RACE 1 – NARACOORTE TAXIS SABIS MAIDEN PLATE:

K. Post was confirmed as the rider of YANKEE BABE.

Mr. R. Jackway was fined $50 for not having declared a Jockey for YANKEE BABE by the required time.

B. Claridge replaced L. Smith as the rider of OXFORD BELLA, owing to L. Smith being unaware of this engagement. Stewards accepted the explanation of Trainer Mr. L. Smart.

The start of this race was delayed owing to YANKEE BABE and BAG OF PEARLS having to be re-weighed after those horses were found in the Enclosure to have the wrong saddle cloth numbers. Mr. M. O’Leary, standing in for Trainer Mr. R. Jackway, was subsequently fined $100 under AR 140A for negligence in saddling.

Mr. G. Bowyer, Trainer of ANTON BELLE STAR, which proved difficult to load, was advised that a repetition of the filly’s behaviour would lead to action being taken against it.

OXFORD BELLA (B. Claridge) was slow to jump.

BAG OF PEARLS (D. Yendall) jumped away awkwardly and raced greenly in the middle stages of the race.

Near the 800 metres LOREN’S CRAZY MOON (P. Marks) shifted in and tightened THUMPING (Darren Holland) onto NAME IT (J. Potter), which was hampered and struck the fence when tightened.

P. Marks was advised to in future give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

In the vicinity of the 500 metres NAME IT (J. Potter) had to be checked to avoid the heels of THUMPING (Darren Holland), which had commenced to race greenly and shifted in, away from TUDOR ARMY (W. Kerford).

Inside the 400 metres NAME IT (J. Potter) was obliged to check off the heels of OXFORD BELLA (B. Claridge), which shifted in and away from CHANGE THE STYLE (C. Lindop).

Approaching the finish OXFORD BELLA (B. Claridge) shifted out abruptly and contacted THUMPING (Darren Holland).

RACE 2 – SIR LOIN BUTCHER HANDICAP:

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of SMOOTH FELLA revealed the gelding had damaged its near fore suspensory. Mrs. H. Lehmann, Trainer of SMOOTH FELLA, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for a future event.

RACE 3 – TODD PHOTOGRAPHICS COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES CLASS 1 HANDICAP:

The start of this race was delayed owing to MAR DE’S BOY breaking through the gates. MAR DE’S BOY was restrained by its rider T. Barras. The gelding was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start.

MORE MELBOURNE (S. Harrison) was slow to jump.

MAR DE’S BOY (T. Barras) jumped away awkwardly.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of STORMY CHALLENGE revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 6 – NARACOORTE RECYCABLES DISTANCE CLASS 2 HANDICAP:

FAMOUS PIRATE (W. Kerford) was held up for a short distance approaching the entrance to the straight.

When questioned regarding his handling of DANTE’S WISH, B. Claridge explained that he had been instructed to lead on the gelding, as it was the Trainer Mr. A. Opperman’s opinion that DANTE’S WISH was less than genuine if unable to do so. B. Claridge further stated that in the vicinity of the 1400 metres he had considered allowing RHYTHM ROYALE (NZ) (L. Smith) to stride to the lead and had eased his mount. He added that his mount had struggled after being placed under pressure near the 600 metres.

When questioned regarding his riding of RHYTHM ROYALE (NZ), L. Smith explained that he had been instructed to lead at all cost, as his mount was considered to be one-paced. Despite these instructions L. Smith could not offer any explanation as to why he did not take the opportunity to go to the lead in the vicinity of the 1400 metres when B. Claridge, on his inside, had attempted to ease and could offer no explanation as to why he had put his mount under severe pressure in the vicinity of the 900 metres.

L. Smith was informed that, in the Stewards opinion, his ride lacked initiative and in future he should ride in a manner which provided his mounts with the opportunity to obtain the best result possible.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of DANTE’S WISH revealed the gelding exhibited an elevated heart rate and an elevated respiratory rate, and was slow to recover.

Subsequent to the race the Veterinary Surgeon confirmed that ADVENTUROUS BOY sustained a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the race.

Mrs. A. Hunt, Trainer of ADVENTUROUS BOY, was advised that as this was the gelding’s second attack it was now banned for life in accordance with AR 53A.

J. Maund was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

KENVARS (G. Hoobin) was eased out of the race inside the 200 metres.
