Track: Slow (later upgraded)
Weather: Cool & Fine
Rail:
Normal

RACE 1 – BELLOTTO HANDICAP - 1350 metres

The start of this race was delayed owing to the blinkers on JUST VIC requiring replacement. Subsequent to the race the blinkers were examined by the Stewards and found to be of a satisfactory quality, however, Miss K. Huxtable was reminded of her obligations under ARR 140A.

CLEARVIEW BAY (J. Potter) was slow to jump.

Approaching the 200 metres RUN LIKE BLEVIC (M. Neilson) was inclined to lay in under pressure.

CARNDONAGH suffered an abrasion to the off hind hock during the race.

Subsequent to the race Stewards reassessed the track conditions and upgraded the track to Dead.

RACE 2 – JETBALL HANDICAP - 1400 metres

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to permit C. Bryant, the rider of the second placegetter, SUNTURWASI, to view the official footage in the straight. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, C. Bryant declined an option to lodge an objection and Correct Weight was declared.

Subsequent to the race BELLOTTO PRINCESS was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported soreness and swelling in the off fore sesamoid ligaments. Mr. J. Dunn, the trainer of BELLOTTO PRINCESS, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for a future event.

RACE 3 – JEUNE HANDICAP - 1000 metres

CORPS COMMANDER (M. Neilson) jumped away awkwardly and brushed the outside gate.

On jumping away DISCO TIME (T. Creek) shifted out contacting CUBITON (N. Tomizawa), which was hampered.

Approaching the 200 metres C. Bryant momentarily lost his off side rein.

Near the 200 metres SIR ARCHER (C. Bryant) shifted in and tightened CORPS COMMANDER (M. Neilson) onto the hindquarters of BLUESTONE VILLA (B. Claridge), which was hampered and became unbalanced. C. Bryant was severely reprimanded and advised, in future, to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

Mr. P.W. Jolly, the trainer of CUBITON, was questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of the gelding. Mr. Jolly explained that he had been disappointed with CUBITON’s recent efforts over longer distances. In an attempt to improve its form he had given CUBITON a brief let up outside the stable and kept the gelding fresh. He added that the addition of blinkers, the small field and the pace of the race may also have assisted CUBITON. Mr. Jolly was advised these explanations would be reported.

RACE 4 – AKHADAN GRAND NATIONAL HURDLE - 3450 metres

MR. LIGHTFOOT (B. Constable) jumped the first fence awkwardly, shifted in and inconvenienced KASTABON (NZ) (W. Williams).

He added that he had commenced to ride ZABUAN (NZ) prior to the 1000 metres and the gelding had finished the race off strongly in its normal manner. ZABUAN (NZ) was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported a lower than expected heart rate.

Subsequent to the race MR. LIGHTFOOT was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had sustained no injuries.

RACE 5 – DESERT SUN HANDICAP - 1800 metres

On arrival on course the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon inspected OLONGOPO and reported the gelding to be exhibiting soreness in its near fore foot as a result of a bruised sole. Acting on Veterinary advice that OLONGOPO was not fit to start, Stewards withdrew the gelding at 12.18 pm.

An objection was lodged by J. Bowditch, the rider of the second placegetter AVIATE, against the winner LOONG HAR (S. Price) on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding 200 metres. After considering the evidence tendered, viewing the official films and acting on their own observations, Stewards DISMISSED this objection.

S. Price, the rider of LOONG HAR, was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under 137(a) in that he had failed to attempt to relieve the pressure applied to AVIATE (J. Bowditch) and MORE ACTION (C. Bryant) from approximately the 150 metres to approaching the finish. He was suspended from riding for a period to commence at midnight on Thursday, 25th July and to expire at midnight on Wednesday, 31st July 2002; a period of two meetings. Tootell lodged an objection against the second placegetter ROYAL TANGO (C. Bryant) on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding 200 metres. After considering the evidence tendered, on viewing the official films and acting on their own observations, Stewards DISMISSED this objection.

Tootell) onto PURE GOLD (P. Gatt) and then continued to permit his mount to shift in resulting in TO PAY UP being forced to check off the heels of GRACEFUL TASARINA (A. Findlay). He was suspended from riding for a period to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 24th July and to expire at midnight on Wednesday, 7th August 2002; a period of five meetings.
