RACE 1 – BELLOTTO/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division):

Correct Weight was delayed in being semaphored for this event to allow J. Bowditch, rider of 5th Placegetter SHIRAZ NOW, to view the official film in the vicinity of the 600 metres. After doing so, that rider lodged an objection against SIMONDE (D. Tootell) being declared the 4th Placegetter, on the grounds of alleged interference racing between the 600 to in the vicinity of the 400 metres. After taking evidence from all parties, on their own observations and viewing the official video film of the event, Stewards upheld J. Bowditch’s objection, resulting in the amended placings being:
First 1 GIACOMO (S. Cahill)
Second 14 WORDLY WAYS (T. Creek)
Third 8 POLONAISE (P. Gatt)
Fourth 2 SHIRAZ NOW (J. Bowditch)
Fifth 9 SIMONDE (D. Tootell)

Racing inside the 600 metres SIMONDE (D. Tootell), when racing fiercely, shifted out, resulting in SHIRAZ NOW (J. Bowditch) being tightened for galloping room between that horse and LA PASSIONARA (S. Price), resulting in SHIRAZ NOW having to be severely checked and losing its position. Stewards took no further action, as they believed that no one rider was responsible.

RACE 2 – TANNER CABINET MAKING & JOINERY/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division):

The start of this race was delayed four minutes owing to BURNT PEAT rearing in its stall, resulting in the filly having to undergo a Veterinary inspection, and being declared fit to take its place in the field, and the tongue tie having to be adjusted on two occasions on VIVIENNE.

HILLS OF FIRE (D. Azis) jumped away awkwardly.

SCENARAJA (M. Hoppo) and DUKATTI GREY (D. Carney) were both slow to begin.

Shortly after the start PENTACLES (J. Holder) commenced to buck for some distance, resulting in that rider being dislodged from the mare. As a result, Ms. A. Williams Trainer of PENTACLES, was advised the mare was now banned from racing for a period, until such time as it can trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards. J. Holder suffered bruising to the right side of his body. As a result, J. Holder was stood down from riding for the remainder of the day.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres BURNT PEAT (K. Louca), which was racing ungenerously, shifted in slightly, resulting in BROCCI (J. Maund) having to be eased. J. Maund reported to Stewards when being eased BROCCI rolled in, brushing the running rail, resulting in the mare shifting out and across the heels of BURNT PEAT.

K. Louca was advised by the Stewards that although not totally responsible for the incident, he would be required to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

RACE 3 – HAPPY GIGGLE CLASS 3 HANDICAP (AUS v IRE SERIES):

Shortly after passing the winning post on the first occasion, DELEGATE (T. Hazlett) shifted in, resulting in FIDDLER’S GREEN (G. Dorol) having to be eased. In consequence SHIGERU SHOBUSHI (P. Carberry), which had been racing on the inside of FIDDLER’S GREEN was also forced to ease in turn.

T. Hazlett was advised of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 4 – PACIFIC REAL ESTATE COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES CLASS 1 HANDICAP:

PEKOE (L. Smith) stood flat-footed as the gates opened, resulting in the gelding losing considerable ground. Ms. Y. Forrest, Trainer of PEKOE, was advised that a repetition of the gelding’s behaviour could lead to it being banned for a period.

In the vicinity of the 1100 metres LINE OF GOLD (T. Creek) showed a tendency to shift out, resulting in IKAROS (S. Cahill) being taken out onto MANILOW (J. Bowditch). At the same time CASH EXCHANCE (D. Cleaver) shifted in slightly, resulting in BRIGHT ROCK (J. Maund) being taken in onto MANILOW. As a result of these movements MANILOW was forced to ease and lose its position. Stewards took no further action as they believed that no one rider was responsible.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres BRIGHT ROCK (J. Maund) was forced to ease off the heels of LINE OF GOLD (T. Creek).

RACE 5 – BREAST SCREEN SA FREE MAMOGRAM CLASS 5 HANDICAP:

NOBLE WIN was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of D. Tootell, rider of INDI STAR, in the vicinity of the 100 metres.

RACE 6 – KINGS HORSE TRANSPORT CLASS 3 HANDICAP:

D. Tootell replaced J. Holder as the rider of I KEN.

In the vicinity of the 1300 metres LAWFUL POKER (D. Mittiga) shifted in, when insufficiently clear of JEZARICH (G. O’Loughlin), resulting in that mare having to be eased and in doing so clipped the heels of LAWFUL POKER, resulting in G. O’Loughlin almost being dislodged.

D. Mittiga was subsequently charged with Careless Riding under ARR 137(a), and after being found guilty of the charge was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Thursday 9th August and for a period to expire at midnight on the 25th August 2001. A period of three Metropolitan Meetings.

RACE 7 – MOHAWK LODGE/SABIS FILLIES & MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP:

L. Smith replaced J. Holder as the rider of AMACLASE.

Racing inside the 1000 metres BRIANNA BLONDIE (W. Kerford) shifted in slightly, resulting in LADY GLENLEIGH (J. Bowditch) shifting in and away from that horse. In consequence WALAMA (NZ) (C. Buchiw), which had been racing on the inside of LADY GLENLEIGH, was inconvenienced.

RACE 8 – MURRAY ELECTRICAL MAIDEN PLATE:

D. Tootell replaced J. Holder as the rider of RIMULA.

FEAR REIGN (D. Cleaver) showed a tendency to over-race in the early and middle stages of the event.

Racing inside the 100 metres FREE WORLD (P. Gatt) shifted out under riding, resulting in VISIBLE HALO (S. Cahill) having to be eased to avoid the heels of that gelding.

P. Gatt was subsequently charged with Careless Riding under ARR 137(a), and after being found guilty of the charge was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence to midnight on 11th August and to expire at midnight on 18th August 2001. A period of one Metropolitan Meeting.

P. Gatt was advised by Stewards that his impeccable record, and the Stewards belief that the interference fitted the new sentencing criteria adopted by Stewards as from 1st August, led to the one Metropolitan suspension.
