This meeting was a Balaklava Racing Club meeting transferred from Balaklava after that meeting was potponed on Wednesday 17 April 2002.

RACE 1 – TROJAN WORKFORCE RECRUITMENT MAIDEN PLATE 1200 metres

YUSRA (P. Gatt) reared on jumping away.

CHEVALAE (D. Carney) reared on jumping away and shifted out, making contact with COUNTER CAPERS (J. Holder), which resulted in CHEVALAE becoming severely unbalanced.

Inside the 400 metres YUSRA (P. Gatt) lost its position whilst attempting a tight run inside MILITIARA (Darren Holland), which had commenced tire, and CHEVALAE (D. Carney), which was taken out by OCHEROUS (J. Maund).

MILITIARA was eased out of the event in the vicinity of the 200 metres when its rider, Darren Holland, became aware of it appearing lame. MILITIARA was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Mr. C. Bromley gave Stewards an undertaking to report any lameness, which became apparent in the stable.

G. Dorol reported to Stewards that he believed CABLE GOLD might have been short in its action in front over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination of CABLE GOLD revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore fetlock and in the off side lower back. Mr. B. Rouge-Serret, representing Mr. J.T. Hall, the trainer of the gelding, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for a future event.

CHEVALAE lost its off plate during the event.

RACE 2 – SKY CHANNEL/SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD SPECIAL CONDITIONS HANDICAP 1050 metres

MR JAZZ MAN (W. Kerford) stood in the gates and missed the start.

DISTINCT RUBY (D. Carney) was slow to jump.

Approaching the 600 metres COGNAC FANTASY (P. Gatt) was obliged to steady off the heels of MISTY SHAMROCK (C. Lindop) and lose its position, as MISTY SHAMROCK was obliged to stead when taken in by MR WATERMARK (Darren Holland). Darren Holland was reminded of his obligations.

COGNAC FANTASY was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon subsequent to the race and found to have a suspect front leg action.

RACE 3 – YALUMBA 2YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE 1600 metres

SMYTZER’S TARO (W. Kerford) and PHANTASMIC (C. Lever) were slow to jump.

Approaching the 1100 metres DATAI (Darren Holland) was obliged to steady away from the heels of SMYTZER’S LEADER (G. Dorol), which shifted in tightening DATAI onto MR. JUNEE (D. Carney). D. Carney reported that MR. JUNEE resented the tightening and raced ungenerously for a short distance.

Near the 1000 metres BRIGHT BEAD (S. Price), which had commenced to race keenly, struck the heels of ROSEWIN (C. Lindop), which shifted out whilst being restrained, resulting in S. Price becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

SMYTZER’S TARO (W. Kerford) was held up for a short distance at the entrance to the straight.

T. Creek, the rider of FLY FOR ME, reported that filly had felt sore throughout the event.

PHANTASMIC, which performed below expectations, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and found to be lame in the near foreleg.

RACE 4 – JASOL CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1400 metres

WE DARE (C. Lindop) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres BELLTON (T. Creek) was obliged to steady when tightened by WE DARE (C. Lindop), which, whilst being restrained, shifted out at the same time as GERTRUDE JEKYL (D. Tootell) rolled in.

GERTRUDE JEKYL (D. Tootell) hung out from in the vicinity of the 500 metres. This observation was confirmed by D. Tootell and subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of GERTRUDE JEKYL revealed no visible abnormalities.

Inside the 400 metres BLEVEEN (J. Marks) steadied and shifted to the inside, after being taken out by WE DARE (C. Lindop).

RACE 5 – ARISTOCRAT CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1400 metres

No report.

RACE 6 – AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCATION COUNTRY CUP (Class 2) 2200 metres

GOLD TRIO was withdrawn by Stewards at 9.00 am acting on advice from the trainer that the mare had contested a race the previous day.

SEEK THE GOLD (A. Stead) missed the start.

On jumping away SIMULATE (P. Gatt) was inconvenienced when tightened by KILILIPI (Darren Holland), which jumped inwards at the same time as VELVET LAKE (T. Barras) jumped out.

D. Carney, the rider of TASTE THE MAGIC, was questioned regarding statements made by him on return to the enclosure. D. Carney was found guilty of a charge of misconduct under ARR 83 and fined $400.

RACE 7 – COOPERS / SABIS FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 metres

Shortly after the start TWIGGY SUMMIT (J. Lyon) was inconvenienced when tightened by OUR LAZE (D. Carney), which had been taken in by EL VANA (J. Maund).

In the vicinity of the 600 metres LITTLE MISS LINA (J. Potter) lost its position when tightened by OUR LAZE (D. Carney), which was inclined to lay away when taken in slightly by TWIGGY SUMMIT (J. Lyon). J. Lyon was advised to take greater care when shifting ground in future.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of OIL CAN ANNIE, which had performed below expectations, revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 8 – WOODSTOCK / SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1400 metres

ANTONOVA, which had sustained a laceration under the off side eye after being loaded, was withdrawn by Stewards at 5.02 pm, acting on veterinary advice that the filly was unfit to start.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on ANTONOVA be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 9 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 10 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

DANCING LIGHTS (T. Creek) jumped away awkwardly.

BUTTON COUNTER (S. Price) was inclined to race ungenerously for a short distance in the vicinity of the 1000 metres.
