RACE 1: BONNETTS SADDLEWORTH HANDICAP - 1250m

CACCIANI (NZ) was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon at the barriers prior to the race and ruled fit to start.

Mr S Gower, trainer of SHE’S WONDERFUL, which proved difficult to load, was advised that a repetition of the fillies behaviour might lead to action being taken against it.

On jumping away, BIOCARD (Damien Holland) shifted in and brushed with ANGEL OF HARLEM (M Zahra), which was inconvenienced.

Near the 1000 metres, BELLOTTO PRINCESS (J Holder) was obliged to steady off the heels of THESE DAYS (T Creek). In being steadied, BELLOTTO PRINCESS got its head up for a short distance.

CACCIANI (NZ) (D Tootell), which was inclined to lay out making the turn into the straight, was eased out of the race in the vicinity of the 200 metres. D Tootell reported that he had become concerned by the filly’s action. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of CACCIANI (NZ) revealed that it appeared to be favouring it’s near fore leg.

Stewards questioned D O’Heare, rider of QUIET SMYTZER, into the reasons for its apparent disappointing performance. D O’Heare stated that QUIET SMYTZER had travelled well throughout the race and had relaxed in running. When placed under pressure in the straight it had not responded to its riding. D O’Heare added that in his opinion QUIET SMYTZER might be better suited at shorter distances. Mr J T Hall, trainer of QUIET SMYTZER, advised that it was the filly’s first attempt at 1200 metres and that he had some concerns about its ability to get that distance. He added that QUIET SMYZTER had pleased his stable in the lead-up to today’s event. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of QUIET SMYTZER failed to reveal any visible abnormalities. Mr Hall was advised that the filly would be required to perform satisfactory in an official barrier trial before accepting for any future event.

She stated that she would have preferred to have settled further back in running and attempted to obtain a position on the back of RUSTY DUSTY GREY early in the race, however, due to the pace of the race RALLY had commenced to race keenly and rather than fight her mount and race wide she allowed it to roll forward.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres, HAND PASS (B Claridge) was inclined to lay in on to QUEEN MIDAS (J Maund) resulting in those horse brushing on a number of occasions.

D Yendall the rider of AL ZIMER explained that owing to his mount missing the start it was obliged to travel in the field.
