04/02/02 Adelaide Sale: Half Brother to Spartacus Up for Grabs
If you are looking for a speed family at this month’s Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale then stop! I’ve saved you all that hard work. Just open up your catalogue and flick a handful of pages and open up to lot 15.

The bay colt is by Keltrice. A Group One winner of the Lightning Stakes at Flemington, Keltrice himself was sold in Adelaide. Now the son of Kenmare is known for throwing speedy young gallopers – gallopers to the calibre of Northeast Shiela, Deprave, Skymaker, Dashing Grenada, Lezayre and Kel Power.

A quick glance to the other side of the family tree and you will find his dam Pazzihi. Even when not looking at her produce record (we will get to that soon) she has speed wherever you look. She is a daughter of Manihi, who’s best performer was the champion sprinter Manikato, and she is a half sister to Group winning and Oakleigh Plate placed Dapper’s Hope. Pazzihi’s dam Pastel won twelve, including three races at two.

The mighty Matrice bobs up freely in the colts family. One of the best South Australia has produced, Matrice is the sire of Manihi, while Keltrice’s grandam is the brilliant Toltrice, Matrice’s best female race performer who later retired and became Australia’s answer to Eight Carat!

So after two wins up to 1100 metres on the track Pazzihi was retired to a new life as a broodmare. And hasn’t she become a star!

Her Snippets colt would be named Spartacus and he would prove to be a sensation. His best wins came in the Group One treble of the Australia Stakes, Manikato Stakes and Oakleigh Plate. Let’s not forget he also won a Moir, Rubiton and CS Hayes Stakes – all of which were Group races as well.

A string of dates with the underrated Cerreto produced five top class gallopers. Mavournae was a winner of the Rubiton Stakes while Manitaeha was stakes placed at Caulfield. Stately Bay won ten races while his full relations Maniziah (9 wins) and Pepperell Drive (2 wins) were also better than average.

Mavournae and Manitaeha have since retired to stud and both have produced stakes performers by Keltrice. Thus this colt is already a three quarter brother to two stakes performers and half brother to two others including one of Australia’s best sprinters in recent years.

Offered by Collingrove Stud acting as agent for The Pines Stud, all of the good judges are expected to be in the auditorium when this fellow faces the auctioneer early in the sale.
