 RACE 1  BALAKLAVA BOOKMAKERS /
        SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (Division 1) L. Smith replaced C. Lever as the
        rider of SUN HALO owing to C. Lever being indisposed through illness. BISHA MON (B. Claridge) jumped away
        awkwardly; in turn that gelding shifted in making contact with EL ZANA (C. Lindop),
        resulting in that mare becoming unbalanced and losing ground. In the vicinity of the 800 metres
        CALIFORNIA ROSE (J. Bowditch) shifted in onto SIMONDE (D. Tootell) who in turn was taken
        in onto BISHA MON (B. Claridge) resulting in that gelding being inconvenienced. Racing inside the 600 metres LOOK
        N LEARN (M. Hoppo), which commenced to race fiercely and show a tendency to
        lay out, shifted out resulting in HILLS OF FIRE (D. Azis) being taken out onto SUN HALO
        (L. Smith).  S. Price reported to Stewards that HOUSE
        GUEST showed a tendency to lay out throughout the event and racing in the vicinity of the
        300 metres, that gelding shifted out slightly; at the same time SIMONDE (D. Tootell)
        shifted in, resulting in those two horses bumping together. RACE 2  ST. HALLET / SABIS MAIDEN
        PLATE (Division 2) RAMEN (M. Hoppo) jumped away
        awkwardly resulting in that gelding shifting out and making contact with MARCLASE (M.
        Neilson).  Shortly after SIMMS COVE (Darren Holland)
        shifted out onto ESPRIT DE FURY (D. Carney) resulting in that mare being taken out onto
        RAMEN (M. Hoppo). In turn that gelding was tightened for galloping room. FONNIX (W. Hokai) showed a tendency to lay
        in placing its rider at a disadvantage in riding the filly out to the line. SIMMS COVE (Darren Holland) showed a
        tendency to lay out in the straight. A subsequent veterinary inspection of that gelding
        revealed muscle soreness in the near side shoulder. A veterinary inspection of FONNIX following
        the running of the race revealed that the filly had suffered a laceration to the gum. RACE 3  COOPERS CLASS 5 HANDICAP JACKS suffered a bi-lateral
        bleeding attack during the running of the race. As this was the second occasion that the
        gelding had bled, Mr. S. Coombs, trainer of JACKS, was advised that the gelding was now
        banned from racing for life under ARR 53A. RACE 4  EXCEL RENT A CAR /
        BLUEBIRD TRAIN DISTANCE CLASS 3 HANDICAP Racing to the 1500 metres HOSTLER
        (M. Hoppo) shifted in resulting in LUST FOR POWER (NZ) (S. Price) being taken in onto
        HES THE SAINT (J. Maund) resulting in that gelding having to be checked and losing
        its position.  M. Hoppo was subsequently charged with
        Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and after pleading guilty to the charge, was suspended
        from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday, 25th
        August and to expire at midnight on Wednesday, 5th September 2001; a period of
        two metropolitan meetings. M. Hoppo was advised that his previous good record and guilty
        plea had been taken into account when coming to a penalty. Mr. J.A. OConnor, trainer of HOSTLER,
        reported to Stewards that the gelding had returned to Scale with its tongue over the bit
        and as a result permission was granted to Mr. OConnor for a tongue tie to be used on
        the gelding in future races. RACE 5  BAKER YOUNG
        STOCKBROKERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP D. Carney replaced C. Lever as the
        rider of MANILOW. A swab sample was taken from OUTLAWS,
        winner of the race. PEKOE (C. Lindop) and RUSH OF ANGELS (M.
        Hoppo) were both slow to begin. Racing inside the 1000 metres CLASSIC WHITE
        (M. Neilson) shifted in onto MANILOW (D. Carney) who in turn was taken in onto KENTON
        KNIGHT (L. Smith) resulting in that gelding being tightened for galloping room, striking
        the running rail and being forced to lose its position.  M. Neilson was advised that a charge of
        Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) would be laid against him. At the request of M. Neilson,
        this inquiry was adjourned until one hour prior to the first race on Saturday, 25th
        August 2001 to allow his master, Mr. B. Dunn, to be present. Racing inside the 1000 metres the saddle on
        KENTON KNIGHT commenced to slip resulting in L. Smith, rider of the gelding, being
        dislodged from KENTON KNIGHT in the vicinity of the 100 metres. L. Smith suffered an
        injury to the right thumb and was ruled unfit to ride for the remainder of the day. In the vicinity of the 100 metres ASSUME
        THE CROWN (T. Creek) shifted in slightly under riding resulting in PEKOE (C. Lindop) being
        inconvenienced. A veterinary inspection of WESTMINSTER HALL
        following the running of the race revealed a puncture laceration to the off fore pastern. MANILOW suffered a laceration to the off
        hind fetlock during the running of the race. RACE 6  BARDRILL CLASS 2
        HANDICAP T. Creek replaced C. Lever as the
        rider of SIGN OF JEUNE and W. Hokai replaced L. Smith as the rider of TUCKLAN LAD. Shortly after the start SIGN OF JEUNE (T.
