Gawler (SA) - Wednesday 1 May 2002

Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: True

RACE 1 – TUDOR VALE STUD / SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1200 metres

ROISTER (C. Lever) jumped away awkwardly and inconvenienced MARANICE (T. Creek) and ZIPPA RAJA (G. Dorol).

Racing to the 500 metres MIGHTY BLAZE (S. Cahill) rolled in and as a result REGARDLESS (Darren Holland) had to be eased.

Making the home turn TIONA (J. O’Connor), which had a tendency to hang out, shifted out and as a result REGARDLESS (Darren Holland) had to be checked. J. O’Connor was advised that while TIONA did have a tendency to lay out, he would be expected to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

T. Creek, rider of MARANICE, explained to the Stewards the filly became very awkward in its action from the 600 metes and had a tendency to lay in severely and as a result lost ground. T. Creek further stated that he was unable to ride the filly out due to its reluctance to race and laying in severely. MARANICE was inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon and was found to have some slight heat and swelling in its near side front fetlock joint.

G. Dorol, rider of ZIPPA RAJA, requested to view the official head-on video of the finish of the event. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

RACE 2 – SMART CHOICE MAIDEN PLATE – 1050 metres

The start of this race was delayed several minutes due to CLOSE IMITATION (C. Lever) breaking through the front of the gates. After being restrained CLOSE IMITATION underwent a Veterinary inspection and was declared fit to start. C. Lever was slightly injured in the incident but was declared fit by the Ambulance Attendants to fulfil his engagement.

CLASSIC ARCHWAY (D. Tootell) was slow to begin.

MITOBY (J. Marks) had a tendency to race greenly in the straight and lay in.

Racing to the 50 metres PAGAN GOLD (T. Barras) shifted in and as a result JIVE ANGEL (J. O’Connor), which was weakening, lost ground. T. Barras was advised to stop riding and straighten his mounts in similar circumstances.

C. Lever was inspected by the Club’s Doctor and declared fit to ride for the remainder of the day.

A Veterinary inspection of CLOSE IMITATION, subsequent to the event, revealed that after the filly had broken through the barrier it had suffered minor abrasions to the face and near side point of shoulder.

RACE 3 – SMOKE-FREE 2YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 metres

On jumping away LIBERAL SALLY (J. Maund) and HER HONOUR (D. Tootell) bumped.

Ms. K. McAnulty, Trainer of TRIFALAO, was advised that a repetition of the mare’s poor performance today may lead to the Stewards taking further action in future.

RACE 4 – STANLEY BROTHERS WINERY CLASS 5 HANDICAP – 1400 metres

B. Vale, rider of SLIGO CLASSIC, was fined $50 under ARR 137a for dropping his whip in the vicinity of the 250 metres.

RACE 5 – BOLTONS LAWYERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1400 metres

ANOTHER FARE (S. Cahill) jumped away awkwardly and in doing so shifted in and brushed KARNALI (H. McKechnie).

Racing to the 300 metres KULCURNA (D. Tootell), which had a tendency to lay out, had to be eased to avoid the heels of ANOTHER FARE (S. Cahill), when that mare shifted out to obtain a run.

NIGHT KISS (B. Vale) failed to finish the race. Subsequent to the event the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon performed an endoscopic examination of NIGHT KISS, which revealed the mare was suffering from pharyngitis and an internal lung haemorrhage. Ms. B. Geracitano, Trainer of NIGHT KISS, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for a future event.

RACE 6 – A. J. CRABB EVANSTON SPRINT – 1200 metres

The start of this race was delayed due to ZEDIMBI being difficult to load.

Racing to the 1100 metres SOUPLESSE (NZ) (T. Creek) commenced to over-race and got its head up, and as a result ZEDIMBI (C. Bryant) had to be eased to avoid the heels of that gelding and lost ground.

Racing to the 600 metres ZEDIMBI (C. Bryant) had to be eased to avoid the heels of SOUPLESSE (NZ) (T. Creek).

Racing to the 150 metres VARGNA (K. Louca) laid in and as a result K. Louca stopped riding and straightened his mount and in doing so shifted out and brushed ONYX RIVER (D. Azis).

Approaching the winning post ONYX RIVER (D. Azis) had a tendency to lay in under pressure and inconvenienced VARGNA (K. Louca).

D. Cleaver rider of BRINKLEY LASS, and G. Dorol rider of KURT, which dead-heated, both requested to view the official photo finish of the race. After doing so, in conjunction with Judge and the Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

T. Creek, rider of SOUPLESSE (NZ), explained that after racing ungenerously in the early stages of the race, the gelding was reluctant to take a tight run over the concluding stages and as a result he was unable to ride SOUPLESSE (NZ) out to the finish in his normal manner.

RACE 7 – LANGMEIL WINERY CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 1200 metres

Correct Weight was delayed to allow J. Holder, rider of SEA THE WAY, to view the official video films of the race. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

RACE 8 – CRITERION TAVERN DISTANCE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1950 metres

I’ZINGARI (J. Potter) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 1300 metres KILILIIPI (Darren Holland) had a tendency to lay in and as a result inconvenienced DEMONDO (J. Maund).

Racing to the 400 metres COMO PRINCE (T. Creek) shifted out to obtain a clear run and in doing so DEFY SMYTZER (NZ) (S. Price), which was weakening, had to be steadied to avoid that gelding’s heels. T. Creek was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Racing to the 300 metres DEMONDO (J. Maund) rolled off the fence momentarily, resulting in ENHANCER (S. Cahill) attempting to take a run to the inside of that gelding. As a result of DEMONDO rolling back, S. Cahill (ENHANCER) was disappointed for a run and had to steady his mount for several strides.

Subsequent to the race Veterinary inspections of DEFY SMYTZER (NZ) revealed the filly was tied up behind and CACCIANI (NZ) was suffering slight lameness in the near fore leg and respiratory distress.
