Mornington (VIC) - Wednesday 13 March 2002
Track: GOOD
Weather: FINE
Rail: TRUE POSITION

Riding Changes:

Race Horse Rider Replaced By Reason
7 "Boxter Blue" Andrea Beveridge R. Wheeler Indisposed
8 "Gattaca (NZ)" D. Gauci N. Rawiller Unavailable
9 "Killruddery" R. Cartwright N. Wilson Indisposed

Race 1 - WORKSAFE SUPER VOBIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres:

On jumping away "Our Dream Running" was hampered when tightened for room between "Bull Backer", which shifted in slightly, and "Land Lady", which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

In the early and middle stages of the race "Benevole" raced greenly.

Near the 600 metres "Benevole" had to be checked across the heels of "Land Lady" when taken out by "Bull Backer" which, after initially being taken out by "Our Dream Running" (N. Callow), shifted out away from that gelding. Whilst the Stewards accepted that the greenness of the horses involved contributed to the incident, they notified N. Callow that he must make every effort to keep his mounts straight in future.

Approaching the winning post "Mighty Moose" was bumped by "Royal Rule", which shifted in slightly.

Race 2 - RACERS MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:

Approaching and rounding the home turn "Scaler" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

"Scaler" then obtained a narrow run between "Brearlo" and "Our Belle (NZ)" (N. Wilson), which shifted out slightly at that stage before then shifting in slightly under pressure, which resulted in "Scaler" being taken in on to "Brearlo", which resulted in "Brearlo" having to be checked. Whilst the Stewards believed that there was some circumstance the Stewards reprimanded N. Wilson, and notified him that they would expect him to stop riding and straighten his mount in similar circumstances in future.

The Stewards questioned N. Rawiller, rider of "Brearlo", regarding his use of the whip in the early part of the straight. After taking evidence from G. Eades, rider of "Scaler", N. Wilson, rider of "Our Belle (NZ)", and N. Rawiller, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry to the Racing Centre at 9.30 a.m. on Friday, 15th March, 2002.

Near the 200 metres "Salient King" was inconvenienced due to "Warrior Rose" shifting in under pressure.

Race 3 - G. & K. O'CONNOR CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

"Spurious" was slow to begin.

In the early part of the straight "Spurious" shifted in slightly away from "Tineke", which also shifted in slightly and bumped "Stylish Bid". "Stylish Bid" then became unbalanced and shifted in across the heels of "Wijan" (L. Milham), which was shifting out under pressure. L. Milham was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

A veterinary examination of "Moyarra", which had performed poorly, revealed no apparent abnormality.

Race 4 - MADDOCK'S CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

For some distance after passing the 600 metres and running to the home turn "Ted's Jester" was held up for a run

Race 5 - A.A.M.I. CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1500 metres:

Rounding the home turn "Pure Irony" became unbalanced when racing tight on the inside of "Thunder Hawk"

Race 6 - EAT WELL LIVE WELL PAKENHAM CUP - 1500 metres:

W. Davis was declared to ride both "Another Neptune" and "Wellington". J. Winks was then inadvertently notified as the rider of "Wellington" when, in fact, R. Wheeler had been engaged to ride that gelding. Due to a misunderstanding J. Winks was then engaged. The Stewards ruled that R. Wheeler rider "Wellington".

W. Davis was severely reprimanded for the circumstances in which he was declared as the rider of both horses, and notified that he must make a better arrangement with his manager.

Mr. P. Healey, trainer of "Mr. Bombastic", reported to the Stewards that the gelding had sustained a minor abrasion to its near hind leg, and asked that a veterinary examination be conducted. "Mr. Bombastic" was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon both after arriving on the course and at the barrier prior to the race, and passed fit to run.

"Another Neptune" was slow to begin.

"Blue Murder" jumped the crossing near the 1200 metres and became unbalanced.

During the running of the race "Lord Kingston" lost both fore plates.

Race 7 - SCHWEPPES CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 2400 metres:

Approaching the 400 metres "Rising fine" had to be checked off the heels of "monagela".

Race 8 - CARLTON DRAUGHT HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

Near the 800 metres "Bond" became unbalanced after brushing the running rail.

Approaching the winning post 'Gattaca (NZ)" and 'Red Vista" bumped due to both horses shifting ground.

Race 9 - SOUTH EAST NEWS CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 2400 metres:

Approaching the winning post the first time "Yonrad", which was pulling hard, accidentally clipped the heels of "Our Starway (NZ)" when the pace slackened, and had to be checked.

Turning out of the straight "Yonrad" had to be eased off the heels of "Our Starway (NZ)".

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from "Wijan", winner of the G. & K. O'Connor Class 2 Handicap - Race 2, and from "Lord Kingston", winner of the Eat Well Live Well Pakenham Cup - Race 6.

Random swab samples were taken from "Warrior Rose", winner of the Racers Maiden Plate - Race 2, from"Millennium Dancer (NZ)", third placegetter in the Schweppes Class 4 Handicap - Race 7, and from "Gattaca (NZ)", winner of the Carlton Draught Handicap - Race 8

Six horses were pre-race blood tested for post-race analysis.

FINES/EXPLANATIONS:

The Stewards accepted the explanation of Mr. S. Webb, trainer of "Tineke", for the late notification of N. Rawiller as the rider of the gelding which ran in the G. and K. O'Connor Class 2 Handicap - Race 3.

Mr. Julian Welsh, trainer of "Thunder Hawk", was fined $50 for the late notification of M. Goring as the rider of the gelding which ran in the A.A.M.I. Class 3 Handicap - Race 5.

Mr. P. Fell, trainer of "Ningbo Warrior (USA)", was fined the sum of $50 for the late notification of R. Wheeler as the rider of the gelding which ran in the Carlton Draught Handicap - Race 8.

Mr. Robbie Laing, trainer of "Momentum Man (NZ)", was fined $50 for the late notification of Ryan Martin as the rider of the gelding which ran in the South East News Class 1 Handicap - Race 9.
