Kembla Grange (NSW) - Saturday 15 December 2001
Weather: Overcast
Track: Good

RACE 1: NRMA Handicap (3yo Colts & Geldings Maiden) 1200m

As App. C. Wearne was unable to claim his full allowance Stewards permitted App. L. Price to be substituted as the rider of Kenny’s Kick. App. Wearne was fined $100 (LR70).

Shahjabeen jumped awkwardly resulting in its rider C. Rixon becoming badly unbalanced.

Kenny’s Kick and Le Turk were slow to begin.

Near the 900m Shahjabeen had to be steadied off the heels of Suave Pekan (J. Grisedale), which, after initially being inclined to lay in, shifted in and away from Teeth.

RACE 2: One-Steel Handicap (3yo Fillies Maiden) 1200m

Smooth Moves was bumped at the start between Laser Belle and Escaline.

Timelock was slow to begin.

Approaching the 600m Smooth Moves was continuously tightened for room between Escaline and Laser Belle (App. B. Timmis), which shifted in. App. Timmis was advised to exercise care when shifting ground.

When questioned regarding his riding on Refinement in the early stages, T. Phillips stated that his instructions were to allow the filly, which was resuming today, from its wide barrier to settle towards the rear of the field rather than risk going forward and being caught wide.

He stated that Refinement then travelled well in the race and near the 600m he elected to improve to the inside of Timelock when that filly shifted off the fence.

However, when Timelock shifted back in Refinement was disappointed and had to be steadied for some distance.

T. Phillips added that when Refinement was placed under pressure in the straight the filly ran home fairly.

T. Phillips was advised that whilst he had ridden to instructions he nevertheless would be expected to put his mounts into the race at an appropriate stage so as to leave no room for query.

RACE 3: John Paul Village Handicap (Fillies & Mares Maiden) 1400m

Fete Champetre was a late scratching at 12.18pm on veterinary advice after the filly injured itself en route to the track.

Impetrate was slow to begin.

Approaching the first turn Friday Sweets, which was racing fiercely, shifted out and contacted Woodland taking that horse wider.

When questioned, T. Phillips stated that soon after the start Doona felt awkward in its action and as he believed there was something amiss with the filly he therefore retired Doona from the event near the 700m.

A post-race veterinary examination of Doona and a further veterinary examination after the filly had cooled down revealed no abnormality.

Trainer Mrs D. Slinkard was advised that Doona would have to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before its next race start.

RACE 4: Wadsworth Joinery Handicap (Entires & Geldings Maiden) 1400m

Shortly after the start Direidi was crowded for room between Intensity and What A Skite, which shifted in.

Approaching the first turn What A Skite had to be steadied off the heels of Zulu Legend, which in turn a short distance later commenced to overrace and had to be checked off the heels of Night Thunder.

In this incident What A Skite, which was following Zulu Legend, had to be checked in consequence and shifted out.

Approaching the 200m Direidi commenced to shift out abruptly under pressure.

The Stewards brought the racing manners of Direidi to the attention of stable foreman Mr G. Blanche, representing trainer Ms K. Moore.

When questioned, C. Agnew stated that Night Thunder, which was having its second race start today, was inclined to race greenly in the early stages, then leaving the 1000m shifted out slightly and near the 800m ducked out hampering Ginger Red and Still Wanted.

C. Agnew further stated that leaving the 600m Zulu Legend had improved to his inside and he was then unable to shift back to the fence.

RACE 5: A. K. Boyall Pty Ltd Handicap (Open) 1600m

Top Shot had to be steadied off the heels of Festive Knight.

RACE 6: R. & E. Goodfellow Pty Ltd Handicap (Class 1) 1200m

Play Back jumped awkwardly and hampered Tactica and Confiding.

Just Yal was slow to begin.

On straightening Danny Dancer was disappointed for a run to the inside of Tactica and had to be shifted out across the heels of that gelding to obtain clear running and in doing so bumped Go For The Gold.

RACE 7: Lakeline Butchery Plate (Provincial Class 1) 1600m

Beautiful Dreams was a late withdrawal at 3.21pm on veterinary advice after the mare reared over in the hosing dock.

In The Bag was slow to begin and then was inclined to overrace in the middle stages.

When questioned regarding the tactics on Shagemon, A. G. Robinson stated that from the wide barrier his instructions were to have the gelding, which was stepping up in distance to the 1600m, in a position where comfortable.

A. Robinson added that he was unhappy with the pace in the middle stages and, therefore, near the 800m he elected to improve his position in an endeavour to trail the eventual winner, In The Bag, but was trapped wide from that point.

Trainer Mr C. Conners confirmed that the instructions were not expressly to lead on Shagemon but to ride the gelding quietly off the pace.

RACE 8: BHP Welded Products Plate (Provincial Class 3) 1300m

Sophistocat was slow to begin.

Oak Ridge Lass jumped awkwardly.

Ghostline was held up for some distance until near the 300m.
