| Track:
        GOOD Weather: FINE
Rail: OUT TWO METRES FOR THE ENTIRE CIRCUIT
Riding Changes: Nil Race 1 - SCHWEPPES STEEPLECHASE - 3300
metres: "Down to Zero (NZ)", which was pulled
up prior to the home turn, was found to be sore in the off fore leg. Mr. E. V. Musgrove,
trainer of "Down to Zero (NZ)", was notified that prior to the gelding racing
again he must produce a veterinary clearance for the horse. Race 2 - J. K. GLOBAL TRADING SPRINT - 1000
metres: "Costa Grande" knuckled on jumping away. When the gates were released "River Dove" stood
flat-footed, and then bounded in the air, which resulted in it losing considerable ground. Near the 800 metres "La Rev" had to be steadied
off the heels of "Costa Grande", which was taken in by "Rapid Woman". Near the 200 metres "Costa Grande" shifted in
abruptly under pressure. Race 3 - DST INTERNATIONAL GIBSON CARMICHAEL
STAKES - 1600 metres: "Da Capo", which was kicked by another runner at
the barrier, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. "Juggle" jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and
then became unbalanced. Near the 1400 metres "Magic Bird" had to be
checked when tightened for room by "Work of Heart", which initially had a
tendency to shift in away from "Da Capo" (R. Cartwright) before being taken in
by that gelding, which continued to then shift in, resulting in "Work of Heart"
having to be checked. "Sanguinity", which was following "Magic Bird",
had to be checked, and then raced ungenerously for some distance. After taking into
account all the circumstances the Steward severely reprimanded R. Cartwright, and notified
him that he must ensure that he is clear of other runners when shifting ground at all
times. Near the 900 metres "Da Capo" had to be checked
when tightened for room by "Work of Heart" (G. Eades), which shifted in when not
sufficiently clear before being straightened. Eades was severely reprimanded, and notified
to exercise far more care when shifting ground in future. Near the 300 metres "Dextrous", which had
difficulty obtaining a run, shifted out and made contact with "Sanguinity". Near the 200 metres "Fraar Side" was taken in,
and then had to be eased off the heels of "Dextrous", which shifted in. Race 4 - SECURE INVESTMENTS F.I.B. LADY
MAYORESS' PLATE - 2500 metres: On the way to the barrier "Dolphin Way" dislodged
its rider, and galloped a short distance. "Dolphin Way" was examined by the
Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. As a result of this incident the start of
the race was delayed. "Party Boy" jumped away awkwardly, unbalancing
its rider, A. Findlay. Running to the 800 metres "The A Train (NZ)"
(Vincent Hall) shifted out and attempted to take a run between "Dolphin Way",
which improved on his outside, and "Maranello" where there was insufficient
room. This resulted in "The A Train (NZ)" and "Dolphin Way" being
hampered and becoming unbalanced. The Stewards reprimanded Vincent Hall, and notified him
that he must ensure that he has sufficient room when attempting runs in future. Turning out of the straight "Dolphin Way" got its
head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance when being restrained. Race 5 - CITY OF MELBOURNE LORD MAYOR'S CUP -
1700 metres: At the entrance to the straight "Consular"
obtained a narrow run on the inside of "As you Would (NZ)". "Consular"
was then tightened for room when "As you Would (NZ)" shifted in. The Stewards
have adjourned an inquiry into "Consular" being tightened shortly thereafter,
and into A. Findlay's use of the whip at that point to a date to be fixed. R. Wheeler, rider of "Prince Benbara", stated
that the gelding travelled well at the rear of the field in the early stages, but then
failed to respond to his riding rounding the home turn and in the straight. A veterinary
examination of "Prince Benbara" failed to reveal any abnormality. Race 6 - E. L. & C. BAILLIEU HANDICAP -
1400 metres: No report. Race 7 - WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS TOTAL
PRINT HANDICAP - 1200 metres: "Centre Fire" jumped away awkwardly, which
resulted in Brad Pengelly becoming unbalanced, and losing the use of his near-side iron
        for a short distance. Race 8 - ESANDA INVESTMENTS HANDICAP - 2000
metres: Shortly after the start 'Malakhov" was hampered when
tightened for room between "Platilla", which shifted out, and
"Transferral", which was taken in by "Rodrigo". Rounding the home turn "Our Starway (NZ)" was
held up for a run behind "Young Maverick", which was weakening. In the early part of the straight "Mowgreen (NZ)"
had to change course to obtain a clear run. Near the 200 metres "Mowgreen (NZ)" was hampered
when tightened for room between "Bidaily", which initially shifted out, and
"Crazy Date" (N. Wilson), which shifted in. N. Wilson was notified that he must
exercise more care when shifting ground in future. Sally Wynne, rider of "Bidaily", explained to the
Stewards that she had been instructed to ride the gelding just off the pace today, as it
was the first try of "Bidaily" over the 2000 metres, and the connections
believed that it was the horse's best chance of success. Sally Wynne added that, after
taking up a handy position, she was forced further back than she would have liked when
horses from the outside raced forward running to the 1600 metres. Sally Wynne further
added that "Bidaily" then commenced to pull, and hung out, which caused her to
race wide for the majority of the race. SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of
all races today. FINES/EXPLANATIONS: Mr. Dean Lawson, trainer of "Magic Bird' which ran in
the DST International Gibson Carmichael Stakes - Race 3 - was fined $30 for using wrong
colours on the colt. Following the running of Race 4 the Stewards questioned Mr.
Michael Hallal regarding his behaviour as the horses returned to scale. The Stewards
informed Mr. Hallal that his language was unacceptable, and that they would not condone
him or any other race patron using similar language. Mr. Hallal was also notified that a
report regarding his behaviour would be forwarded to Racing Victoria. Mr. Hallal was escorted from the course by Mr. Peter
        McMillan, Racecourse Detective. |
