horse.

Good luck

Protexin is available from some feeds stores and the vet. It is usually used after an illness or heavy antiobiotic use to re-establish good bacteria in the gut. an imbalance will sometimes cause a horse to not thrive.
You said it takes all day for your horse to eat. Using the standard kitchen bucket as a guide, how much (how many buckets) would your horse get per day?
Oh, Protexin comes in a powder/granules as well as in an oil suspension. Expensive about $120 and would last 4 - 6 weeks. Usually wouldn't need it again. I'd wait until I knew it was required. J

This is a rather old fashioned notion taught to my by my grandfather that trained race horses (even though they are not that fat)lol
I used it on my horses and worked a charm, also never had any colic on any horse that "I have ever known of" that had this.
You could try it and it isn't too expensive.
A good old fashioned bran mash once a week. 2 part bran to one part polard mixed in with molasses made up with 1 lt hot water with just 1 tsp of epsom salts disolved in it.
You can throw in a carrot broken up but most horses love it. Make sure it is still warm when he has it.
The theory is that it cleans out there digestive system (not the runs) but a bit like a metamucil for gg's. That way when he eats he's retaining more nutrients from the feed.
You might want to start out with about half that amount, as you don't want sudden changes to diet.
Make sure he is checked for any early sign of arthritis as it can be a cause of weight loss.
Hope it helps, don't hear about them anymore but used to be common place, but if nothing else it is cheap and your horse will probably love it. Like horsey desert!

Taking all day to eat is NOT normal. Who did his teeth and when - vet or dentist. Reckon you should get them checked again. Steamed barley is good but I think the steamed rolled barley is as good and a lot less mucking around. what quantity per day is he getting. I only suggested to stop riding because if you followed my plan, ie oats and barley, you might find the horse a bit unpleasantly energetic!! Once he is carrying more weight then you could tone down his diet to a more reasonable level. Please keep in touch, would love to know how you go. cheers, P

He gets 2.5 - 3 buckets a day. When i say he takes all day, he eats probably half over a period of half an hour and then munches lightly for the rest of the day. Its always gone by 2pm & he gets fed at 6am. His teeth were done by a dentist who is meant to be the best in qld and was recommended to me by everyone. Teeth were done about 4wks ago. There was a major improvement in his performance after that so i am vry happy with his teeth. They have been bit-seated etc. He grazes all day as well on hay and grass.
Not too concerned if he gets hot on feed... more fun to ride! yehaa!

Hi there,

A friend of mine has had great success with a product called Weightgain, which is made by Omega feeds at Gunnedah. I use a product of theirs called No Grain which is basically sunflower hulls sprayed with molasses, and it has kept the weight on my horse.

I have found that oats, or a grain mix, is ideal for fattening horses, but you should exercise them when feeding this, for obvious reasons. A more expensive way to fatten your horse is the Mitavite range, especially breeda or economix, I have had great results with both of these. You could also try Equibix.

The bran mash idea is great, I feed epsom salts in my horses dinner every night, it is an old racehorse remedy for taking heat out of horses.

Good luck, Bowerbird.

Oh well, If you don't mind a bit of excitement.....Mitavite's Athlete's Plus would nearly certainly do the job (in more ways than one)would get the job done. Otherwise my plan with, plus handful of lupins (soaked for 12 hours) would nearly do the same anbd might be a biut cheaper. the household bucket as a measure is good idea. My horses in full feed (seldom full work!) get four a day - this is for hores not in work. I really hope I may have been some help. Good luck, hey, keep us posted as to developments. P

Ive heard about lupins. I think i might try those and some oil or that racehorse remedy. His coat has realy improved in the last couple of weeks. It has heaps of dapples and really rich in colour. Maybe the weight gain will follow? Thanks for all your help everyone! I really REALLY appreciate it.

After an ultrasound, it in fact showed that he in fact had stomach ulcers and now after being on ulcergaurd he has rapidly put on weight...just a thought, Leesh

Alot of throughbreds i get off the race track come in thin and ribby, straight away i put them on this diet - doesnt take long to fatten them up.

