Mount Gambier (SA) - Friday 8 February 2002
Track: Dead
Weather: Overcast
Rail: Normal Position

RACE 1 – STAMFORD GRAND ADELAIDE HURDLE:

NAZGALOV (P. Kelly) was slow to begin.

DRINKWATER fell at the obstacle at the 600 metres. J. Hateley, rider of that gelding, was uninjured. A veterinary inspection of DRINKWATER revealed that it had suffered some minor lacerations as a result of the fall.

P. Ryan, trainer of MIGHTY MARCANO, was fined $100 for engaging an unregistered person to strap the gelding.

RACE 2 – CARLTON & UNITED BREWERIES / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division):

C. Lindop replaced P. Marks as the rider of TURFGATOR owing to a misunderstanding in the booking of P. Marks.

Racing to the 800 metres RULE BY CHARM (NZ) (L. Smith) had to be eased due to FULL ON RED (J. Julian) shifting ground.

RACE 3 – STAMFORD PLAZA ADELAIDE / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE:

Racing to the 400 metres HONEYED (D. Yendall) had to be eased and shifted outwards to avoid the heels of BAG OF PEARLS (K. Post).

Racing to the 300 metres LORRAINE’S GIFT (W. Kerford) showed a tendency to lay out and at the same time BAG OF PEARLS (K. Post) rolled in resulting in those horses bumping.

L. Fartch, the trainer of ELTON’S ROSE, was asked to explain to the Stewards why that filly had raced in this race without blinkers when he had sought permission and lodged a stable return to race the filly in blinkers. Mr. Fartch explained that he had applied for blinkers for the filly and had forgotten to present ELTON’S ROSE to race in that gear. After considering all the evidence the Stewards fined Mr. Fartch $100 under ARR 140A for being negligent in presenting that filly to race in the incorrect gear.

RACE 4 – STAMFORD PLAZA ADELAIDE DISTANCE CLASS 4 HANDICAP:

BASANK (S. Dunn) was slow to begin.

As the gates were released STORMY CHALLENGE (P. Marks) shifted out and as a result PANNING FOR GOLD (M. Hoppo) and TRUE AS (D. Mittiga) were inconvenienced.

Racing to the 1800 metres PORT CAMPBELL (M. Evans) had to be eased and lost ground due to LUCKY VEINE (S. Harrison) being inconvenienced by ALL BLACK SYMPHONY (C. Robertson).

Racing to the 900 metres LUCKY VEINE (S. Harrison) became unbalanced, brushed the running rail, shifted out and brushed BREAK ME SHAKE ME (C. Bryant), which had rolled in.

RACE 5 – STAMFORD PLAZA ADELAIDE CLASS 2 HANDICAP:

Correct Weight was delayed in being semaphored for this event to allow the connections of HEART RENDING to view the official photo finish of the race. After doing so, in conjunction with the Judge and Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

SUMMER WIND (D. Yendall) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 200 metres GALWAY SPARKLER (K. Post) shifted out and inconvenienced SCENIC GLOW (M. Evans).

Over the concluding 100 metres BELKELSEY (L. Smith) and AMELON (C. Puls) were both unable to obtain sufficient galloping room to obtain clear runs.

RACE 6 – STAMFORD GRAND ADELAIDE CLASS 1 HANDICAP:

After arriving at the barrier OUR SPEED LINE dislodged its rider, S. Harrison, and broke away. OUR SPEED LINE was recaptured shortly after by the Clerk of the Course and returned to the barrier where a veterinary inspection of the filly declared it fit to start.

On arrival at the barrier MURILLA GORILLA underwent a veterinary inspection and was found to be suffering some lameness in its near hind leg. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of MURILLA GORILLA at 3.09 pm, acting on veterinary advice.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on MURILLA GORILLA be refunded. Bets made prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 15 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 15 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

Before being loaded in the barrier OUR SPEED LINE dislodged S. Harrison and threw itself to the ground. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of OUR SPEED LINE at 3.10 pm to prevent any further delay to the start of the race.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on OUR SPEED LINE be refunded. Bets made prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 15 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 15 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

As a result of these incidents, the start of this race was delayed several minutes.

Mrs. H. Frew, trainer of OUR SPEED LINE, was advised that the filly will have to trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial before accepting for a race again.

Racing to the 500 metres KARNAK (M. Munday) had to be eased off the heels of VAIN CARLEY (T. Barras), which was taken out slightly by EL FAYZE (M. Evans).

RACE 7 – STAMFORD HOTELS & RESORTS HANDICAP:

No report.

RACE 8 – STAMFORD GRAND ADELAIDE CLASS 3 HANDICAP:

K. Post replaced J. Julian as the rider of RUBYCEE due to J. Julian being overweight. J. Julian was fined $100 under ARR 120B.

K. Post, rider of RUBYCEE, and L. Smith, rider of NORTHERN CASTLE, were both reminded of their obligations in respect to weighing in over their declared weight.

RACE 9 – CARLTON & UNITED BREWERIES / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division):

J. Julian replaced S. Harrison as the rider of KINCOY due to S. Harrison being incorrectly shown in the race book as the rider of that gelding.

Mr. P. Jones’ explanation for T. Barras failing to appear in the race book as the rider of MATRIARCH was accepted.

L. Smith replaced C. Robertson as the rider of MYOPIC due to C. Robertson becoming indisposed.

MATRIARCH (T. Barras) commenced to hang out from the 900 metres and on entering the straight ran off. Mr. P. Jones, trainer of MATRIARCH, was advised that the mare would be required to pass a satisfactory barrier trial before being accepted for a race again.

FINAL CHANCE (M. Evans) was held up for a run from the 500 metres until about the 400 metres when that filly shifted in and bumped CHANGE THE STYLE (C. Lindop).

SWABBING:

Swab samples were taken from the following horses:-

Race 3 RAMEN (winner)
Race 8 RUBYCEE (winner)
