Darwin (NT) - Saturday 26 January 2002
WEATHER: FINE
TRACK: GOOD

RACE TWO CLASS D HCP – 1OOO M

Shortly after the start FINE OPTION, which was racing ungenerously, rolled out which resulted in HOKAIDO having to be eased off it’s heels and MONSOONS, which was racing outside HOKAIDO having to be eased off that mare’s heels. After being restrained HOKAIDO had a tendency to throw its head in the air and race ungenerously.

Near the 700 metres RED CENTRE RACER, which was overracing, had to be checked off the heels of MR. ILLUMINATOR. M Osmond, rider of RED CENTRE RACER stated that he had been instructed to ride the colt back in the field, however it overraced and was attempting to race up on the inside of MR ILLUMINATOR where there was insufficient room.

Near the 400 metres S Brownbill (a), rider of NICE WAYS dropped his whip.

Mr D Leech, trainer of NICE WAYS was fined $50 for negligence (AR8(e)) in the saddling of that gelding as it was presented with the incorrect saddlecloth number. S Brownbill (a) was severely reprimanded for failing to properly check the saddlecloth number prior to giving his gear to Mr Leech to saddle NICE WAYS.

Stewards reprimanded P Denton and notified him that in future he must ensure he is 2 lengths clear prior to shifting ground.

RACE EIGHT OPEN HCP – 12OO M

On jumping away PIM and CITYKAT both bounded in the air and jumped awkwardly.

Stewards questioned P Denton, rider of TERRITORY EDITON, which performed below expectations. P Denton stated that the gelding raced up behind the leaders and then when BROOKLYN BYULLET raced up on his outside near the 700 metres the gelding did not appreciate it and failed to improve from that point on. He also stated that the gelding in his opinion does not race well inside other runners and that other than that he could offer no explanation. A veterinary examination of TERRITORY EDITION failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.

Near the 400 metres NEARMISS was taken in onto CHROMIUM by LOCHTON LASS (M Osmond), which rolled in. The interference was accentuated by CHROMIUM, which was weakening badly. However stewards notified M Osmond that he must ensure he gives riders on his inside sufficient racing room.

Stewards questioned J Hallam(a) rider of SOLTRICE, which performed below expectations. J Hallam (a) stated that the mare was tardy at the start and showed little interest in racing, however appeared to pull up alright.

A veterinary examination of CHROMIUM revealed that the gelding had pulled up lame in the off foreleg.
