Canterbury (NSW) - Wednesday 26 September 2001
RACE 1: Cornucopia Committee Inc. Handicap 1100m:

Prude and Viva Voce were slow to begin. Approaching the first turn From The Cellar had to be steadied away from the heels of Skoozi's Girl (G. Boss), which shifted in. G. Boss was reminded that he must ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. After the running of this race the track was upgraded to good at 12.55pm.

RACE 2: The Yachts Of Seabourn Handicap 1100m:

When questioned concerning the tactics adopted on the winner, Bushra Gem, as compared to its last start 6th at Warwick Farm on 16 September C. Munce stated that on that occasion he was asked to ride his mount in behind and got further back than intended in a fast run race. He stated that today he had been instructed to be off pace, but when Bushra Gem jumped keenly and nothing sought to lead he was left in front. Trainer Mr R. Rosengreen was notified that in similar circumstances he must ensure that he advise the Stewards of a change in race tactics. When questioned D. Beasley (Proven True) stated that he was under instructions from his barrier to ride his mount quietly, however, the gelding commenced to pull hard and he was unable to restrain and come back behind the field. D. Beasley agreed that in retrospect he had erred in then not allowing Proven True, which was trapped three wide throughout, to stride forward. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Magic Heights App. R. Whitworth stated that his mount jumped awkwardly resulting in him becoming unbalanced and getting on the mouth of the gelding. He said that after this Magic Heights showed no pace, never travelled and did not respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination of Magic Heights revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr P. Dombkins stated that Magic Heights had done particularly well since its win at Newcastle on 13 September and he could offer no explanation for today's performance. The Stewards ruled that before Magic Heights is permitted to race again it must barrier trial to their satisfaction and they requested Mr Dombkins to notify them if there was anything amiss with Magic Heights in the days subsequent.

RACE 3: Blondies Hair Stylists Handicap 1250m:

Monte Drift was a late withdrawal at 1.30pm on veterinary advice that the gelding had sustained a laceration to the off-hind pastern. Prior to the declaration of correct weight the Stewards were advised by the judge that due to a misoperation of the video finish equipment no print of the finish for 1st placing was available, however, both the judge and his assistant had manually placed Academe 1st and Mac's Success 2nd. After viewing the video of the finish and acting on their own observations the Stewards confirmed the placings and declared correct weight. Rubner was slow to begin. At the entrance to the straight Academe was disappointed for a run between Captain Daylight and Majestic Design. At the same point Black Ale was momentarily cramped for room by Mareb, which shifted in. When Academe (P. Payne) shifted out near the 300m to obtain clear running, Lodgent was hampered. P. Payne was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

RACE 4: De Bortoli Wines Superfecta 1550m:

D. Beasley replaced C. Brown as the rider of Magic Tumbler due to C. Brown being inadvertently engaged. Clothilde was slow to begin. J. Cassidy (Regal Wood) advised that his mount took charge and went forward from the barrier and overraced badly throughout. Trainer Mr G. Rogerson advised that he would now remove the blinkers from Regal Wood. Mr A. Denham, representing trainer Mr J. Denham, indicated that Cypress, which raced disappointingly, will be spelled.

RACE 5: Ruwald & Associates Advertising Handicap 1550m:

The Vagrant was slow to begin.

RACE 6: Sterling Plate 2800m:

Meet The Stars stood flatfooted at the start. Throughout the early stages Forest Bend, Rivadel and Zirascible were inclined to overrace. A post-race veterinary examination of Blueborough, which raced disappointingly, revealed no abnormality.

RACE 7: Corporate Express Handicap 1100m:

St. Georgina was slow to begin. Shalaal was tightened for room shortly after the start between Niagara Kate and Burkina Miss, which shifted in away from Runs On Dreams.

RACE 8: Ansett Australia Superfecta 1250m:

On jumping Pentone was tightened for room between Seafront and Prince Planet, both of which shifted ground. Passing the 300m Musical Beat, which was inclined to lay in, struck the heels of Georgie Barron. Slang was unable to obtain clear running over the concluding stages. Wild Style, which was badly held up, had to be checked when disappointed for a run between Georgie Barron and Musical Beat, which shifted in passing the 200m, and when clear over the final 100m Wild Style was inclined to lay in. When questioned regarding the performance of Zoilus D. Beadman stated that the mare, which was racing first up today, commenced to give ground passing the 200m, and then approaching the 100m he eased his mount down when slightly crowded between Slang and Forever Snipped. Post-race veterinary examinations of Zoilus and Wild Style revealed no abnormalities.
