30/07/02 Hall of Fame Trainer Inductee: Etienne de Mestre

The man who trained Archer to win the first two Melbourne Cups was tonight inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in Melbourne.

One could best describe Etienne De Mestre as the "Bart Cummings" of his day.

De Mestre trained Archer to win the first two runnings of the Melbourne Cup and later trained a further three winners of Australia's greatest (Tim Whiffler, Chester and Calamia) race to create a record which lasted for 99 years until broken by Bart himself in 1977.

De Mestre also trained many other feature race winners including two AJC and two VRC Derbies and an Epsom Handicap.

He died in 1916, aged 84.