1 scoop = ice cream container
To be fed twice a day. you could also split this into 3 feeds a day.

4 scoops oaten chaff
1 scoop lucerne chaff
1 scoop mitavite breeda
half a scoop Lympia pellets
1 cup of sunflour seeds
1 tea spoon of Dolomite (only once a day)

And with as much hay as they can eat
add more of less pellets according to his weight, after about 3 weeks my horses are looking like show hacks with really shiny coats, and this is also a cool feed so will not hype them up.

Good luck with your boy!

Some good suggestions regarding feed. I've also used Stockgain, a liquid like molasses you can pour over feed or hay. Horse doesn't wind suck does he? which makes it hard to keep condition on.

All the horses I have ever owned have come off the track. ONe of my latest one, was sooo skinny I almost cried. He is now 3 times the weight in 6 weeks. Shiny, jet black ( was dun yellow colour dead hair!). Another I have just got, sounds a bit like your fellow. Doesnt just eat and eat, he picks then wanders off for grass, then comes back to feed. Sometimes its all gone, sometimes its not. But, I have noticed a big improvement, and he is actually eating a lot better. Some suggestions:
* check it isnt an ulcer. This can make eating very uncomfortable for a horse, and they wont keep still while eating.

This is what I have been feeding for a great result so far:

Scoop = large plastic feed scoops from feed stores.

4 scoops Wheaten/Oaten Chaff
2 scoops Lucerne ( although this was swapped over for last horse, as he prefered lucerne )
2 big scoops of Horse Supplement Pellets ( i have found these to be really good )
1 scoop of Steam Rolled Barley. I did boil my own for awhile there ( got lazy though ). but best way to do it is in a slow cooker if you have one. Put it on in morning, and done for night. Another substitute for this is boiled rice. That is great too, buy it bulk, and it is very cheap ( cont by parboiled stuff from feed stores, get from wholesale normal shops ).
I feed Stressalyte electrolyte replacement and Groom vitamens. I then coat feed in Molasses. Again, expensive way to do it, but it really does help them to get an appetite.

This is fed twice a day, with unlimited access to hay, and green feed. Weigh Powder ( 80% ) is also a great weight builder!
Hope any of this helps ! Good Luck.

** The best seat in the house, is that on a horse **

Many or most of all of the above are relevent : age of horse : previous activity : use rice pollard : make sure he's drenched : had teeth done : try Protexin ( I've found it very helpful to restore gut bacteria) etc.
Maybe the horse has been really stressed in the past and hasn't been able to "get over it" - read the other day that horses can get something like ulcers - sounds rather like a gimmik thing but maybe there is something in that idea - go to your vet and get some Ulcerguard - a bit pricey but have heard it works a treat - horses "look" different after a week - 20 ml 2 or 3 times a day depending on your work routine.

Just reading re your skinny horse. I have a 28 yo standardbred which are meant to hold weight well, but mine was very ribby. A friend suggested Mega Horse which is a mix of vitamins and minerals. Only 1/2 a cup a day in feed and we have achieved amazing results. He is now not fed this regulary and is maintaining his weight. Sold by a company called Pony Blue in Eden Park near Whittlesea Victoria, but is shipped all over the country. Hope this helps.

Simone - owner of Zari (young beautiful anglo arabian mare)

Yes pumpkin cooked is great for horses for weight gain and I remember when I was about 16 I found a product that looked like pollard or bran but it was called brewery grain and I think it came from the brewing of beer. Anyway I feed it to my skinny thoroughbred and she put the weight on nicely with about half bucket at night with a bucket of chaff and pad of thick lucerne for brekky. I asked up here in Townsville and no one seemed to know it but then one guy knew what it was and said they used to bury it on stations and when the drought hit they would dig it up and feed it to their cattle. (not sure how it was burried). It might be worth finding out if you can still buy it also has anyone else heard of it or used it. Bare in mind I used it 13 years ago

   Paris,

Try feeding your horse some Sweetbulk. its a oaten / lucerne / barley mix with molasses. great for putting on bulk. feed it with the breeda and try some whey powder as well. Soybean is pretty good to but bit $$$.

