Cheltenham (SA) - Saturday 9 March 2002

TRACK: GOOD
WEATHER: FINE
Rail: Out 5 metres from 1450 metres to the Winning Post

RACE 1: CARLTON DRAUGHT HANDICAP

All runners were examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start.

REGICIDE (D Holland) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in tightening DODGER (S Price) on to MILANOVA (J Bowditch) resulting in that filly being inconvenienced, taken in and brushing DARK HORIZON (W Kerford), which became unbalanced.

Approaching the 200 metres REGICIDE (D Holland) shifted in onto DARK HORIZON (W Kerford), which was obliged to check and lose its position. D Holland was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and was suspended from a period to commence at midnight on Thursday 14 March to midnight Saturday 23 March a period of two metropolitan meetings.

Correct was delayed to allow W Kerford the rider of DARK HORIZON to view the official video footage in the straight. After having done so W Kerford lodged an objection against REGICIDE (D Holland) being placed third on the grounds of interference approaching the 200 metres. After considering the evidence and viewing the official video and acting on their own observations, Stewards dismissed this objection.

RACE 2: BLACKWELL FUNERALS HANDICAP

IRISH JANTEE (S Price) jumped away awkwardly.

RACE 3: PMP PRINT HANDICAP

Mr J Bugg the trainer of KING ROYALE was questioned regarding an apparent change in riding tactics for that gelding. Mr Bugg advised that he had instructed J Potter to attempt to ride the gelding mid field at least one horse off the fence and to attempt to improve his position in the vicinity of the 700 metres. J Potter acknowledged his instructions and stated that approaching the winning post, on the first occasion, he had been dictated to by EVANS on his outside and was therefore obliged to race forward. After viewing the official footage Stewards took no action other than to advise J Potter that he might in future make a greater endeavour to carry out his instructions.

Subsequent to the race TRISTACE (NZ) was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding showed signs of respiratory distress.

RACE 4: STUART CRYSTAL HANDICAP

LUSKIN’S PROUD (D Carney) jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start LUSKIN’S PROUD (D Carney), which was inclined to lay in away from other runners shifted in resulting in SADLER JOH (S Price) being tightened and losing its position.

LUSKIN’S PROUD (D Carney) got its head up and raced fiercely in the middle stages of the race. D Carney explained that he would have preferred to allow FAVA (B Claridge) to lead and take a trail, however, he had been unable to take this option owing to his mounts manners.

In the vicinity of the 100 metres KEGON (NZ) (D Tootell) shifted in abruptly and contacted EURO CONNECTION (T Creek) which became unbalanced when taken in onto FAVA (B Claridge), which was inconvenienced.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of LUSKIN’S PROUD revealed that gelding to be lame in both fore limbs. Mr D G Balfour the trainer of LUSKIN’S PROUD undertook to report to Steward’s the results of a further veterinary examination during the week.

RACE 5: CHRISTIES BEACH HOTEL HANDICAP

The start of this race was delayed owing to RENANO BRIGHTIA proving reluctant to be loaded. Mr L Smith the trainer of the filly was advised that a repetition of its behaviour would lead to action being taken against it.

CLASSICALMA (B Vale) jumped away awkwardly.

GOLDEN TAOS (D Carney) jumped inwards hampering GORGEOUS GURU (J Holder), which was taken in onto FONNIX (W Kerford), which was tightened on to DEMOLITION DAME (B Claridge) resulting in that filly being hampered.

When questioned, J Bowditch the rider of GINGER RAJA explained that his mount had not begun as well as he would have liked. He added that although he would have preferred to travel closer to the lead GINGER RAJA had travelled well three wide. J Bowditch added that considering the final sectional of the race he had been disappointed with the manner in which his mount had finished off.

Subsequent to the race GINGER RAJA was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of GORGEOUS GURU revealed that filly to exhibit lower back muscle pain.

RACE 6: SCHWEPPES HANDICAP

Racing to the 1000 metres BRICKLIN’S BROTHER (L Meech), which was inclined to lay in away from SQUIRTLE (T Creek) shifted in and brushed PURE GOLD (J Lyon) resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.

RACE 7: CASTLE TAVERN HANDICAP

T Creek was notified as the rider of AVIATE.

Stewards will seek an explanation from apprentice M Pegus and his Master Mr R F Cameron as to why M Pegus, after being declared as the rider of NEWSFLASH, failed to fulfil that obligation in order to determine if a breach of ARR 85B. has occurred.

Stewards withdrew AWAY WITH FAIRIES at 3.51pm acting on Veterinary advice from both Club Veterinary Surgeons that the filly was unfit to race as it showed a reaction to the remnants of a boil in the offside of its mouth. Mr G Frew representing Mr L Macdonald was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness would be required before AWAY WITH FAIRIES accepted for a future event.

BLUE TED (D Carney) required farrier attention prior to the start.

BLUE TED (D Carney) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres RUSTY DUSTY GREY (R Faehr) clipped the heels of NEWSFLASH (M Hoppo) and became unbalanced and shifted out abruptly across the heels of AL BATROUN (G Dorol).

Racing to the 200 metres LIQUID LUNCH (S Price) was disappointed when attempting a run inside RUSTY DUSTY GREY, which rolled in and again near the 100 metres LIQUID LUNCH was disappointed when attempting a run inside DORADOS (D Tootell) and outside AVIATE (T Creek), which commenced to roll out.

C Buchiw, rider of the sixth placegetter JESTER’S EDGE was questioned as to the reasons for her to failing to weigh in. After considering C Buchiw’s explanation she was reprimanded.
