Bendigo (VIC) - Thursday 24 January 2002

Rail: True

Riding Changes: Nil

Race 1 - Eaglehawk "C" Store Maiden Plate - 1100m -

Shortly after leaving the mounting yard Greek Adonis dislodged Nash Rawiller, its rider, and cantered around the track for some distance prior to being caught. Greek Adonis was then examined by the Club Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was fit to start. As a result of this the start of the race was delayed for a considerable time. Clever Jeel had to be replated at the start.

Race 2 - Country Vet Maiden Plate - 1300m -

Juggerly jumped away awkwardly.

Passing the 600 metres and rounding the home turn Star Of Sublime hung out.

Approaching the 200 metres Grey Valley, which was weakening, had to be eased to avoid the heels of Juggerly, which shifted in away from Danzadane, when that gelding shifted in slightly.

Race 3 - Midstate Credit Management Services F & M Class 1 Handicap - 1100m -

Shortly after the start Christine's Angel was hampered by Miss Moxie, which shifted out.

D. Taggart, rider of Canchita was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that near the 100 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Feisty Lass, which resulted in that filly having to be checked to avoid the heels of Canchita. D. Taggart was suspended from race riding for a period to commence midnight 24th January, 2002 and to expire midnight 8th February, 2002.

Race 4 - Worksafe Victoria Maiden Plate - 1600m -

No report.

Race 5 - Carlsruhe Roadhouse Class 6 Handicap - 1400m -

In the straight Prince Quay (NZ) was held up for a run until near the 150 metres.

Race 6 - Fliedners Racing Stables Class 2 Handicap - 1600m -

Prior to correct weight being declared R. Wheeler rider of Cigar Ring viewed the patrol video with a view to lodging an objection in the straight.

Subsequent to the event Eleganz (NZ) was inspected by the Club Veterinary Surgeon and found to be lame in the off hind leg.

Passing the 1000 metres Mrs. Marshay (NZ) was eased off the heels of Raging Rhino (NZ).

Race 7 - Shell Heathcote Northend Roadhouse Class 3 Handicap - 1300m -

Prior to correct weight Craig Robertson rider of Heiroraami, 2nd placegetter, viewed the photo finish print on the monitor before agreeing with the official placings.

During the race Persistence Pays lost its four race plates.

Over the concluding stages Sparring Partner was eased off the heels of Top Perch, which shifted out under pressure.

Race 8 - J M Leech Jewellers Class 3 Handicap - 1100m -

Prior to correct weight John Keating rider of Royal Calcutta, 2nd placegetter, lodged an objection against Station Ruler (R. Cartwright) being declared 1st placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference in the straight. After hearing evidence from all parties concerned and viewing the patrol videos, stewards dismissed the objection. It was established that passing the 200 metres Royal Calcutta, which had obtained a narrow run between Liberty Lad and Station Ruler was then tightened for room due to both those horses shifting ground. As a result of this Station Ruler which had become unbalanced then shifted in further and brushed Royal Calcutta.R. Cartright was notified to straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.

Also prior to correct weight being declared Vincent Caddy rider of Berry Nice approached the Stewards stating his mount was denied a fair start. After questioning Mr. S. Wall and Mr. N. Hearps Club Starters, and Mr. B. Hearps, barrier attendant, Mr. Brian Cox trainer and Vincent Caddy and after viewing the patrol video Stewards deemed that Berry Nice had been denied a fair start. It was established that just prior to the gates opening Berry Nice had stepped backwards causing its rear starting gates to be sprung open, which then resulted in Berry Nice missing the jump and then being slow to begin. Subsequent to the race Stewards ordered that all monies wagered on Berry Nice be refunded and ordered the following alteration to betting - All successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of Berry Nice are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket - Win Bets - 20 cents, Place Bets - 16 cents, Winning Concession Bets - 20 cents, Doubles Bets - 20 cents. All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket.