        Creek) shifted in onto STRIKING PLUME (S. Price) who in turn shifted in and away from SIGN
        OF JEUNE. In consequence SHUTAYR (C. Symons) was taken in onto NINA SOPHIA (D. Azis) who
        in turn was taken in onto ROSE OF CAITLIN (Darren Holland) resulting in that mare being
        tightened for galloping room and having to be eased. Stewards took no further action as
        they believed no one rider was responsible. In the vicinity of the 800 metres STRIKING
        PLUME (S. Price) commenced to race fiercely resulting in that horse shifting out and
        making contact with SHUTAYR (C. Symons) forcing that horse wider on the track. In the vicinity of the 500 metres NETTLES
        (W. Kerford) shifted out to improve its position; at the same time LAWFUL POKER (J.
        Bowditch) shifted in slightly resulting in those two horses bumping together. A veterinary inspection of RIMULA following
        the running of the race revealed that the mare was suffering a haematoma to the off fore
        cannon. RACE 7  PRICES BAKERY /
        MALAYSIA AIRLINES BALAKLAVA CUP Acting on confirmed advice that
        NEWSFLASH was showing early signs of a virus, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of that
        gelding at 9.05 am. A swab sample was taken from EASY LANDING,
        winner of the race. SECRET HAZE (S. Price) and SKYBEAU (NZ) (G.
        Dorol) were both slow to begin. In the vicinity of the 800 metres MUSTINAIR
        (B. Vale) shifted in slightly; at the same time RORALISM (P. Gatt) shifted out, resulting
        in CZAR HERO (NZ) (S. Arnold) being tightened for galloping room between those two horses. Racing inside the 100 metres IN PERIL (G.
        Hoobin) shifted in under riding resulting in RECKABAR (D. Missen) being inconvenienced. RACE 8  WOODSTOCK CLASS 3
        HANDICAP A veterinary inspection of
        SHINDAGHA MISS on its arrival on course found that the mare had suffered a head trauma in
        the float and as a result Stewards, acting on veterinary advice, withdrew SHINDAGHA MISS
        at 12.20 pm. J. Bowditch replaced L. Smith who had been
        engaged to replace C. Lever as the rider of GABRIELS FIRE. In the vicinity of the 1000 metres TO PAY
        UP (D. Tootell) commenced to race fiercely; at the same time BRIGHTNESS (B. Claridge)
        rolled in, resulting in TO PAY UP having to be eased. For some distance after this
        incident TO PAY UP showed a tendency to over-race. Racing between the 500 to in the vicinity
        of the 300 metres BUSTER DREAM (NZ) (S. Price) had difficulty in obtaining clear galloping
        room. In the vicinity of the 300 metres BUSTER
        DREAM (NZ) (S. Price) shifted out slightly resulting in contact being made between that
        horse and BRIGHTNESS (B. Claridge). In the vicinity of the 200 metres TO PAY UP
        (D. Tootell) was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of B. Claridge, rider of
        BRIGHTNESS. RACE 9  ARISTOCRAT / SABIS
        CLASS 1 HANDICAP Mrs. Y. Forrest, trainer of
        AMACLASE, was fined the sum of $50 for failing to declare a rider for that emergency at
        the required time. C. Lindop replaced L. Smith as the rider of
        AMACLASE and D. Carney replaced C. Lever as the rider of CZARINA. Correct Weight was delayed in being
        semaphored for this event to allow G. Dorol, rider of ATHESE GOLD (NZ), and B. Claridge,
        rider of OUR SUCCESS, to view the official head-on film in the straight. After doing so,
        in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared. On jumping away BISHOPS COURT (S.
        Price) shifted out; at the same time SLIPPERY GUY (J. Maund) shifted in, resulting in
        APPEALING BELL (S. Cahill), ANOTHER FARE (T. Creek) and CZARINA (D. Carney) all being
        tightened for galloping room. Racing to the 1100 metres OUR SUCCESS (B.
        Claridge) commenced to race fiercely taking charge of its rider for some distance. In
        consequence, in the vicinity of the 700 metres, OUR SUCCESS shifted in, despite the
        efforts of its rider, resulting in ANOTHER FARE (T. Creek) being severely hampered and
        being forced to check. In doing so that mare shifted out resulting in AMACLASE (C. Lindop)
        and ATHESE GOLD (NZ) (G. Dorol) being severely hampered. As a result SHOCKS (J. Bowditch),
        which had been racing behind ANOTHER FARE, was forced to severely check and lose its
        position. Stewards interviewed B. Claridge and Mr. R. Morelli, Stable Foreman for the
        trainer of OUR SUCCESS, Mr. K. Sweeney. As a consequence, OUR SUCCESS was stood down from
        racing for a period until such time as that colt can trial to the satisfaction of the
        Stewards in an official barrier trial. Racing inside the 100 metres CHALTOM (C.
        Buchiw) shifted in under riding; at the same time GHOST FLIGHT (Darren Holland) shifted
        out and as a result OUR SUCCESS (B. Claridge) was inconvenienced. |
