Cheltenham (SA) - Saturday 27 October 2001
Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: Normal Position

RACE 1: AAPT CHAMPIONSHIPS HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from GREENSWARD, winner of the race.

ANOTHER GEM (J Holder) knuckled over on jumping away.

BELTELLO (D Holland) jumped away awkwardly resulting in that gelding shifting out and making contact with TORMENTUS (J Bowditch).

RACE 2: JAYCO CARAVANS HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from ROSE BEAT (NZ), winner of the race.

W Kerford reported to Stewards that NEW TRADER had travelled well in the early and middle stages of the race, but when asked for an effort in the vicinity of the home turn had failed to respond to his riding. A Veterinary inspection of NEW TRADER following the running of the race revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3: POPE PACKAGING HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from HE’S BACK ON TRACK (NZ), winner of the race.

Racing in the vicinity of the 300 metres SOUND (W Kerford) shifted in, resulting in that gelding brushing DEACONESS (S Price), resulting in that mare becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

Racing in the vicinity of the 200 metres IT’S A PRINTER (D Azis) was disappointed for a run for a short distance when trapped behind the tiring COSIPURA.

A Veterinary inspection of SOUTHERN WAY, following the running of the race, revealed the gelding had shown signs of possibly taking wind in behind during the running of the race.

RACE 4: BILLSON & SAWLEY HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from TOMONDE, winner of the race.

AMBERLIGHT (T Creek) jumped outwards at the start.

CROWNED LOVE (S Price) jumped away awkwardly, resulting in that filly shifting in onto PRIOR MINISTER (J Holder), who in turn was taken in, making contact with the hindquarters of SUMMER WIND (C Buchiw), resulting in that filly becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

Racing inside the 600 metres, and for some considerable distance, CROWNED LOVE (S Price) had difficulty in gaining clear galloping room when disappointed for a run behind the tiring RURAL FORREST (J Maund).

RACE 5: STRATHMORE HOTEL HANDICAP

The start of this race was delayed two minutes owing to SIR ARCHER undergoing a Veterinary inspection at the start, which revealed the gelding was sore in the near fore foot. Acting on Veterinary advice, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SIR ARCHER at 2.46pm. All bets on that horse were declared off. Bets on other runners were reduced at the rate of 5 cents in the dollar on the face value of the ticket for the win, and 6 cents in the dollar from the winnings only for the place.

A swab sample was taken from LAZING ABOUT, winner of the race.

CHEKWENYA (J Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly, resulting in that gelding shifting in onto SHAYE SPICE (J Holder), resulting in that mare being taken in onto NOBILITY (L Nolen), who in turn was taken in on to APTEGO (T Creek), resulting in both APTEGO and NOBILITY bumping together and becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres LAZING ABOUT (J Nevin) shifted in, resulting in CHEKWENYA, which had commenced to race fiercely, being forced to ease and shift ground to the inside of the heels of LAZING ABOUT, resulting in contact being made with APTEGO (T Creek). J Nevin was advised by Stewards that although not totally responsible for the incident, he would be required to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

Shortly after the entering the straight NOBILITY (L Nolen) was disappointed for a run and forced to ease off the heels of the tiring JESTARELLA BOY (P Gatt).

A Veterinary inspection and scoping of JESTARELLA BOY, following the running of the race, revealed that gelding was suffering from pharyngitis.

RACE 6: BROADWAY BUTCHERS HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from NOBLE GLOW, winner of the race.

OUR KING COUNTRY (B Vale) was slow to begin.

BOOGIE KNIGHT (D Carney) jumped away awkwardly.

Stewards questioned L Nolen, rider of AFTER BEUNE, in relation to his riding tactics adopted on that mare during the early and middle stages of the race. L Nolen reported to Stewards that he had been instructed to ride AFTER BEUNE in a position that the mare felt comfortable in. As a result, he had elected not to place AFTER BEUNE under any pressure in the early stages of the race, although he was aware this action would result in him not utilising barrier one. L Nolen further stated that racing between the 800 metres, to in the vicinity of the 500 metres, he had elected to attempt to obtain a run on the inside of other runners, as he believed the mare was not travelling well enough to sustain a run around the field. L Nolen further stated that in the straight AFTER BEUNE responded to his riding and had finished off the race in a positive manner. Stewards advised L Nolen that under similar circumstances he would be expected to show more initiative in the early stages of a race.

RACE 7: HONDA INTEGRA TYPE-R HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from BISHA MON, winner of the race.

On jumping away, NOTHING BUT GOLD (J Holder) shifted out onto SPRING HAVEN (C Buchiw), taking that gelding out; at the same time NALOM (J Bowditch) shifted in. As a result, GLIDING EAGLE (B Vale), which had been racing between SPRING HAVEN and NALOM, was tightened for galloping room.

NOTHING BUT GOLD (J Holder) showed a tendency to over race during the middle stages of the race.

Racing in the vicinity of the 700 metres BISHA MON (D Tootell), which commenced to race fiercely, shifted out when being restrained, resulting in NOTHING BUT GOLD (J Holder) being tightened for galloping room between BISHA MON and SPRING HAVEN (C Buchiw).

Stewards questioned J Maund, rider of KELTRITA, into his riding tactics over the concluding 400 metres of the race. J Maund reported to Stewards that KELTRITA had changed strides on a number of occasions mid-race and had been reluctant to go forward over the concluding 400 metres, despite his riding. J Maund further reported to Stewards he believed that KELTRITA had changed strides on a number of occasions again in the straight. A Veterinary inspection of KELTRITA, following the running of the race, revealed no visible abnormalities. Stewards noted the explanations tendered by J Maund.

RACE 8: SCHWEPPES HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from COMFORTS, winner of the race.

KILORA QUEEN (S Price) was slow to begin.

STYLISH RESPONSE (L Smith) jumped away awkwardly, resulting in that rider losing the use of his near side iron for approximately 100 metres.

Rounding the home turn BALLATA (J Nevin) shifted out when attempting to improve its position. At the same time RUSTY DUSTY GREY (T Creek), which was showing a tendency to lay in, shifted in slightly. As a result, CHIPS ARE DOWN (Damien Holland), which was racing between those two horses and had commenced to weaken and lose its position, was tightened for galloping room and became unbalanced for a short distance.
