metres: "Flying Rockette" was slow to begin. Near the 800 metres "Swing a Deal" was hampered
and had to be eased, and "Hello Boys" was hampered when tightened for room by
"Donna Natalia" (D. Oliver), which shifted out. Oliver was reprimanded and
notified to ensure that he is clear of other runners when shifting ground in future. V. Caddy, rider of "Hello Boys", stated to the
Stewards that he had been instructed to ride "Hello Boys" just off the pace as
"Hello Boys" had weakened when leading at its last start. Caddy added that after
being hampered by "Donna Natalia" near the 800 metres he got further out of his
ground than he had intended. Caddy further added that he was inconvenienced on a number of
occasions running to the 200 metres by "Donna Natalia", which was shifting
ground in front of him, and that he was only able to obtain a clear run after switching to
the inside of "Donna Natalia" after passing the 200 metres. A veterinary examination of "Hello Boys" revealed
that the filly had a slower than normal recovery rate. Race 2 - SUPER VOBIS SEQUALO HANDICAP - 1430
metres: Near the 300 metres "Numilla" shifted out away
from "On the Green" and bumped "Summer Envoy". R. Cartwright, rider of "Rocketeer", was
reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in under pressure near the 200 metres when
not sufficiently clear of "Desert Arrow", resulting in that gelding being
hampered. When asked if there was any explanation for "On the
Green" performing below expectations, G. Childs stated that the gelding over-raced in
the early and middle stages of the race and then, when the pace quickened from the home
turn, it failed to respond to his riding, and weakened over the concluding stages. A
veterinary examination revealed that "On the Green" had a slower than normal
recovery rate. On return to scale it was noted that "Zonked" had
lost its near fore plate. Race 3 - WALTZING LILY QUALITY - 1100 metres:
Acting on a confirmed telephone call from a representative
of trainer Danny O'Brien who stated that "Centella" had become cast at the
stables and was unfit to run, and as "Centella" had not arrived on course at the
appointed time, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Centella" at 12.18 p.m.
A veterinary certificate in respect of "Centella" will be forwarded to the Club. In the middle stages of the race "Preferential"
threw its head in the air and raced ungenerously for a short distance. Near the 300 metres "Preferential", which was
laying in, shifted in, accidentally clipped the heels of "Zembu", and almost
fell. Near the 100 metres "Preferential" had to be
eased off the heels of "It's who Deanie", which shifted out under pressure. P.
Mertens, rider of "It's who Deanie", was notified to exercise more care when
shifting ground in future. Race 4 - COLONUS HANDICAP - 2575 metres: Prior to declaring correct weight the Stewards viewed the
patrol video before deciding not to lodge an objection on behalf of the second
placegetter, "Red Rorke". Turning out of the straight "Cavallo Bruno (NZ)",
when being restrained, threw its head in the air on a number of occasions. Approaching the winning post "Farmer News" was
inconvenienced when tightened for room between "Red Rorke", which shifted in
slightly, and "Sunray Mist", which shifted out. "Sunray Mist" continued to shift out in the run
to the winning post, and caused some inconvenience to "Red Rorke". Race 5 - RAISE A GRAND HANDICAP - 1430 metres:
Near the 1100 metres "Prince Standaan" and
"Melody Prince" were both hampered when tightened for room between "What a
Blast", which shifted out slightly, and "No Deposit", which shifted in. Just prior to straightening "General Feelgood"
was hampered when tightened on to "Never Dull" by "Atomic Man", which
shifted out slightly. Running to the winning post "What a Blast", when
making ground, had to be steadied off the heels of "Daneforce". Race 6 - DEMUS HANDICAP - 1000 metres:
On jumping away "Disco Time" shifted out and
hampered "Network News". "Panorama Heights" and "Sir Spur" were
unable to obtain clear runs from the 400 metres. A veterinary examination of "Guthrie" failed to
reveal any abnormality. Race 7 - JOLLY OLD MAC HANDICAP - 1640 metres:
"Game Hunter" was examined by the Club's
Veterinary Surgeon at the barrier, and was found to be lame in the off fore leg. Acting on
veterinary advice the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Game Hunter" at 4.26
p.m. Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered
on "Game Hunter" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to
the time of withdrawal of "Game Hunter" be subject to the following deductions
in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Thirteen cents; Place Bets:
Twelve cents; Winning Concession Bets: Fourteen cents and Doubles Bets: Thirteen cents. All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of
withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of the ticket. Mr. D. L. Freedman, trainer of "Game Hunter", was
notified that prior to the gelding racing again he must produce a veterinary clearance for
it. In the early part of the straight "Obergurgl" had
to be checked when disappointed for a run between "Your Mate" and "Power
and Rhythm (NZ)", which had shifted out slightly. Race 8 - ROSE OF DANEHILL HANDICAP - 1740
metres: Approaching the winning post "La Banca (NZ)",
which was laying out, shifted out under pressure and tightened "Lindoni" on to
the hindquarters of "Palace Archway", resulting in both those horses being
hampered. SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of
        all races today. |