   Hi Paris,

Most of the previous suggestions are very good. Basically you are looking for a feed with a high energy output. My recommendation is steam rolled barley (high in energy but low in protein)and copra (high in energy & protein) to be added to his diet. Copra is coconut meal and can be fed wet or dry. Some horses will not eat it but it's cheap enough to give a try and it will give him a wonderful coat.

Some other suggestions (will be repeating some other ideas here and thanks to John Konke for measurements). Some I have used, other methods have been recommended over the years :

Polyunsaturated oil (corn, soyabean, blending cooking oil etc.) can feed up to 4 cups a day. Do not feed used cooking oil. Oil is a very high energy source. If you are going to feed over a cup then you need to supplement with additional vitamin E (100iu vitamin E per 100ml of fat above standard recommended dose). If fats are provide more than a quarter of the energy in a diet, protein needs to be supplemented at a ratio of 1:4 (ie 1 cup protein meal per 1 cup oil).

Milk powder is high in energy and is a good source of protein, high in B group vitamins. Howevwer it doesn't provide much available energy to older horses (ie been weaned) and is an expensive way to feed.

Lupin are now available in an extruded form and are easy to feed. They are also a high source of energy and protein.

Peas (might be harder to find) are again a good source of protein and energy and mix well with soyabean meal. whole peas must be soaked before feeding

Corn/oats, corn has the higher energy of the two. Both provide low protein. Oats is a "traditional" feed because it is almost always palatable to horse and less likely to cause digestive upsets. Corn is considered a "heating" feed. TBs are believed to have a delayed insulin response following feeds containing grain or carbohydrates and this can cause them become "fizzy" within 3-4 hours.

if you are showing, be careful chamomile is swabable!
apparently, tho, if you steep it like a tea and then drain, whatever the ingredient that is swabable evaporates in the steaming but even so, be careful!
it can help, its true but sadly, can cause you probs!

   Hi,

I have a horse for the first time, in north-west Spain which can be ideal grazing country being warm and wet but can also suddenly dry up like the rest of Spain. When the grass dried up in June and my mare started to lose weight, I took a selection of things I could easily get from the correspondence here.

Now I give her (she is about 16 hh):
2 scoops of the locally popular high energy mix (pienso);
200 g smashed up rice (sold cheaply for dogs in local supermarket), soaked in 1.5 times its volume of water overnight;
1 handful of sunflower seeds;
1 tablespoon epsom salts;
1 tablespoon seaweed meal (originally bought as plant food);
a few slices of bread (dried in the sun makes it less stodgy);
a selection of (uncooked) veg and fruit as available: carrots, lettuce, potato, apples, corncobs, cucumber, banana, plums, tomatoes (I have tried new ones individually and it is amazing what she likes)

I give this for breakfast and dinner with unlimited hay and/or grazing; although for breakfast I normally leave out the epsom salts and seaweed for convenience.

Two things I tried but wasn't so happy with were:
sunflower oil, because even a small quantity made everything gloopy;
whole milk powder:

I wonder if horses can be lactose-intolerant. In case she was, I kept an eye on her manure, and did in fact find runnier than normal poos with the milk powder, so I have stopped that.

She has been on this diet for 2 weeks now and has gained weight in a good balanced way, i.e. not just round her tummy, and also more shine in her coat. She does get a fair amount of exercise even when not being ridden, as I take her to many different grazing sites.

So thanks for posting the message, and everyone's comments.

I had a horse that was being fed 2 scoops of calm performance pellets and 4 scoops of lucerne chaff in a 25acre paddock and was hardly maintaining weight. He got injured and was on stable restrictions, but I kept the same feed to him and he blossomed.

So now if I have a horse that I want to put weight on I put him in the stable for a week (with daily outings ofcourse) with hay and feed morning and night and hay at lunch and I've never had any bad side effects but definate weight gain.

