Morphettville (SA) - Saturday 20 April 2002

Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: Out 12 metres entire circumference (except back straight approx 1300-1700 metres out 10 metres)

RACE 1 : SCHWEPPES DASH FOR CASH 1050 metres

COURT HERO (NZ) (S. Arnold) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 400 metres CHEERS POP (D. Tootell), which had commenced to improve, was forced to steady off the heels of PICK OF THE CROP (P. Gatt) momentarily.

Inside the 200 metres TOVA (G. Childs) was obliged to steady off the heels of WISP (G. Dorol), which shifted away from BROTHER’S JEST (D. Oliver), on its inside.

RACE 2 : CLAY & MINERAL/HAYDONS HANDICAP 2055 metres

At the entrance to the straight YOU’RE JOKING (T. Creek) shifted out marginally onto DONEGAL BOY (T. Barras), which shifted out onto PIERMONT (NZ) (S. Arnold), which was inconvenienced momentarily, resulting in SOAKING (M. Hoppo), which was racing immediately behind PIERMONT (NZ), clipping that gelding’s heels and falling. SOAKING suffered a fractured near hind tibia as a result of the fall.

JESTER’S EDGE suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the event. Mr. L. Macdonald, the trainer of JESTER’S EDGE, was advised that the gelding was now suspended from racing for a period of three months in accordance with ARR 53A.

Subsequent to the race PIERMONT (NZ) was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities but that the gelding did have a lower than expected heart rate.

RACE 3 : THE YELLOW CAB GROUP PLATE 1200 metres

TROLL was inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon at the barriers and ruled fit to start.

PRICKLY (D. Gauci) was slow to jump and then slow into stride.

NEPTUNE ISLAND (C. Lindop) jumped away awkwardly.

FIRENZA (D. Oliver) was held up approaching the entrance to the straight and was then unable to obtain clear ground until in the vicinity of the 100 metres.

C. Lever, the rider of TROLL, reported that gelding hung out throughout the event. Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of TROLL revealed no visible abnormalities.

LAWSON’S STORM (W. Kerford) raced very greenly in the early stages of the race.

RACE 4 : TORO IRRIGATION HANDICAP 1200 metres

On jumping away LEISEL WEASEL (P. Carbery) shifted in onto CLASSIC STATUS (J. Holder) taking that filly in onto PRINCE RAJA (G. Dorol), which was tightened onto BOY’S TALK (D. Oliver), resulting in PRINCE RAJA losing its position.

In the vicinity of the 1000 metres RAINBOW GLYDER (K. McEvoy) raced fiercely for a short distance and had to be steadied off the heels of CLASSIC STATUS (J. Holder) when tightened by that filly shifting in and PRINCE RAJA (G. Dorol) rolling out.

Racing to the 800 metres RAINBOW GLYDER (K. McEvoy) shifted out and brushed GIRONDE (W. Kerford), which was obliged to race wider as a result.

W. Kerford, the rider of GIRONDE, explained that he had been disappointed with that gelding’s performance. He felt that the horse had never travelled as keenly as it had in previous starts when he had ridden it. He stated that he was looking to race closer to the rail approaching the 800 metres, however, was obliged to travel wide after receiving contact from RAINBOW GLYDER (K. McEvoy). W. Kerford added that, when placed under pressure in the straight, GIRONDE had not responded. Subsequent to the race GIRONDE was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

G. Dorol, who dismounted from PRINCE RAJA after the event, was examined by the Club’s Surgeon, who advised he would assess the rider’s condition later in the afternoon.

RACE 5 : LAKEWOOD STUD STAKES 1800 metres

In the vicinity of the 1300 metres GORGEOUS GURU (J. Holder), which had commenced to race fiercely, was forced to steady off the heels of TULLY THUNDER (D. Oliver), which shifted in. As a result GORGEOUS GURU was taken in onto VENUS WAS HER NAME (NZ) (K. McEvoy), which was severely hampered and taken in onto LUCKY PUNCH (C. Lever) tightening that filly onto ENCOSTERINO (W. Kerford), which became unbalanced. D. Oliver was severely reprimanded and advised in future he would be expected to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

Shortly after ENCOSTERINO (W. Kerford) lost its position when tightened by LUCKY PUNCH (C. Lever) as that filly was inclined to shift in, away from other runners.

Inside the 200 metres SURSUM CORDA (NZ) (P. Gatt) lost its position when tightened by VENUS WAS HER NAME (NZ) (K. McEvoy), which shifted in, resulting in SURSUM CORDA (NZ) being taken in and contacting GINGER RAJA (D. Carney), which was inclined to lay back. K. McEvoy was advised that although not solely responsible for the incident he would be required to take greater care when shifting ground in future.

TULLY THUNDER suffered a laceration to the near fore knee during the race.

RACE 6 : TURFGRASS ADELAIDE – PORT ADELAIDE GUINEAS 1800 metres

In the vicinity of the 1300 metres SOLITARY SOLDIER (G. Childs), which was inclined to lay out and race fiercely, was obliged to steady off the heels of BONNINGTON (S. Price), which shifted in.

HILLSGROVE (S. Baster) was inclined to race fiercely in the early and middle stages of the race.

Racing to the 200 metres HILLSGROVE (S. Baster) was disappointed when attempting a run inside PRAY IN VAIN (S. Cahill), which shifted in.

SATURDAY FEVER suffered a laceration to its near hind cannon during the race.

RACE 7 : KOUKOUROU ENGINEERS HANDICAP 1050 metres

VARGNA (W. Kerford) knuckled on jumping away.

SECRET REMEDY (P. Carbery) and PONTEVEDRA (T. Creek) both jumped away awkwardly.

RACE 8 : DUNLOP FLOORING HANDICAP 1544 metres

G. Dorol was examined by the Club’s Surgeon and ruled fit to ride.

PIETA (J. Holder) was slow into stride.

CANADIAN COMET (D. Carney) raced ungenerously in the middle stages of the event.

CANADIAN COMET suffered a puncture wound to the near fore cannon during the race.
