Gawler (SA) - Wednesday 20 February 2002

Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: True

RACE 1 – OAKBANK RACING CLUB HURDLE

RHYTHM ROYALE (NZ) (R. McKenna) was slow to jump.

On jumping the obstacle near the 1800 metres STAR GAMES (W. Harnett) was inconvenienced by WINSOME WILLY (J. Wallace), which shifted out.

S. Pateman, the rider of LANCE CORPORAL, when questioned regarding an apparent lack of vigour on that gelding between the 600 and 300 metres, stated that he was mindful that LANCE CORPORAL was having its first start in a hurdle race and had been lightly raced during this preparation. He added that in the vicinity of the 400 metres he felt confident that he was racing close enough to the eventual winner and was mindful of conserving his mount in order for it to remain confident when attempting the final hurdle. S. Pateman admitted, in hindsight, that he may have erred in not having applied some pressure to the eventual winner inside the 400 metres. After considering this explanation, and taking into account S. Pateman’s relative inexperience, he was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances in future he would be expected to show more vigour and initiative.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of STAR GAMES revealed no visible abnormality.

RACE 2 – LIFESTYLE PERGOLAS & TIMBER SUPPLIES/SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE

On jumping away TOPAVIC (C. Buchiw) shifted in tightening DODGER (S. Price) onto DIVER DAVE (C. Lever).

Near the 800 metres DIVER DAVE (C. Lever) was obliged to steady away from the heels of AVID STAR (P. Gatt), which shifted in.

Shortly after, AVID STAR (P. Gatt) was eased out of the event. P. Gatt reported that he became concerned with the filly’s action.

Making the turn off the back straight, ALI OPAL (Darren Holland), which had been inclined to lay out, commenced to hang out and continued to hang out for the remainder of the event.

Subsequent to the event a veterinary inspection of ALI OPAL failed to reveal any visible abnormalities. Mr. J. Lockyer, the Trainer of ALI OPAL, was advised that a repetition of that filly’s manners may lead to action being taken against it.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of AVID STAR revealed that filly had sustained lacerations to both hind coronets and displayed evidence of having struck its off fore cannon.

RACE 3 – SMOKE-FREE MAIDEN PLATE (Division 1)

The start of this race was delayed owing to the tongue tie having to be replaced on SHUTAYR.

Immediately prior to entering the straight, CLASSICALMA (B. Vale) contacted the running rail.

Inside the 100 metres J. Bowditch, the rider of SINGING CREEK, dropped his near side rein.

SAVILLE’S ANGUISH lost its near hind plate during the race.

T. Creek, the rider of SAVILLE’S ANGUISH, explained that he had elected to ride SAVILLE’S ANGUISH back in the field due to its wide barrier, however, in the vicinity of the 600 metres he had been off the bit in attempting to improve around runners immediately in front of his mount. He added that SAVILLE’S ANGUISH had never travelled and, in his opinion, had raced like a tired horse.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of SAVILLE’S ANGUISH revealed signs that the filly had jarred up in both front fetlocks.

RACE 4 – ROBOT PRINTING CLASS 3 HANDICAP

On jumping away VAYA CON DIABLO (B. Vale) shifted in and inconvenienced THE NOB (S. Price) and EXTRA SPESH (J. Maund).

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of COMIC JEWEL revealed that filly to be lame in the near fore knee. Mr. M. Minervini, the Trainer of COMIC JEWEL, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to the filly accepting for a future event.

RACE 5 – CENTRAL DISTRICT F C GRAND CENTRAL DISTANCE CLASS 1 HANDICAP

Near the 500 metres THE JIBSTER (B. Claridge), which had commenced to weaken, was obliged to steady to avoid the heels of SAHALO (J. Maund), which shifted out. In consequence KILILIPI (M. Hoppo), which was trailing THE JIBSTER, was obliged to steady.

Inside the 200 metres BOWOOD ROAD (C. Bryant) was forced to steady when competing for a run with KILILIPI (M. Hoppo), which shifted in.

C. Lever, the rider of SAUVIGNON HILL, reported that he had eased his mount out of the event shortly after entering the straight as he was of the opinion there was something amiss with the gelding. Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of SAUVIGNON HILL revealed no visible abnormalities. An endoscopic examination of SAUVIGNON HILL revealed the gelding was exhibiting signs of upper respiratory impairment.

Subsequent to the race an endoscopic examination of THE JIBSTER revealed the gelding had suffered a haemorrhage in the lungs during the event. Mr. G.D. Kennewell, the Trainer of THE JIBSTER, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to the gelding accepting for a future event.

