Amended to Good at 2.04 p.m.
Rail: OUT TWO METRES FOR THE ENTIRE CIRCUIT
Race 1 - ALISHAN WELTER - 1200 metres: "Touch the Groom" was slow to begin. Race 2 - THE TEAC DIGITAL - 1600 metres: From the 400 metres "Skinjite" and "Our
Jermyn Street (NZ)" raced tight due to "Our Jermyn Street (NZ)" initially
shifting out slightly, and "Skinjite (NZ)" then laying in under pressure. Race 3 - 2002 INGLIS PREMIER - 1200 metres:
"Newbold Countess", which lashed out in the
Birdcage area, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. "Newbold Countess" was again examined by the
Club's Veterinary Surgeon at the barrier and passed fit to run. On jumping away "Oronoko" shifted in and bumped
"Kapitza", unbalancing that gelding. Near the 400 metres "Compactus", which was
hanging out, shifted out and made contact with "Furla", turning the hindquarters
of that gelding outwards. "Furla" then shifted out and made contact with
"Appian Way". Approaching the 800 metres "Newbold Countess" had
to be eased off the heels of "Sightseer", which shifted in. "Tanami Prince", which had been held up for a run
from the 400 metres, then had to be checked off the heels of "Peace Ruler"
before shifting to the inside of that gelding approaching the 200 metres.. 'Peace Ruler", which had been held up for a run, had
to be checked when disappointed for a run between "Appian Way" and
"Furla" when both those horses shifted ground approaching the 200 metres. Over the concluding stages of the race
"Recruiting" shifted out under pressure. Approaching the winning post "Pick Pocketer",
when giving ground, was inconvenienced when tightened for room by "Appian Way",
which shifted out under pressure. Race 4 - THE BRIGHTON MAZDA - 1400 metres:
On arrival at the barrier "Betula" reared over
and dislodged its rider, G. Boss. Acting on veterinary advice the Stewards ordered the
withdrawal of "Betula" at 2.31 p.m. Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered
on "Betula" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to the
time of withdrawal of "Betula" be subject to the following deductions in the
        dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Six cents; Place Bets: Seven cents;
Winning Concession Bets: Six cents and Doubles Bets: Six cents. All monies bet after the
Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of the ticket. "Moon Dragon" jumped away awkwardly, and lost
ground. Approaching the 1200 metres "Elegant Fashion",
which was laying out, took "Jazz Queen" out on to the hindquarters of "Miss
Precisely", which resulted in both those fillies being turned out. Near the 1000 metres "Sacagawea" threw its head
in the air when being checked off the heels of "Gold Lottey". D. Oliver, rider of "Moon Dragon", stated that
although the filly had missed the start it was their intention to ride the filly back from
its outside barrier. Oliver added that he then had to check off the heels of
"Sacagawea" for some distance approaching and passing the 700 metres. At the entrance to the straight "Moon Dragon" had
to be eased over the heels of "Elegant Fashion" to obtain a clear run on the
inside of that filly. "Gold Lottey" hung in under pressure over the
concluding stages of the race and due to this "Woodwina" had to be steadied off
the heels of that filly approaching the winning post. Race 5 - LIGHTNING STAKES -
1000 metres: Approaching and passing the 200 metres "North
Boy" was held up when disappointed for a run on the outside of "Sir
Chuckle" where there was not quite sufficient room. Approaching the 100 metres "Sportsbrat" had to be
checked when disappointed for a run on the inside of "Tully Dane", which was
taken in slightly by "Corps Commander". "Sportsbrat" then shifted out
and had to be checked off the heels of "Oamaru Force", which was giving ground. Mr. D. Hall, trainer of "Oamaru Force", reported
to the Stewards that subsequent to the race his veterinary surgeon reported that the
horse, which had weakened over the concluding stages, was suffering from a respiratory
complaint. The Stewards notified Mr. Hall that prior to "Oamaru Force" racing
again he must produce a veterinary clearance for it. Race 6 - MITCH DOWD R U WEARING LUCKY BOXERS
HANDICAP - 2000 metres: "Archly" was slow to begin. Race 7 - THE DEBONAIR - 1400 metres: Shortly after the start "Pentastic" was hampered,
and had to be checked when tightened for room between "Tuscanos", which shifted
in, and "Royal Code", which shifted out after being brushed by "Dash for
Cash". Near the 600 metres "Tuscanos" threw its head in
the air when being checked off the heels of "Dash for Cash". P. Payne, rider of "Ustinov", stated that the
colt was left flat-footed when the pace increased from the 500 metres, and that after
being hampered near the 400 metres "Ustinov" took some time to get balanced. After passing the 400 metres "Pentastic", which
had obtained a narrow run on the inside of "Ustinov", was tightened for room
when "Ustinov" shifted in slightly. "Ustinov" then had to be checked, and
"Pentastic" was hampered when tightened for room by "Tuscanos" (P.
Mertens) which, after shifting in to obtain a run on the inside of "Perfect
Crime", then shifted in away from that gelding, which shifted in across the heels of
'Constructor" after being checked when disappointed for a run between that gelding
and "Prince of War". After taking into account all the circumstances, and as
there was some doubt in the minds of the Stewards as to whether P. Mertens was fully
responsible for the interference to "Ustinov" due to the fact that "Perfect
Crime" had shifted in abruptly on its outside, the Stewards took no direct action,
but severely reprimanded P. Mertens, and notified him that he must make a far greater
effort to keep his mount straight when in similar circumstances. "Gordo" hung in, in the straight, and for this
reason had difficulty obtaining a clear run until passing the 200 metres. A veterinary examination of "Ustinov" failed to
reveal any abnormality, and a swab sample was taken from it. Race 8 - VRC YOUNG MEMBERS HANDICAP - 1800
metres: A veterinary examination of "Tina's Debut"
revealed that the mare was in season. A veterinary examination of "Our Riesling (NZ)",
which performed below expectations, failed to reveal any abnormality. SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of
all races today, and from "Ustinov", which performed below expectations, in The
Debonair - Race 7. FINES/EXPLANATIONS: L. Milham was notified as
the rider of "Archly", which ran in the Mitch Dowd R U Wearing Lucky Boxers
Handicap - Race 6 - in accordance with the Rules. |
