1300 metres: In the early part of the race "Discard" raced
ungenerously. Near the 700 metres "Amalthea" had to be eased
off the heels of "Split Timing". As a result "Exaggerate (NZ)", which
was following, was hampered in consequence. Approaching the home turn "Cedar Lodge" was held
up when unable to obtain a clear run. In the early part of the straight "Amalthea" had
difficulty obtaining a clear run. Race 2 - ACE HYGIENE MAIDEN PLATE - 1500
metres: Approaching the 100 metres R. McLeod, rider of
"Dolphin Way", lost the use of his near-side rein. M. Allen, rider of "Dynatos (NZ)" which performed
below expectations, stated to the Stewards that the gelding hung out for the majority of
the race, and did not respond to his riding in the straight. A veterinary examination of
"Dynatos (NZ)" subsequent to the event failed to reveal any abnormality. Race 3 - ELSWORTHY'S BULK STORE CLASS 1
HANDICAP - 1300 metres: After being placed in the barrier "Are you
Serious" broke through the front gates and cantered a short distance. The filly was
examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon, and passed fit to run. Near the 800 metres "Rustic Royal" had to be
eased off the heels of "Classic Jewel", which shifted out. The Stewards questioned Z. Purton, rider of "Eleganz
(NZ)", and Mr. D. Garland, who was representing Mr. R. Smerdon, trainer of the
gelding, regarding the horse's improved performance today, As the Stewards wished to take
evidence from Mr. R. Smerdon who was not present today, the inquiry was adjourned to a
date to be fixed. Race 4 - HOLDEN SUMMER CUP - 1500 metres:
On jumping away "Sharp Lord" knuckled. Race 5 - SCHWEPPES SUPER VOBIS THREE-YEARS-OLD
FILLIES CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Acting on a confirmed telephone call from Mr. M. Watson,
who was representing Mr. Bart Cummings, trainer of "Pure Grace", who stated that
the filly had an elevated temperature and was unfit to run, the Stewards ordered the
withdrawal of "Pure Grace" at 10.10 a.m. Mr. Cummings has produced a veterinary
certificate in respect of the filly. An amended stable return was received for "Tassie's
Regret", showing Once a Pointee Syndicate, Manager M. McKinnon, Mr. D. Monson, Mr. G.
Caulfield, Mrs. C. L. Gibbs, Mr. A. Smith, Mr. E. Johnstone, Mr. J.O'Malley, Mr. C.
Jeffrey and Mrs. J. Edwards as nominators of the filly. On arrival at the course Mr. J. Edwards, trainer of
"Tassie's Regret", reported that the filly had a small amount of blood in one
nostril. "Tassie's Regret" was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon prior
to entering the mounting yard, and again on arrival at the barriers and passed fit to run. On arrival at the barrier "Miss Charlemagne
(NZ)", which had struck the outside running rail, was examined by the Club's
Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. "Berlinetta" was slow to begin, and was then
hampered when tightened for room between "Tassie's Regret" and "Miss
Charlemagne (NZ)" due to both horses shifting ground. Near the 900 metres "Add Silk", which was
over-racing, had to be eased off the heels of "Miss Charlemagne (NZ)". Race 6 - WORKSAFE VICTORIA CLASS 4

abruptly and hampered "Palace Archway". Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the
straight "Monde Trist" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run. G. Childs, rider of "Broken Love" which had
performed below expectations, stated to the Stewards that the mare never travelled well,
and failed to respond to his riding rounding the home turn and in the straight. G. Childs
further stated that "Broken Love" had made an abnormal respiratory noise on
pulling up. A Veterinary examination of the mare subsequent to the race failed to reveal
