Canterbury (NSW) - Wednesday 2 January 2002
Weather: Fine
Track: Good

RACE 1 - STC YOUNG MEMBERS CRUISE HANDICAP 1100M

Stardust Beauty reared over in the barriers dislodging its rider apprentice R Brewer.

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Stardust Beauty at 12.47pm. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Stardust Beauty be refunded in full and made no alteration to other betting. Trainer R O'Leary was advised that Stardust Beauty must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start.

Apprentice R Brewer was stood down from his remaining ride by the club's doctor.

Dezhilla, Adillo Adillo and Silly were slow to begin.

Near the 600M Woodie was tightened for room when it took a narrow run inside Silly which was inclined to lay in.

When Shouq shifted out at the entrance to the straight to improve Maintenant was taken out. Pixies, which was following, had to be steadied off the heels of that runner and in turn caused Dezhilla to be hampered.

Aquamonious hung out and proved difficult to ride over the concluding stages.

J Cassidy (Capricious Lady) stated that the filly raced very greenly and was inclined to hang out throughout the event.

When Capricious Lady made the first turn awkwardly, Shouq, which was following, got its head up and struck the heels of Capricious Lady.

A post race veterinary examination found Capricious Lady to have sustained a laceration to the near hind pastern and a swab sample was taken.

RACE 2 - SYDNEY NIGHT RACING HANDICAP 1580M

When questioned concerning the tactics adopted on Trephina today, G Boss stated that his instructions had been to take up a forward position, but after giving his mount a kick to jump away from the barriers Trephina grabbed the bit and he finished up being left in the lead, which had not been his intention.

Mr P Cadden, representing trainer G Waterhouse, confirmed the instructions and stated that at its most recent start the intention had been for Trephina to be racing more forward but due to circumstances those instructions were not able to be carried out.

J Cassidy, the rider of Kalalycia, stated that he was trapped three wide in a very slowly run race and he therefore elected mid race to go forward and cross to race outside the leader Trephina.

When questioned why he had then applied pressure from the 700M, J Cassidy stated that Kalalycia is a one-pacer and having allowed his mount to roll forward to obtain a position closer to the fence he did not believe it was in the best interests of the horse to then steady and allow the race to develop into a sprint home.

When questioned concerning his riding around the home turn J Innes (Pacific Joy) stated that his mount was inclined to lay in on to Airlie Bird and that shortly after pulling off that runner Airlie Bird was able to shift out as it was travelling superior to his mount. J Innes was notified that in similar circumstances he would be expected to be more competitive in his riding at such a vital stage of the race.

B Cooper was spoken to concerning weighing in slightly less than half a kilogram under her declared weight. After riding in this race apprentice M Howarth was stood down by the club's medical officer from his remaining engagement.

RACE 3 - GARDS RETRAVISION FURNITURE HANDICAP 1580M

As apprentice M Howarth was unable to claim to his riding weight, permission was granted for apprentice D Evans to be substituted as the rider of Nihilism. Apprentice Howarth was fined $150.

My Mandoria was slow to begin.

Approaching the first turn Onyx was steadied when tightened for room by Blow The Whistle which shifted in and away from Nihilism which shifted in slightly.

When questioned concerning Scale The Heights getting back in the field, J Sheehan stated that it had been the intention to race on the pace but Scale The Heights jumped away awkwardly and from his wide barrier he elected to cross behind the field rather than be trapped wide.

RACE 4 - WARREN MOORE 40TH BIRTHDAY SUPERFECTA 1100M

My Wife's Gems jumped away awkwardly.

On two occasions in the middle stages Palace Consort hung in and tightened Ebony Fair on to the rail.

Palace Consort was held up for a run in the early part of the straight.

Ebony Fair had to change direction abruptly approaching the 100M in order to continue on in clear running.

C Munce (Palace Consort) stated that he was under no specific instructions from trainer P Perry but when his mount did not show early speed from its wide barrier he elected to ride the horse from behind.

RACE 5 - DE BORTOLI WINES HANDICAP 1200M

Near the 1000M, when tightened for room between El Snip and Tucker, which shifted out away from Vaporeon, Omnitrader got its head up and ran out resulting in it having to be checked off the heels of El Snip and losing ground.

A post race veterinary examination of El Snip, which weakened badly over the concluding stages, revealed the horse to have suffered lacerations to both heel bulbs on the off forefoot. A swab sample was taken. Trainer D Smith indicated that El Snip would now be spelled.

Apprentice N Tomizawa (Thunder Time) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in abruptly passing the 1100M resulting in El Snip being taken in causing Getting On to be hampered.

Apprentice N Tomizawa's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday 10 January 2002 and to expire on Sunday 20 January 2002 on which day he may ride.

RACE 6 - PARRAMATTA LEAGUES HANDICAP 1100M

Lunar Express was slow to begin.

Approaching the first turn, when being steadied off the heels of Shockeroo, Wowamba ran in and bumped the hindquarters of Marfoo Star and lost ground.

Near the 400M Kenatius was briefly tightened for room between Shockeroo and Ages Ago which shifted out.

Fusser did not obtain clear running for some distance in the straight.

RACE 7 - CANTERBURY PARK EVENT CENTRE HANDICAP 1900M

Alassany was slow to begin.

Near the 50M Trafford, which was commencing to give ground, was checked when crowded for room between Travel The Sommet and Destruction, both of which shifted ground.

The club's veterinary surgeon reported that Arrogant Ladd had cast its near fore plate and had broken away a significant portion of the hoof.

RACE 8 - STC MEMBERSHIP SUPERFECTA 1250M

Stormy Mo was slow to begin. Bracing Rhythm jumped away awkwardly.

Passing the 700M Chile Dapper was briefly tightened when Cherubian was inclined to hang in.

Shortly after entering the straight Kootoomootoo rolled in and bumped Chile Dapper.

Close to the finishing line Bracing Rhythm had to steady off the heels of Waugh which shifted out.
