"Urinating too much and runny poo"

What a lovely topic hey? LOL. But if I cant ask you blokes, who can I ask?

Since I got spirit I have thought a few times that he might be peeing too much, but didnt give too much thought to it, until recently. We were on a trail ride, it was only 45 min to an hour long and he urinated 4-5 times. He always seems to pee at least once sometimes twice on a ride. Most of the time his pee is as clear as water at least and not smelly, but he has had a few smelly ones that seem to be hard work for him. Any thoughts on this?

He also seems to have runny poo a lot. I even cut out his feed for a day or two to see what would happen and it was still runny. Yes, he is on green pasture, but he has been on the same pasture for months.

Thanks in advance.
Julie

How much water does he drink in comparison to how much he urinates?

Do you feed him his feed wet or dry?

Is he on a mineral supplement? If so what is it?

I got one horse who when he arrived urinated a lot more than my others ... spoke with my vets and they said to monitor his water intake, I also took him to the vet for examination and they took a urine sample and had it tested (also did a blood test) ... there were further tests available but the results of the original tests came back with no issues, and although he drank a lot - it was only at the high end of the expected daily intake of water.

Do speak to your vets ... there can be many things wrong with them that frequent urination can be a symptom of.

Yes monitor his water intake,i knew a horse that did the same and drank a whole bath in one day due to bordem, now i think he pee's alot because of habit.

Also he may be scouring. my friend WB has it really bad, allergic to sugar, cannot eat green grass or lucern and only eats wheaton hay and his hard feed. This has worked the best. She has tried EVERYTHING under the sun, from pastes,to drenching, all with no luck untill she took him off all grass and green feed, works a treat. I guess it's like Irratible Bowel syndrome in horses.Liek humans, horses too can become allergic to feeds over time. I hope this helps. All the best.

I know it sounds awful writing this, but you asked! Could he have a "bean" in his willy? This can also make horses urinate frequently and just need to be picked/cleaned out. Hope you find an answer soon!

I would watch the water intake to.

He may have a slight kidney problem so make sure he has some roughage as well to munch on that isnt to green (i.e. good qaul meadow hay)

Get the vet to take a look as well to rule out any serious problems.

Make sure he is totally clean and free of infection (should be easy as he pees alot)

For the runny poo try brewers yeast in his feed.

Drinking and peeing too much are also a sign of diabetes. It affects the whole system too so they end up with inconsistent stools. Another sign is excessive hunger and eventually dropping weight despite plenty of feed. You can get the dip sticks that test for glucose in their wee (just get human ones from chemist) and test his urine. If he has glucose in his urine it would point towards diabetes.