The theory is pretty simple- limit energy output. I don't recommend high energy foods (which is good- less expense) and use calm performance pellets (easily digested and absorbed) and chaff.

You can worry yourself sick and spend an hour mixing feeds, but horses digestive systems are very simple - they graze on grass!-so keep it simple, limit their energy output (still take them out-dont' make them stand there all day) and it could be your answer.

hey, im a uni student n i have just done an animal feeding and nutrition course n am studying Equine and one of the things they hav stressed is EVERY horse is an induvidual so for all this advice remember to adapt it to suit ur horse, unfortunately just because it works for someone else doesnt mean it will work for urs... another thing someone mentioned copra (the coconut meal) and said it could be fed wet or dry... when feeding it dry remember that it can hold up to 5 times its weight in water and if fed dry it will suck the water out of ur horse and if fed in large amounts can cause dehydration and then if the horse goes and has a big drink it all expands even more within the stomach n since its such a tiny little stomch to start with u start getting colic issues etc... hope this doesnt sound like im trying to tell anyone what to do!! if i were u id try the ##### im about to start my 3yo warmblood filly on it n im hoping in a big way that she doesnt get too hot on it!! cheers everyone..

When I got my horse, he was lean. There are 2 different types of feeding that I have tried that worked a treat for my t/bred.

1.

1 scoop of coppra.
1 scoop of rice pollard.
1 scoop steamed flaked barley.
A good double hand full of chaff.
Moistened with water.

2.

1 scoop of Mill Run.
2 scoops of chaff.
Moistened with water.

Both I put a handfull of sunflower seeds, 1tbs calcium powder, 1tbs epsom salts, 1tbs seaweed meal and mollassas. I feed him twice daily along with hay or lucerne 4 times a day.

Good Luck!

There's nothing worse then having a skinny horse. A friend of ours horse, who gets feed reguraly, dropped dramatic amounts of weight and before she knew it, she had the RSPCA on her door step threatening to impound her horse. However, she was feeding her horse but due to lack of grass she was fighting a lossing battle. So the RSPCA gave her this special diet that is there guidelines to putting weight on horses quickly but safely at the same time. The diet consists of lupins, equibix, steamed flaked barley, chaff and plenty of hay. Already there has been a great improvement in the horses weight and this is only after being on the diet for 3 weeks! All you need to do is qive the horse a large scoop of this mixture morning and night and you will notice the improvement.

Hi Paris, Lots of suggestions for you to ponder. Best to keep it simple, - EQUIBIX, along with your good quality hay and grass (if possible). Make sure you WEIGH out the required amount (as per the label), so you know you're not under feeding. It's very important and often under-estimated. It will make sure your horse is getting the right amount of nutrients. Suggestions such as Barley/lupins & pollard/bran are good but grains are typically low in Calcium and pollard/bran is high in Phosphorus = imbalanced minerals which can cause a large number of problems. Equibix has also been 'extruded' which means it will largely be digested in the stomach, rather than passing through undigested into the large intestine where it cause digetive upsets (as is sometimes the case with grains). Make sure you introduce any feed change slowly over a couple of weeks. One other thing that everyone should have is a HORSE BLOCK out in the paddock. Horses know when they lacking something, and will lick the block accordingly (& sometimes too when they're bored!). Hope this helps - best of luck!

Does anyone know the difference between micronised barley and steam extruded barley?

I have also been told by numerous people that barley is great for fattening a skinny horse. But i do not have the time to boil my own each day.

If someone can let me know if they have tried either the hygain micronised barley or mitavite steam extruded barley it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've been told by my feed supply bloke (supplies a huge number of trainers) that micronised feed isn't worth the extra cost. He says a number of trainers have tried it and not noticed much difference.

Barley is great for fattening, just buy the steamed and rolled version and feed it out. Oats are also cheap, easy and safe and are actually Ok for most horses, you can usually feed a couple of kilos at least a day.

My 17.3h , 650kg mare eats 4 kg oats & 2 kg pellets, plus chaff & lucerne, per day & is fine.

Rice Bran is a good fattener and will also make your horse's coat shiny!

