Cheltenham (SA) - Saturday 1 September 2001
Track: Slow
Weather: Overcast/Showery
Rail: Normal Position

RACE 1: BLACKWELL FUNERALS PROSPECT HURDLE

J. Wallace replaced G. Dorol as the rider of PAISANO owing to G. Dorol being indisposed due to injury.

Mr. E. Musgrove, trainer of PYRAMID PARK and SLOANE, was fined the sum of $100 for failing to declare riders for those horses at the required time.

The start of this race was delayed three minutes owing to ZOFF’S LAD having to be replated at the barrier.

A swab sample was taken from SLOANE, winner of the race.

PAISANO (J. Wallace) was slow to begin.

PAISANO fell at the hurdle situated in the vicinity of the 1300 metre mark. Neither J. Wallace, rider of that gelding, nor PAISANO suffered any injuries as a result of the fall.

RACE 2: BLACKWELL PRE-PAID FUNERAL HANDICAP

IMPERIAL TRISK was subjected to a Veterinary inspection at the start after that mare became extremely agitated in its stall. As a result, IMPERIAL TRISK was passed fit to take its place in the field.

A swab sample was taken from I KEN, winner of the race.

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres, ZOFFANOBIA (B. Vale) shifted in; at the same time, RASS BRIGHTIA (J. Bowditch) attempted to take a run on the inside of that horse. In consequence RASS BRIGHTIA was taken in onto PATAUDI (C. Symons) resulting in that gelding being tightened and having to ease. As a result KUBLAI KHAN (L. Smith), which was racing behind PATAUDI, was hampered. Stewards took no further action as they believed no one rider was responsible.

In the vicinity of the 700 metres, RASS BRIGHTIA (J. Bowditch) and KUBLAI KHAN (L. Smith) bumped together.

Following the running of this race Stewards reclassified the track from Slow to Heavy.

RACE 3: DARYL BLACKWELL HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from LADY GLENLEIGH, winner of the race.

On jumping away, GHOST FLIGHT (Darren Holland) shifted in resulting in contact being made with LADY GLENLEIGH (J. Bowditch).

In the vicinity of the 1300 metres ASIAN WARRIOR (C. Symons), which commenced to race fiercely, shifted out, resulting in contact being made with MANILOW (.J Maund) and as a result that colt showed a tendency to lay in for some distance. Both MANILOW and ASIAN WARRIOR showed a tendency to over race for some distance following this incident.

RACE 4: BLACKWELL FUNERALS & PAYNEHAM HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from COURT HERO (NZ), winner of the race.

BLUESTONE VILLA (J. Bowditch) and WISP (C. Symons) were both slow to begin.

JEUNEOLA STAR (B. Claridge) jumped away awkwardly.

A Veterinary inspection of GOLDGIFT following the running of the race revealed a poor cardiac recovery rate. As a result Mr D Balfour, trainer of the mare, was advised that the result of an ECG would be required to be lodged with the Stewards and that GOLDGIFT would have to trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official trial before accepting for any future events.

RACE 5: BLACKWELL FUNERALS MORPHETT VALE HANDICAP

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of ACCELERTING at 1.00 pm following a request from Mr. M. Whittle, trainer of that gelding, to scratch ACCELERATING owing to the reclassification of the track from slow to heavy.

A swab sample was taken from BLUE TED, winner of the race.

A Veterinary inspection of ABERDEEN ROSE (NZ) following the running of the race revealed lameness in the near fore shoulder.

RACE 6: A KNIGHT’S TALE HANDICAP

G. O’Loughlin replaced D. Carney as the rider of MOET NOW owing to D. Carney being excessively overweight. That rider was subsequently fined the sum of $100 under ARR 120(b).

A swab sample was taken from DEACONESS, winner of the race.

DEACONESS (. Azis) was disappointed for a run from racing inside the 500 metres to within the vicinity of the 400 metres.

Stewards questioned C. Buchiw rider of BUFFALO POWER and Mr. L. Macdonald, trainer of that gelding, in relation to the riding tactics adopted by C. Buchiw over the concluding 400 metres of the race. Subsequently, that rider was charged with Incompetent Riding under ARR 137(a), the particulars being that, racing to and inside the 200 metres, C. Buchiw had failed to ride her mount BUFFALO POWER with sufficient vigour and initiative. After being found guilty of the charge C. Buchiw was suspended from riding in races to commence from midnight on the 5 September and to expire at midnight on the 10 October 2001; a period of five metropolitan meetings.

A Veterinary inspection and endoscoping of BAITENHAUSEN revealed that gelding was suffering from pharyngitis.

RACE 7: BLACKWELL FUNERALS SPRING STAKES

A swab sample was taken from FLAVOUR, winner of the race.

In the vicinity of the 1000 metres STAR JOE (NZ) (J. Bowditch) commenced to race ungenerously and whilst being restrained shifted in, resulting in DANGEROUS REEF (J. Lorensini) being tightened for galloping room and being forced to ease and lose its position. Stewards took no further action as they believed no one rider was responsible.

RACE 8: ALCOHOL GO-EASY CUP

A swab sample was taken from AT RISK, winner of the race.

Rounding the home turn JETWAY (G. O’Loughlin) shifted in slightly; at the same time EASY LANDING(J. Bowditch) shifted out, resulting in CURRENCY REP (J. Maund) being hampered between those two horses.

RACE 9: BLACKWELL FUNERALS TORRENSVILLE HANDICAP

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of HIP HOP at 1.00 pm following a request from Mr. D. Jolly, trainer of that mare, to scratch HIP HOP owing to the reclassification of the track from Slow to Heavy.

Swab samples were taken from the dead-heaters in the event, KEDRON and BITOVATUNE.

Racing inside the 1300 metres MYSTIC GREY (T. Creek) shifted in when insufficiently clear of WORK AND PLAY (J. Bowditch) resulting in that gelding being taken in onto EMMA JO (S. Price) who in turn was taken in onto NO DEPOSIT (N. Wilson) resulting in that gelding being taken in and touching the hindquarters of CUBITON (B. Claridge). As a result of the pressure applied to NO DEPOSIT that gelding was forced to check and lose its position. T. Creek was subsequently charged with Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and after being found guilty of the charge was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 5 September and to expire at midnight on the 22 September 2001; a period of three metropolitan meetings.
