19/01/02 Karla Unlocks Oaks Plans
0119karlakeys.jpg (8779 bytes)Karla Keys who produced a powerful finish to win today's $40,000 Copperama Super VOBIS Handicap (1400m) at Sandown will be aimed toward the Moonee Valley Oaks in March.

Settling back in the field the Cranbourne trained filly, who was first up since running on the placegetter heels in the VRC Oaks, was too strong over the concluding stages for the well fancied favourite Gradual.

Karla Keys ($4-$5-$4.60), a filly by Soviet Lad, has placed twice in stakes class in Adelaide last preparation before her final run netted an excellent fifth in Magical Miss' Oaks at Flemington.

0119daleshort.jpg (8358 bytes)Winning trainer Shaun Quigly wasn't at Sandown today, rather at Horsham saddling up three stablemates on the provincial circuit.

Successful jockey Dale Short predicted a bright future for the filly.

"She's on the way up and would head to a race like the Oaks," Short said referring to the rich Moonee Valley Oaks.

Short also praised the training efforts of Quigley who was able to get the filly to score a gritty first up win, after her Oaks preparation late last year.

"Shaun's done a great job with her. He should take all of the credit it's been a credit coming back well from the Oaks," the 42 year-old veteran of the saddle said.

Copperama (Comeran-Old Penny) a member of the then Tommy Smith stable won the 1981 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