RACE 6 – THE SOUTHERN HOTEL, GAWLER/SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP

The start of this event owing to COMPENDIUM and ESQUILAX proving difficult to load. Subsequently ESQUILAX, which had been restless in the barriers, became cast.

ESQUILAX was withdrawn at 3.09 pm by Stewards acting on veterinary advice. Stewards ruled that all monies invested on ESQUILAX be refunded. Bets made prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 2 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 2 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

BLUE BROCCO (C. Buchiw), which was in an adjoining stall to ESQUILAX, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start.

Mr. D. Pannell, representing Mr. J.R. Hawkes, the Trainer of COMPENDIUM, was advised that similar behaviour in future would lead to action being taken against the gelding.

SADLER JOH (J. Bowditch) was slow to jump.

On jumping away BLUE BROCCO (C. Buchiw) knuckled.

ICE ON MARS (D. Tootell) shifted in on jumping away taking DANCING LIGHTS (B. Vale) in onto KOODA SHINE (D. Carney), which was tightened and lost its position.

In the vicinity of the 700 metres MERRIMAK (T. Creek) got its head up and shifted in whilst being steadied off the heels of WYNDAM WARRIOR (S. Price), which shifted in.

Inside the 400 metres COMPENDIUM (W. Kerford), which was inclined to lay in, was taken in by MERRIMAK (T. Creek), which shifted in. As a result COMPENDIUM tightened SADLER JOH (J. Bowditch) resulting in that gelding having to check.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres FONNIX (P. Gatt) was disappointed when attempting to improve inside ARGENT LANE (D. O’Heare), which rolled in. Shortly after FONNIX was inconvenienced when attempting to improve to the outside of ARGENT LANE, which was inclined to roll about under pressure.

Inside the 100 metres FONNIX (P. Gatt), in attempting a tight run between ALENKO (J. Holder) and ARGENT LANE (D. O’Heare), shifted out and contacted ALENKO resulting in that filly’s hindquarters being turned.

Correct weight for this event was delayed to allow P. Gatt, the rider of the second placegetter FONNIX, to view the official footage in the straight.

D. Tootell, the rider of ICE ON MARS, reported that gelding was reluctant to race and in the vicinity of the 700 metres he elected to allow his mount to roll to the outside of runners in an endeavour to have the gelding respond to his riding. D. Tootell added that prior to the entrance to the straight, he had formed a view that his mount had resented racing and did not persist thereafter in riding it. Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of ICE ON MARS revealed the gelding was lame in the off foreleg.

RACE 7 – GAWLER TAXI & HIRE CARS SERVICE CLASS 1 HANDICAP

TYPHOON DOLLY (T. Creek) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres MISS BALHANNAH (M. Neilson), which was inclined to lay out, continued to shift out and away from other runners for the remainder of the race.

Approaching the finish THE BARON (B. Vale) was tightened when attempting a run between NATALAMI (C. Lindop), which shifted in under pressure, and ATHINOULA (J. Maund), which rolled out.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of HELLO HELLO revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 8 – GAWLER’S OLD SPOT HOTEL CLASS 2 HANDICAP

S. Price was questioned with regards to his being declared for both LITTLE MISS LINA and SIMULATE in this event. After considering explanations tendered by S. Price, Stewards determined he should ride SIMULATE and he was fined $100 for being doubly engaged.

Approaching the 600 metres BLEVENCIA (M. Hoppo) was forced to steady when tightened by SIR TANJIL (T. Creek), which had been taken in by A CHORUS LINE (C. Lindop). C. Lindop was severely reprimanded and advised in future to give riders on her inside the room to which they are entitled.

Approaching the finish FRENCH REVOLUTION (W. Kerford) shifted in and tightened SIR TANJIL (T. Creek), which was obliged to check and lost its position. W. Kerford was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 9 – DALTON FINE PAPER MAIDEN PLATE (Division 2)

After arriving at the gates GOLD FOX dislodged its rider, Darren Holland, and returned to the mounting enclosure. Acting on veterinary advice that the gelding was not fit to start, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of GOLD FOX at 4.59 pm. Stewards ruled that all monies invested on GOLD FOX be refunded. There were no deductions to betting.

Mr. B. Leverink, the Trainer of GOLD FOX, was advised that similar behaviour in future would lead to action being taken against the gelding.

The start of the event was further delayed owing to PEARLY MAE becoming cast in the barriers after being loaded. PEARLY MAE was subsequently inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled unfit to start. PEARLY MAE was withdrawn by Stewards at 5.02 pm acting on that veterinary advice. Stewards ruled that all monies invested on PEARLY MAE be refunded. Bets made prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 19 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 16 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.
