The distance of this race was shown as 2800 metres when, in
fact, the race was run over 2900 metres. When "Our Prince Naseem (NZ)" made a faulty jump
near the 700 metres, "Close Quarters" and "Dolphin Peak" were severely
hampered. Race 2 - YARRA VALLEY MAIDEN PLATE - 1500
metres: On jumping away "Overtrump" was hampered, and
"Regent (NZ)" had to be checked when tightened for room between
"Dantastic", which shifted out, and "South Road", which shifted in. When "Cee Cee Flyer" broke down near the 800
metres "Overtrump" clipped the heels of that gelding, which shifted out abruptly
and hampered "Milne Bay". "Regent (NZ)" hung out in the straight. Race 3 - N.M.I.T. CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1) - 1200
metres: "Green Bottle" and "Blade Runner"
jumped away awkwardly, and "Sampaquita" was a little slow to begin. "Umagirl" jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and
        inconvenienced "Straussman (NZ)", Race 4 - N.M.I.T. CLASS 1 HANDICAP (2) - 1200
metres: "Sirgarf" jumped away awkwardly. Near the 800 metres "Thief of Time", when being
checked off the heels of "Lady Bemyne (NZ)", shifted out and hampered
"Sirgarf". Shortly after straightening M. Alesci, rider of
"Spinnerman", dropped his whip. After passing the 200 metres "Rare Mica" was
hampered due to "Beachley" (Michelle Payne) shifting in when not sufficiently
clear. Miss Payne was severely reprimanded, and notified to exercise more care in future.
         Race 5 - CARLTON DRAUGHT CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1500
metres: Approaching the 200 metres "Rukuna Lover (NZ)"
had to be checked when tightened for room between "Forest Row", which shifted in
slightly, and "Somebody Smiled" (D. Yates), which shifted out under pressure. D.
Yates was severely reprimanded, and notified that he must ensure that he stops riding and
straightens his mount when in similar circumstances in future. Race 6 - CARLTON DRAUGHT OPEN HANDICAP - 2000
metres: Ryan Martin was shown as the rider of "Liston"
when, in fact, Ms Sally Wynne had been notified as the rider of that gelding prior to
declaration of riders' time. J. Winks, rider of "Magic Precieux", advised the
Stewards that his mount had weakened in the going today, and he believed it was unsuited
        by rain-affected conditions. Race 7 - MELBA LODGE CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 2000
metres: No report. Race 8 - YARRA GLEN GRAND HOTEL FILLIES AND MARES
CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1500 metres: V. Hall, rider of "Primary Vision" , advised the
Stewards that the filly, which had performed poorly, did not feel comfortable in its
action throughout the race. A veterinary examination subsequent to the event revealed that
"Primary Vision" was showing signs of being restricted in its action in front.
The stable representative of Mr. D. O'Brien, trainer of the filly, was notified that prior
to the filly racing again he must produce a satisfactory veterinary certificate in respect
of "Primary Vision". SWAB SAMPLES were taken from "The
Rampager", winner of the J. J. Houlahan Hurdle - Race 1; and from "Duke of
Wellington", winner of the N.M.I.T. Class 1 Handicap (2) - Race 4. Random swab samples were taken from "Pearcedale",
winner of the N.M.I.T. Class 1 Handicap (1), from "Our Needles (NZ)", winner of
the Carlton Draught Open Handicap - Race 6, and from "Just a Look (NZ)", winner
of the Melba Lodge Class 3 Handicap - Race 7. |
