Canterbury (NSW) - Wednesday 5 September 2001
RACE 1 - STARGAMES HANDICAP 1,200M

Emily Spinach was a late withdrawal at the 12.52pm after that filly was unable to be loaded. Stewards ruled no alteration to betting. Trainer W Davey was advised that Emily Spinach must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start. Typify was slow to begin. Violetter jumped awkwardly and got its head up. Making the first turn Typify was tightened for room inside Strategic Miss which was inclined to lay in on that turn. Approaching the 500M More Than A Woman ducked in despite the efforts of its rider resulting in Queen's Suite, Strategic Miss and Typify all being checked. Passing the 200M Cryptique was steadied when disappointed for a run between Pilgrim and Salty Sal which shifted out away from Breezer.

RACE 2 - CMP/KPMG HANDICAP 1,200M

Brantwood Manor was slow to begin. Bugle Boy jumped inwards at the start hampering Caipirinha and Mask Of Time. Caipirinha, which was inclined to lay in, shifted out when being steadied off the heels of Dow Jones resulting in Superfine being hampered close to the finishing line.

RACE 3 - ARISTOCRAT HANDICAP 1,550M

Dectatur was slow to begin. When questioned concerning Hawaiian Chimes leading, Mr K Forbes, representing trainer P Perry, stated that similar instructions had been given at its first Australian start on 22 August 2001 at Warwick Farm but the mare on that occasion over the much shorter journey did not show sufficient speed to take up a forward position. J Morris (Crystal Bay) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in rounding the first turn resulting in Decatur being taken in on to Jactris which resulted in Queen Of The Ocean being tightened between Jactris and Salinsky and having to be checked and losing its rightful running. J Morris’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 9 September 2001 and to expire on Sunday 27 September 2001 on which day he may ride. D Beadman (Sand Dunes) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in at the entrance to the straight resulting in Salinsky being taken out causing Crystal Bay to be checked when tightened on to the hindquarters of Jactris. D Beadman’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 9 September 2001 and to expire on Saturday 22 September 2001 on which day he may ride.

RACE 4 - NEIL JONES CONSULTING SUPERFECTA 1,200M

Prior to the start of this race stewards interviewed trainer J O’Shea and owners E Tsalikis and S Ellis regarding the ownership of Au Naturale. Acting on an undertaking that the problems affecting the transfer of ownership for that runner would be attended to, the stewards allowed Au Naturale to start but ruled it be ineligible to start again until the transfer of ownership is in order. Near the 1000M Au Naturale was checked when crowded for room by Citihonours, which in turn was taken in by The Vagrant (S Pollard) which shifted in away from Dr Freeze. Apprentice Pollard was reprimanded and advised to make more effort to keep his mounts straight in similar circumstances. The Vagrant raced fiercely in the early and middle stages. Au Naturale was momentarily held up for a clear run at the entrance to the straight. Apprentice B Timmis, the rider of Danarama, was fined $100 for use of the whip on a runner out of contention.

RACE 5 - KONAMI HANDICAP 1,100M

Trainer N Mayfield-Smith was fined $50 for nominating Monte Fino for this event when ineligible. Entertaining was slow to begin.

RACE 6 - MIDDLETONS MOORE & BEVINS HANDICAP 1,200M

Mukka Damarto, which had been fractious in the stalls, reared as the gates were released dislodging J Cassidy. After viewing the videos the stewards declared correct weight and ruled that Mukka Damarto must barrier trial to their satisfaction prior to its next race start. Appian was crowded for room at the start between Britney and Sibyl both of which shifted ground. Shortly after entering the straight when Britney improved into a narrow run between She Sizzles (S Pollard) and Sibyl, She Sizzles shifted out slightly and made contact with Britney resulting in that horse becoming unbalanced. Shortly after Sibyl was taken in by Explosive Love (B York) which resulted in Britney losing its running. Apprentice Pollard and B York were both advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Apprentice S Pollard (She Sizzles) stated that his mount travelled reasonable well until leaving the 400M but was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post race veterinary examination of She Sizzles did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 7 - PACIFIC GAMING HANDICAP 1,550M

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Danefull L Beasley stated that his mount was stirred up in the barriers then overraced throughout and never settled. A post race veterinary examination of Danefull did not reveal any abnormalities. A swab sample was taken. C Brown (Wet Lips) was fined $200 for returning to scale in excess of one kilogram overweight. M De Montfort (Koala Kon) was spoken to concerning the amount of vigour he displayed in the early part of the straight and was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts so as to leave no room for query.

RACE 8 - INTERNATIONAL GAME TECHNOLOGY SUPERFECTA 1,900M

As the field left the enclosure Showzeel ran backwards, made heavy contact with the enclosure fence and dislodged its rider B York resulting in Showzeel being withdrawn at 4.57pm Stewards subsequently ordered that all bets made on Showzeel including quinellas and multiple doubles incorporating that horse, be refunded in full and that all bets made with bookmakers be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of successful tickets: traditional win and each-way bets: 8 cents win, 9 cents place; quinellas 16 cents; multiple doubles 8 cents. Prince Hal stood flatfooted as the gates were released. Passing the winning post on the first occasion Our Siam was crowded for room by Mountain Echo which laid in away from Romeo George. Kesia got its head up and raced fiercely in the early and middle stages when being restrained. At the entrance to the straight Optimax had to alter course to the inside of the heels of Strange when that horse shifted out. Over the concluding stages Strange shifted out under pressure resulting in Monte Mist and Fylo Bedow being inconvenienced. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner Kesia compared to its ninth placing at Rosehill on 25 August 2001, trainer C Waller stated that as instanced in the stewards' report Kesia was not suited by being ridden in the lead where it overraced badly and was a beaten horse prior to the turn. He stated that as advised to the stewards and as announced, an endeavour was made today to ride Kesia back in the field similar to the manner in which the mare had been ridden at Canterbury on 8 August 2001. Mr Waller was advised that now that Kesia had re-established form it would be expected to race up to it. When questioned regarding Strange racing in the lead today, L Olsen stated that she had not been given any specific instructions but on the belief that there would be little pace in the race had gone forward and then was obliged when trapped wide to continue forward and eventually lead.
