Flemington (VIC) - Sunday 3 February 2002
Track: DEAD
Weather: OVERCAST
Rail:
OUT TWELVE METRES FOR THE ENTIRE CIRCUIT

Riding Changes:

Race Horse Rider Replaced By Reason
"Varsilayos"  Patrick Payne   S. Arnold Indisposed

Race 1 - JAYCO CARAVANS SPRINT - 1000 metres:

"Singarda" was slow to begin.

Shortly after jumping away "Costalette" and "Rory's Babe" came together.

Throughout the race "Costalette" hung in and due to this had to be eased off the heels of "Singarda", which improved on its inside, after passing the 100 metres.

Race 2 - IRISH DAY AT FLEMINGTON HANDICAP - 1420 metres:

Prior to correct weight being declared M. Zahra, rider of "Night's upon Us", fourth placegetter, viewed the Stewards' patrol video and decided not to lodge an objection.

In the straight "Change of Control" was unable to obtain a clear run, and near the 200 metres, when disappointed for a run between "Casa Mia" and "Belle Princess" made contact with the hindquarters of "Belle Princess", and turned that mare outwards.

"Night's upon Us" also had difficulty in obtaining a clear run, and passing the 200 metres had to be checked when disappointed for a run between "Casa Mia" and "Gold Bay", which shifted out slightly. In the incident "Night's upon Us" was accidentally struck on the head by the whip of Scott Seamer, rider of "Gold Bay".

Approaching the winning post "Loire Valley", which had a tendency to lay out, was inconvenienced when tightened slightly by "Gold Bay", which shifted in.

Race 3 - MITTY'S TALINDERT STAKES - 1100 metres:

On the way to the barrier "Prosperous Bid (NZ)", which was being led to the barrier by a Clerk of the Course, broke away, reared over, and dislodged its jockey, and galloped down the track riderless. Acting on veterinary advice the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Prosperous Bid (NZ)" at 1.37 p.m.

Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered on "Prosperous Bid (NZ)" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of "Prosperous Bid (NZ)" be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Seven cents; Place Bets: Eight cents; Winning Concession Bets: Seven cents, and Doubles Bets: Seven cents.

All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of ticket.

As a result of this incident the start of the race was delayed.

"Took a Chance" was slow to begin.

"Recruiting" jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

For some distance approaching the 800 metres "Nikos" was taken in by "France Soir", which was hanging in. "Nikos" then had to be eased, and shifted out across the heels of "France Soir".

In the middle stages of the race "Sin Pensarlo" raced greenly.

Race 4 - SNOWHITE HANDICAP - 1800 metres:

After being placed in its stall "Scenic Quest" became fractious, and then became temporarily cast. "Scenic Quest" was removed from the starting stalls, examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon, and passed fit to run. As a result of this the start of the race was delayed.

When the pace steadied near the 1400 metres "Scenic Quest", which was over-racing, got its head up when being checked off the heels of "Tell no Tales", shifted out and hampered "Scarpia". "Rimmer", which was following "Scenic Quest", then had to be chcked off the heels of that gelding.

Approaching the winning post "Wind Storm" had to be steadied off the heels of "Dinmont" which, when hanging out, shifted out under pressure.

Also approaching the winning post "Scenic Quest" had to be eased off the heels of "Allez Gold", which shifted out under pressure.

A veterinary examination of "Sea Change Queen", which weakened over the concluding stages, failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 5 - TEAC CHESTER MANIFOLD STAKES - 1420 metres:

Near the 300 metres "The Secondmortgage (NZ)" was inconvenienced when tightened for room between "Delirious", which was taken in slightly by "Bush Padre" and "Tears Royal", which shifted out under pressure.

Approaching the winning post "Market Price" was blocked for a run behind "Bush Padre" and on the inside of "Sedation".

Race 6 - GILL KANE & BROPHY HANDICAP - 2562 metres:

Shortly after the start "Soldado" and "Red Astaire" were tightened for room between "Karadan (NZ)" and "Ottoman", which was taken out by "Lord Grable".

When asked if there was any explanation for "Kaaptonite" performing below expectations G. Childs could offer no explanation. Childs added that the gelding travelled well throughout the race, but when asked to improve from the 800 metres "Kaaptonite" failed to respond to his riding from the entrance to the straight, and weakened over the concluding stages. G. Childs said that "Kaaptonite" felt normal on pulling up. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 7 - KENSINGTON STAKES - 1100 metres:

"Little Dozer" jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start "Desert Sky" threw its head in the air when being restrained.

"Joie" hung out under pressure over the concluding stages of the race.

Kerrin McEvoy, rider of "Show no Emotion (NZ)" which performed below expectations, stated that the gelding did not feel comfortable throughout the race, and did not respond to his riding. McEvoy added that, although "Show no Emotion (NZ)" had raced well on rain-affected tracks early in its career, he does not believe that the gelding is best suited on rain-affected going at this stage of its career. McEvoy said that "Show no Emotion (NZ)" felt normal on pulling up.

Race 8 - SHAMROCK TRAVEL HANDICAP - 1730 metres:

No report.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races today.

RESUMED INQUIRY:

The Stewards severely reprimanded Shane Tronerud for failing to fulfil his engagement to ride "Our Gemima" in the Black Shoes Handicap - Race 8 - at Sandown on the 28th January, 2002. Shane Tronerud was notified that should he fail to fulfil his engagements in future more severe action may be taken.
