metres: "Riona" jumped away awkwardly, shifted out
abruptly across the running of "Cousy", and tightened "Empowerment" on
to "Refuel", resulting in those horses being hampered. "Tycoon Ruler" made contact with "Titanic
Jack" on jumping away. "Tycoon Ruler" then shifted in abruptly, clipped the
heels of "Refuel", and knuckled. Near the 800 metres "Riona" shifted out away from
"Cousy" and hampered "Tycoon Ruler". In the straight "Mighty Mirage", which was laying
in, was inconvenienced in the run to the post when attempting a narrow run between
"Titanic Jack" and "Costalette", which shifted out slightly. D. Gauci, rider of "Riona" which performed below
expectations, stated that the filly settled well in the early stages of the race, but when
asked to improve from the home turn failed to respond to his riding. Gauci added that
"Riona" felt normal on pulling up. A veterinary examination of "Riona"
failed to reveal any abnormality. Race 2 - TED COCKRAM HANDICAP - 1200 metres:
Running to the 800 metres "Uncle Willy" had to be
checked when tightened for room by "Magnus Bay", which shifted in away from
"Blue Wina" after being taken in slightly by that gelding, which shifted in when
not clear. The Stewards notified G. Childs, rider of "Blue Wina", that he must
ensure that he is clear of other runners when shifting ground in future. "Calling O'Reilly (NZ)" had difficulty obtaining
a clear run rounding the home turn and was unable to obtain a clear run in the straight. Race 3 - TONY HODGSON MOONEE VALLEY HURDLE -
about 3200 metres: On the home turn the first time "Treasure Island"
was tightened for room by "Sir Cool (NZ)", which was racing on the inside of
"Noah Yarn". Race 4 - WALLY MARIANI HANDICAP - 1600 metres:
"Tricked" jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Near the winning post "Franjelica" was tightened
slightly between "'Oregon Seal (NZ)" and "Donvamore" due to both
        horses shifting ground. Race 5 - JOHN D'ARCY HANDICAP - 2040 metres:
No report. Race 6 - BRENDAN McCARTHY HANDICAP - 1200
metres: The Stewards adjourned an inquiry into "Hidden
Clause" falling on the home turn to a date to be fixed after taking evidence from
Kerrin McEvoy, rider of "Kashkii (NZ)", L. Milham, rider of "Mr.
Bombastic" and C. Newitt, rider of "Foreign Affair". D. Gauci, rider of "Blue Danzig" which performed
poorly, stated that the gelding did not handle the track conditions, and hung in when
giving ground running to and rounding the home turn, and for this reason he did not ride
it out over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any
abnormalities. Race 7 - RIC CHARLTON HANDICAP - 1500 metres:
"Runs on Ego", which was over-racing, had to be
checked off the heels of "Mr. Magoo" near the 900 metres. Shortly after this "Mr. Magoo", which shifted in,
had to be checked off the heels of "Roktzar" when taken out slightly by
"Mr. Donizetti (NZ)". On the home turn "Star Doc" had to be eased off
the heels of "Brave Chief", and "Royal Treen", which was following,
then had to be eased off the heels of 'Star Doc". Race 8 - ROBIN CLEMENTS HANDICAP - 2040 metres:
Shortly after the start "Valley of Kings" was
hampered when tightened for room between "Mapua (NZ)" and "Mowgreen
(NZ)". Near the winning post the first time "Babe
Zaharias" was tightened for room between "All Rock Hard (NZ)" and
"Lady Mulroy", which had to shift in to avoid the heels of "Gem
Trader". "Lady Mulroy" had a tendency to lay in under
pressure over the concluding stages. SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of
all races today. FINES/EXPLANATIONS: J. Patton, who was overweight to ride "Gejastjo"
in Race 2 and "Tricked" in Race 4, was unable to waste. The Stewards notified J.
Patton that should he accept rides outside of his weight bracket in future they may
        penalise him. |
