Mount Gambier (SA) - Thursday 11 July 2002
Track: Good
Weather: Overcast
Rail: True

RACE 1 – STERILINE RACING / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE – 900 metres

SOCIAL HOST (B. Vale) jumped away awkwardly.

GHOST SPIRIT (J. Maund) was slow to begin.

When the gates were released SALTIMBANCO (B. Claridge) was hampered due to TOUCH OF IRONY (D. Carney) shifting in, and at the same time RUBYROSE (J. Holder) shifting out.

Racing to the 800 metres OUR PEBBLES (M. Neilson) had to be eased to avoid the heels of TOUCH OF IRONY (D. Carney), when that gelding shifted in. Shortly after OUR PEBBLES (M. Neilson) rolled out, resulting in RUBYROSE (J. Holder) shifting out slightly, which resulted in PRINCE BLEV (J. Potter), which was racing greenly, to shift out and in consequence LOTTIE (K. Louca) clipped the heels of SOCIAL HOST (B. Vale) and became unbalanced for some distance.

Shortly after the 800 metres SOCIAL HOST (B. Vale) became unbalanced and brushed the running rail on several occasions.

Racing to the 700 metres GHOST SPIRIT (J. Maund) was reluctant to race on the inside of SCOOTIN’ ANNIE (N. Tomizawa) and as a result was unable to hold its position and lost ground.

RACE 2 – GEBHARDTS REAL ESTATE / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division) – 1200 metres

ASTRAL VENTURE underwent a Veterinary examination prior to the running of the race and was declared fit to start.

GLORY MARCH (S. Cahill) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 1000 metres FULL SPEC (Darren Holland) had to be eased to avoid the heels of BANDWAGON (P. Gatt), when that filly slackened the pace and as a result NAOMI PREVAILS (NZ) (M. Neilson) was hampered and lost ground.

Subsequent to the event a Veterinary inspection of DE ROSSI revealed the gelding was suffering soreness in its near hindquarters. Stewards advised Mr. T. Dabernig, representing Mr. A. McEvoy Trainer of DE ROSSI, that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required for the filly before accepting for a future event.

RACE 3 – GEBHARDTS REAL ESTATE / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division) – 1200 metres

At the request of Trainer Ms. L. Treloar GREG underwent a Veterinary inspection prior to the running of the race and it was found to have a trickle of blood in its near nostril and as a result the Veterinary Surgeon recommended the gelding be scratched. GREG was withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 12.50 p.m. acting on Veterinary advice.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on GREG be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 29 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 20 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

SKYCOUP (R. Faehr) was slow to begin.

In the vicinity of the 700 metres VICTORY SHOUTS (T. Barras) raced greenly.

RACE 4 – YALUMBA CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

SHE’S OUR GAZA (M. Hoppo) hung out from the 600 metres until entering the straight.

T. Creek, rider of RUBIN JAMES, explained that the gelding had every chance in running and failed to respond to his riding over the final 600 metres.

RACE 5 – SCOTT GROUP OF COMPANIES HANDICAP – 1400 metres

Apprentice Jockey M. Neilson was questioned in the presence of Mr. I. Walker, Trainer of GENEARL MAGIC, with respect to his ride on the gelding. M. Neilson explained that he anticipated NOISY PROSPECT would lead in the race and his instructions were to get a position off the pace. M. Neilson further explained that after NOISY PROSPECT had been ridden to lead, he was unable to settle GENERAL MAGIC and in consequence the gelding pulled hard and contested the lead with NOSIY PROSPECT throughout the race. Mr. Walker confirmed those instructions to M. Neilson and also expressed that he was concerned that his horse had been up challenging the lead during the race. Stewards advised M. Neilson that while he had been a victim of circumstances, he would be expected to use more initiative in races in future.

RACE 6 – CARLTON & UNITED DISTANCE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 2200 metres

SLIGO CLASSIC (B. Vale) jumped away awkwardly.

When the gates were released DAPPERSTAN (N. Tomizawa) and HEADACHE (T. Barras) bumped.

N. Tomizawa, rider of DAPPERSTAN, explained that racing to the 1000 metres the gelding had commenced to hang and as a result shifted out, which allowed DANTE’S WISH (NZ) (D. Carney) a run on his inside and in consequence DAPPERSTAN was trapped three wide from that point of the race until entering the straight.

Racing to the 400 metres DAPPERSTAN (N. Tomizawa) and BAITENHAUSEN (S. Cahill) bumped.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of DAPPERSTAN revealed the gelding had suffered a minor abrasion to its near fore leg.

OSH (J. Maund) was slow to begin.

TONGOWOKO (D. Tootell) and BALFADEZ (K. Louca) bumped on jumping away.

ON THE GROG (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly and as a result that rider hit his left leg on the barrier. D. Carney was declared fit to fulfil his remaining engagement.

HISHI EL underwent a Veterinary inspection subsequent to the running of the race, which revealed the filly may have choked down during the event.

RACE 8 – SNEATH’S TRANSPORT 2YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 metres

CHEVALAE (B. Claridge), TURTLE DIARY (R. Faehr) and CARRAJA (B. Vale) all jumped away awkwardly and lost ground as a result.
