Track: Dead
Weather: Overcast
Rail: True

RACE 1 – SMARTCHOICE MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division) – 1050 metres

TAOH (J. Maund) was slow to begin.

When the gates were released GREG (J. Potter) shifted in, inconveniencing SEACOAL LANE (W. Kerford), which was further hampered due to JIVE ANGEL (A. Stead) being taken out by ALLUDING (D. Carney).

Racing to the 800 metres PHOEBE’S WAY (D. Tootell) shifted in, resulting in GREG (J. Potter) shifting away from that gelding and hampering SEACOAL LANE (W. Kerford), which in turn inconvenienced TAOH (J. Maund), which was very green. D. Tootell was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Racing to the 700 metres JIVE ANGEL (A. Stead) hung out and as a result lost ground.

Racing to the 400 metres SEACOAL LANE (W. Kerford) had to be eased to avoid the heels of GREG (J. Potter), when that gelding rolled in.

Racing to the 100 metres GREG (J. Potter), which had a tendency to race greenly, shifted in and inconvenienced SEACOAL LANE (W. Kerford). GREG continued to race greenly to the finish of the race.

D. Tootell, rider of PHOEBE’S WAY, reported the filly returned to the Mounting Yard without the tongue tie as part of its gear. Post race inspection of PHOEBE’S WAY by the Veterinary Surgeon reported the filly was suffering from a soft palate problem, which would have been aggravated by losing its tongue tie.

RACE 2 – CARLTON DRAUGHT MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division) – 1050 metres

Mr. John Barns, Trainer of SPAR, was asked if he could offer any explanation into the improved performance of the gelding today. Mr. Barns explained that it was SPAR’S first start for him and he had applied for and taken blinkers off the gelding. Mr. Barns further stated that SPAR had trialed recently very well and he had expected it to run a very forward race first up. Stewards noted the explanation tendered by Mr. Barns.

RACE 3 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY SABIS 2YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1400 metres

CECIL RED (J. O’Connor) and UTTER MAGIC (N. Tomizawa) were slow to begin.

Prior to entering the Mounting Enclosure it was discovered by a TRSA Official that MISTER DISCREET (NZ) had been incorrectly saddled, in that the lead bag which Ben Claridge had weighed out with had not been included in the horse’s saddling. On inquiry it was established that Mr. T. Dansie, representing Trainer Mr. K. Sweeney, had inadvertently left the lead bag off the gear of MR. DISCREET (NZ). Mr. T. Dansie was charged under ARR 140A with negligence in saddling MR. DISCREET (NZ) and fined $250.

WILL SOAR suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the running of the race. Mr. S. Moore, Trainer of WILL SOAR, was advised the gelding was now banned for three months in accordance with ARR 53A.

Racing to the 500 metres SOUTHERN RENEGADE (M. Neilson) shifted out to take a run to the outside of MISTER DISCREET (NZ) (B. Claridge), where in the opinion the Stewards there was insufficient room. As a result, SOUTHERN RENEGADE contacted and shifted REAL SHANTY (D. Carney) out onto DORADOS (P. Gatt), resulting in those two horses making contact. Shortly after this incident DORADOS rolled in slightly, resulting in REAL SHANTY shifting in, causing SOUTHERN RENEGADE to also shift in and as a result NOISY PROSPECT (N. Tomizawa) was checked. M. Neilson was severely reprimanded and reminded of his obligations with respect to making sure there is sufficient room when attempting to improve his position in future.
