Flemington (VIC) - Sunday 17 February 2002
Track: DEAD (altered to GOOD at 11.20 am)
Weather: FINE
Rail: (Inside): out 8 metres entire circuit; (Outside): true

Race 1 - SUPER VOBIS VIEW HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

Acting on a report from the Starter regarding the unruly behaviour of La Quinta Gold when being placed in its stall, the Stewards questioned Mr Chris Gibbs, Foreman for Mr Graeme Rogerson, trainer of La Quinta Gold, and notified Mr Gibbs that La Quinta Gold is now suspended from racing until it performs to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial, at which time it must obtain a barrier test certificate. Action had been taken against La Quinta Gold for unruly behaviour at the barrier previously. As a result, the start of the race was delayed.

Shortly after the start, Well Toned, which was racing greenly, was inconvenienced by Sea of Faith (NZ) which when laying in, shifted in.

Centella, which missed the start slightly, knuckled shortly after the start, and lost ground.

Near the 800 metres, Well Toned had to be checked when tightened for room between Sea of Faith, which shifted in slightly away from La Quinta Gold, which was hanging in, and Fuji Dancer (G Boss), which shifted out. G Boss was notified to ensure he is clear of other runners when shifting ground in future.

In the early and middle stages of the race, La Quinta Gold hung in.

Near the 400 metres, Rory's Babe, which was laying in, became unbalanced when tightened by Royal Enclosure (NZ).

Near the 200 metres, Fearless Angel, which was taken in slightly by Rory's Babe, which continued to lay in, had to be checked over the heels of La Quinta Gold, which shifted out slightly under pressure.

Race 2 - PIPING LANE HANDICAP - 2537 metres:

Ottoman was held up for a race behind Varsilayos and Silk Shamrock from the entrance to the straight until approaching the 200 metres.

Race 3 - RIVERSIDE HANDICAP - 1410 metres:

Manang (NZ) was slow to begin.

Approaching the winning post, La Supremo was inconvenienced when tightened slightly between Casa Mia and Night's Upon Us, which was laying in.

S Seamer, rider of Zacushla (NZ), which performed below expectations, stated that the mare did not feel comfortable at any stage of the race and had a tendency to lay out. Seamer added that she fell short in her action on pulling up. Mr Peter Moody, trainer of Zacushla (NZ), stated that following today's performance it was the connection's intentions to retire the mare. The Stewards notified Mr Moody that in the event of Zacushla (NZ) racing again, he must produce a veterinary certificate for the mare. A subsequent veterinary examination of Zacushla (NZ) revealed it was lame in both forelegs.

Race 4 - CADBURY DAIRY MILK HANDICAP- 1410 metres:

Acting on a confirmed phone call from Mr Reg Fleming, Foreman for Mr Bart Cummings, who stated that the filly was found to be suffering from colic and was unfit to run, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Pure Grace at 8.30 am. Mr Fleming will submit a veterinary certificate in respect of it.

Acting on a report from the Starter regarding the unruly behaviour of Titanic Rose when being placed in the stalls, the Stewards notified Mr Tom Hughes Junior, trainer of Titanic Rose, that the filly is now suspended from racing until such time as she performs to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial, at which time she must obtain a barrier test certificate. Titanic Rose had been warned for similar behaviour previously. As a result of this, the start of the race was delayed.

Miss La La had a tendency to lay out under pressure in the straight.

Race 5 - CADBURY GUINEAS - 1600 metres:

At the entrance to the straight, Gordo shifted out to improve his position and took Tarcoola Midnight out on to Pentastic and Royal Code, resulting in those horses being inconvenienced.

Shortly after this incident, G Boss, rider of Royal Code, dropped his whip.

Near the 100 metres, All Courage was inconvenienced by Ustinov, which shifted in to avoid the heels of Dash For Cash, which shifted out under pressure.

Prince of War hung out rounding the home turn.

Race 6 - CADBURY FAVOURITES HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

Prior to the start, Bonnie Prince was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run.

Race 7 - FLEMINGTON GRANDSTAND HANDICAP - 1410 metres:

Shortly after the start, Karasi was hampered and became unbalanced when tightened for room between Saboteur and Ruthless Tycoon, which shifted in.

Demontage hung out rounding the home turn. Saboteur, which was making ground, was then unable to obtain a clear run from near the 200 metres.

In the straight, Never Dull hung in under pressure.

When questioned, N Rawiller, rider of Yammer, stated that he took hold of the gelding on jumping away as it was his intention from the outside barrier to cross behind the field to race closer to the rail. Rawiller added he was then inconvenienced shortly after the start when Karasi was checked in front of him, and for this reason he got further back than he had intended. Rawiller added that he then elected to follow the field rather than improve his position running to the home turn as he did not believe it could sustain a long finishing sprint. Rawiller further added that over the concluding stages of the race when making ground he had to change course, and was then blocked for a run to the finishing post. Rawiller stated, after viewing the video, that he should have improved his position on the outside of Fraar Magic after passing the 800 metres. The Stewards reprimanded N Rawiller and notified him that in their opinion he should have made a greater effort to improve his position earlier than he did today, and he would be expected to show far more vigour hands and heels than he did from the 400 metres to the 200 metres.

D Nikolic, rider of the second place-getter, viewed the video before deciding not to lodge an objection against the winner.

Race 8 - GALA SUPREME HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

Limerick Scene was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon at the barrier and passed fit to run.

D Gauci, rider of Dinmont, was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out under pressure in the concluding stages of the race, which resulted in Fillary, which was racing on his outside, being hampered on two occasions approaching the winning post.

Supreme Heights (NZ) had difficulty obtaining a clear run rounding the home turn.

SWAB SAMPLES - routine swab samples were taken from the winners of all races today.