But your horse really needs more roughage. Does he have access to grazing? If not, you might need to provide hay along with his feeds, but definitely at least incluide chaff with his feeds. Concentrates alone go through a horse's system too quick to be of any good.

You should havea ration of AT LEAST 1:1, so that is at least one kilo of roughage for every kilo of concentrates.

If your horse continues to be thin, I really recommend a complete vet examination. My horse started losing weight and I tried everything to fatten him up, but he got severe colic one day and died. It turns out that he might have had a stomache tumor, and thats why he wasn't putting weight on. I don't want anyone to go through what I have been through.

Have you every had a blood test on this horse? If not I would recomend you do this to see if all the internal organs are working properly. It will not matter what you feed the horse, if he has a underlying problem. Them you should get in contact with some the equine feed company such as Kentuckey Equine Rescearch and speek to a nutritionalist because this is there business.

my horse was thifty when he was younger, ribby, dull coat. advice i was alway given feed him more mill mix(pollard/bran) and and pellets, the more i fed him the worse he looked.
i put him out on pasture for monthes and he came back looking great. i put him back on the feed he was receiving before and with in a short time he was looking awful again.
so i chnged his diet completly to just chaffs simple grains vits and lots of hay, weight is on coat shiny so we just figure he is wheaton intorantant, as soon as pellets are added to meals his poos are runny and smelly.
before i bought him as a yearling he main diet was 3 loaves of bread twice a day and we just think that was the start of all his problems he is now 11 and a very successful show horse at halter and saddle. It took me years to work out why my horse looked yuck. and i tried all the popular complete feed diets to no avail. he looks great now so simple suits him.

My horse is going through a weight issue too.. I recommend ##### Senior or ##### Calm.. This stuff is fantastic as it works within a week. It really pumps the horses muscles up too. The other feeds I can recommend are Copra, 'Weet-Bix Mix' and Equijewel.. Good stuff!

   Hi Paris,
Do u have a Vet that specialises in Horses in ur area?
If u give them a call they should be able to help.
With some horse feeds it can be dangerous to ur horse if u dont cook the feed right or if u give them a certain feed without balancing it with another.
Personaly i swear by Mitavite products i use breeda for my mare in foal and gumnuts for my older mare ive found it works better then the other feeds i tried ova the yrs an u dont have to feed them as much.
Goodluck,
Chazz

Yeah ive never commented on here b4 lol.
i'm not a fan of pre-packaged feeds like pellets and grain mixes (bad experiences - and ur totally clueless as to wats in it). I have a 16.1hh chetnut tb gelding 14yo and he's on oats, barley, lucern chaff, wheaten chaff, and equlibrium, and is in perfect show condition.
i'm aware that every horse reacts different to each feed, and i'd like to just say that the more food does NOT mean he will gain weight, it is more bad for your horse if anything. You must take into consideration the amount of grass and hay he is consuming a day, and work around that, as the more hard feed you provide him with, the less bulk he will consume, and which he needs.
i would recommend equilibrium, my horse has always done very well on his feed and equilibirium has allowed me to reduce his feed intake as it conditioner. i'd suggest taking him off rice pollard or coprice, as feeding this is long terms puts fat into the bloodstream, which leads to alot of nasty disorders including blocked arteries!
i'd recommend steamed barley flakes with equilibrium, chaff and some other various supplements including oil, pumpkin. Copra is a good feed if fed properly, feeding the right amount, putting it in a bucket and adding water BEFORE hand and allowing it to expand is the way to feed, rather than adding it dry as it will swell in the horses stomach, but if expanded b4hand it is a great weight lifter.
well hope my words of wisdom help lol.
em xx

