| The first
southern hemisphere-bred foal of champion racehorse Montjeu was born at Bloomsbury
Studs New Zealand farm in Matamata this morning. The rich bay filly is from the Gone West mare, No Reserve, who is owned by Mr
Phillip Freedman of the United Kingdom.
Mr Freedman is the owner of Cliveden Stud in England and is
the upcoming president of the English Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Cliveden
Stud is renowned as the breeder of English Derby winner Reference Point among many other
successful racehorses.
Bloomsbury Stud (NZ) manager Ric Wylie is not surprised by
the quality of the filly given the extremely good reports he has received from Europe on
Montjeus first crop of northern hemisphere-bred foals.
"My source in Europe told me that the Montjeu foals
born there were as good a line of foals that they had seen from any of the Coolmore Stud
stallions this year," Wylie said.
"And the filly born at Bloomsbury today is an absolute
quality foal. She has lived up to all of the reports Ive had from overseas on
Montjeus foals, Wylie said.
Montjeu, a six-time Group One winner, is the highest rated
son of champion sire Sadlers Wells. He stood his first southern hemisphere season at
Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge last year, covering around 120 mares.
He will be returning to Nelson and Sue Schicks farm
this year and will be among the Windsor Park Stud stallions scheduled to be paraded at the
stud later in the month. |
