10/01/02 Yarra Glen Holds Successful Cup Meeting
A crowd of 3808 people showed their support for the Yarra Glen Racing Club at its Cup meeting yesterday.

The 2002 Eat Well Live Well Yarra Glen Cup Day held Wednesday 9 January attracted a crowd of 3808 people, an increase of 28% on the previous year. A similarly positive result was achieved in betting turnover with on-course turnover recording a 14.5% increase.

Gary Gray, executive chairman, Yarra Glen Racing Club said "There is no doubt that yesterday's meeting was a great way to start the year for the Yarra Glen Racing Club and provide the Club with a positive platform for promoting similarly successful events in the future."

"Everyone had a great day," he said.

Apprentice jockey Reece Wheeler rode Storm Edition, trained by Barry Barnes to victory in the $51,500 Cup.

In addition to top class racing on the day, an Elvis impersonator entertained the crowds and had people up and dancing. Visitors that were looking for a more subdued time enjoyed the tunes of the Jazz band.

The 'Fashions on the Field' competition proved to be popular and kids were entertained throughout the day with lots of fun rides and activities.

The Yarra Glen Racing Club is scheduled to race again on Friday 25th January with the next feature meeting, which promises to offer all the excitement of yesterday, set for the Grand Prix weekend, Sunday 3 March.