   hey guys,
i have a 16.2 black warmblood mare that is having alot of trouble putting on weight and i use to feed her weight lifter calm buti went to john khonkes place the other day (khonkes own rugs and feeds)and he said that weight lifter is just glugging up the horses system adn you know how they have a "SECRET INGREDIENT" well that is only mashed up bread and they are making millions out of it. i have used it for about four months now and it was really good at the start and i even sent in a picture to them of her and she went in horse deals and a testimonial(she is in horse deals and is under the name W.E.S Monterray) adn she looked quite nice. still not fat enough but was working. then it just started to ware off and she has gone down hill since then. i feed her linseed and white french millet boiled for a couple of hours. what you do is you get 2 parts white french miller and 1 part linseed and cover it with water in a big crock pot or soemthing liek that. you double the amount of water and bring it to the boil hten let it sommer unil it becomes a gooey mixture. it smells grosse but the horses love it and brings a great shine to there coat. feed about 1-2 cups per day. john also has a great product called muscle xl and it wokrs within 2 weeks. he showed me some poictures of a horse his wife got and then after 2 weeks he showed me her and she looks fantastic. it is notmallly about 30-40 dollars and is onyl a supplement to there normal feed. hope this helps!
Steph

I am sorry to hear about your puzzling horse. I think you have had some great advice about the diet. I wanted to add a couple of things outside of diet changes which may help.

Check out if there is any low grade discomfort anywhere. I have had several horses mysteriously drop weight very quickly and in each case I have done everything else, teeth, worming, diet, more hay, less work, before realising what was the matter. Athiritis, back pain, badly fitting saddle are some ideas for you.

Another thought - check your water supply. If the water supply is insufficient or contaminated so that the horse does not drink enough this will have a big impact on the horse's condition. Some horses are really particular about the water. Be over-scrupulous about the water and make sure there is plenty of it especially in hot weather or hard exercise. It is incredible how much they drink. Beware automatic drinkers - I read somewhere the little ones should only be used for dogs. A horse needs a huge one.

Good luck - I hope you fix your horse soon. One of the thrills of riding is to see your horse become more beautiful each day and it is heartbreaking when they look poor.

Hi everyone this is Steph again, I just want to clarify what I wrote earlier
in the thread.

I am still to this day feeding Weight Lifter and I am very happy with it,
the comments I made about speaking to John Kohnke were actually incorrect,
John has since been in touch with the people from Weight Lifter to say that
he never made these comments to me, and that he in fact recommends Weight
Lifter to his clients when doing specialized diets for horses.

The comments that I made were actually said to me by another person at a
show that I was at who asked me what I was feeding my horse, I have never
spoken to John Kohonke directly and I now know that John did not make these
comments.

I would like to apologise to the people at Weight Lifter and John Kohnke for
any harm I might have caused them, I have actually used Weight Lifter now
for a long time, and have been very happy with how my horse looks and just
how calm she is on their feed. I can also confirm their feed is made from
the very best ingredients, my initial comments were an error of judgment on
my behalf.

Paris - I forgot to say I have had a lot of success with Equilibrium mineral supplement - the one in the yellow bag. Horses that were on very expensive diets with buckets and buckets of hardfood before they came to me now look great on grass hay and equilibrium. If they are in work they have half a scoop of pellets and half a scoop of steam flaked barley in addition. A few horses last year were looking really dull and they looked gorgeous after a week on equilibrium.

   Hi there

I was just reading all this ( it may be a bit old by now ) everyone is recommending different feeds but I was wondering if you have had his back checked out? I've been having similar problems with an ex racehorse, since getting some work on his muscles I'm noticing a difference. Even in the length of time he takes to eat he used to take ages to eat a feed but now he seems to eat a bit quicker, he's not bolting his food, but eating a bit faster.

Look, just because your horse is ribby doesn't mean he is anorexic. Trust me. My horse was considered anorexic at the start of the year due to poor feeding from the other agistment and he stress foundered and all this other stuff but we just had him on white chaff and canola oil (god send) Really helps.

Good luck.

10 months later, he is nice and plump and still on canola cause i took him off and he's a bit ribby, but only put him on canola if he is in work otherwise he could protein founder.

just a thought. it took many vets to find out that my ex race horse had a protein intollerance. The more food i feed him the skinny he got. low protein feeds and a large round bale of really grassy hay the drier the better. good luck
