PARK, SATURDAY NIGHT, 2 MARCH 2002 Ms E Candy, stable representative for trainer G Waterhouse,
reported that Heritiere (Race 6 - The Daily Telegraph Canterbury Guineas 1900M) and
Newquay (Race 7 - Raine & Horne Eskimo Prince Stakes 1100M) had pulled up well since
their disappointing performances and full veterinary examinations had failed to reveal any
abnormalities. Ms Candy added that it was Mrs Waterhouse's intention to continue on with
the current campaign for both runners. RACE 1 - GERARD INDUSTRIES MAIDEN PLATE 1,200M Touch Of Honor was slow to begin. Montreal shifted out at the start and hampered Lunar Creek. Breezer raced greenly in the early stages and near the 900M
shifted out resulting in Dragon Spirit being taken wider. Over the concluding stages Shepher's Lil and Dragon Spirit
came together due to both horses shifting ground. When questioned C O'Brien stated that consistent with its
most recent barrier trial Deranged was ridden off the speed today. He said although
Deranged raced with cover it overraced and was trapped wide. He added that from the 600M
he had to ride his mount along to maintain its position and the gelding finished the race
off only fairly. Trainer Mr P Anderson stated that it was the gelding's usual racing
pattern to be back in the field, however at its most recent start at Canterbury Deranged
was obliged to be ridden more forward due to having drawn the inside barrier. He added
that in his opinion Deranged had failed to finish its race off due to having overraced
throughout the event and consideration would now be given to removing the blinkers. RACE 2 - MISTRAL MAIDEN PLATE 1400M As D McLellan failed to arrive on course by the required
time, D Beadman was substituted as the rider of Monte Zoom. D McLellan was fined $100. Ares was slow to begin. Palace Night began very awkwardly losing considerable
ground and rounding the first turn got its head up when overracing. On two occasions in the early part of the straight Stafford
shifted out and bumped Ares. For some distance approaching the 200M Lifeline Express was
awkwardly placed close to the heels of Breadwinner and then near the 100M Lifeline Express
was again inconvenienced when Stafford shifted in slightly. RACE 3 - PIERLITE PROVINCIAL CLASS 6 PLATE 1600M Near the 200M Jacovic was checked when disappointed for a
run between Heeby Reiby and Mustard (B Cooper) which, after initially shifting in away
from Serpentine (P Graham), was taken in slightly by that runner. Both B Cooper and P
Graham were advised to exercise more care in future. When questioned regarding the performance of Heeby Reiby,
which was wearing blinkers for the first time, D Beasley stated that after overracing in
the early stages of the event Heeby Reiby travelled well throughout the race but over the
final 200 metres tired noticeably. Trainer N Mayfield-Smith stated that at its most recent
start at Warwick Farm Heeby Reiby had been inclined to lay in badly and for this reason he
added blinkers. He said it was obvious that Heeby Reiby had not appreciated the additional
gear and it was now his intention to remove them prior to the horse starting again. A post
race veterinary examinations of Heeby Reiby did not reveal any abnormalities. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of
Mustard (B Cooper) stated that at its most recent runs the horse had been suited by truly
run races, however today with little pace in the race Mustard raced hard within itself and
consequently was unable to finish the race off. Trainer Mr J McNair stated that Mustard
had not been suited by the tempo of today's race and undertook to report on the gelding's
progress tomorrow with a view to running it at Goulburn on Friday. A post race veterinary
examination of Mustard did not reveal any abnormality. Following his ride in this race, D Beasley advised that he
was unable to fulfil his remaining engagements after being kicked by Rocksign in the
enclosure after the running of Race 1. RACE 4 - CLIPSAL INDUSTRIAL PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 AND
MAIDEN PLATE 1600M Night Call jumped a mark on the track shortly after the
start and became unbalanced. At the entrance to the straight Institution was briefly
crowded for room between Hot Fame and World Harmony, which shifted out. A short distance later Hot Fame shifted in resulting in
World Harmony being taken in onto Miss Striker, which in turn shifted ground inwards
crowding the ground of Sky Belle for some distance. Night Call which was following was
hampered in consequence. Near the 200M World Harmony was checked when crowded for
room between Institution and Scenic Boom, which had been badly held up for a run and
which, after obtaining a tight run to the outside of Perance, was taken out when that
horse shifted ground while compounding quickly. A short distance later Scenic Boom was again crowded for
room between Institution and Perance which shifted further ground outwards. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of
Perance, C Munce stated that although he had to ride the gelding along in the early stages
to take up a forward position as instructed, Perance was most disappointing in that it
compounded badly in the straight. He added that in his opinion Perance had not been suited
by being ridden forward in the field today. Trainer B Partelle agreed with C Munce's
assessment that Perance had not been suited by racing on the speed and it was his
intention to ride the horse back in the field at its next start. A post race veterinary
examination of Perance did not reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken. Apprentice N Tomizawa, the rider of World Harmony, was
reprimanded for unnecessary use of the whip on a horse out of contention. RACE 5 - MERRIVALE WINERY CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200M Al Berg was slow to begin. Blinder shifted in at the start and hampered Phorcys. After being bumped by Melt The Guns shortly after the
start, Human Touch had to be checked across the heels of Tivoli Time which shifted in. Cruciate was held up for a run rounding the home turn and
in the early part of the straight. Melt The Guns was unable to obtain clear running until near
the 200M. After the race it was reported that Tivoli Time had been
galloped on on the near hind leg. RACE 6 - CLIPSAL SLIMLINE AUTUMN COUNTRY CUP OPEN CLASS
1200M Due to communication difficulties R Thompson was
inadvertently declared as the rider of both Olivier and Wry Hero. C Munce was substituted
as the rider of Olivier. As D Beasley was inadvertently declared as the rider of Paris
Fortune due to a misunderstanding, G Boss was substituted. As apprentice R Brewer was unable to claim his full
allowance, apprentice N Tomizawa was substituted as the rider of Rather Proud. Apprentice
Brewer was fined $100. A veterinary examination of Paris Fortune, which tailed
off, did not reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr G Yorke undertook to report to stewards
the progress of the gelding in the days subsequent to the event. RACE 7 - CLIPSAL NEWMARKET HANDICAP 1400M The start was delayed for a considerable period due to the
strapper of Archaea being injured in the saddling enclosure after being kicked by another
runner. Stewards heard a submission from jockey A W Robinson that
Perfect Paradise be declared a non-runner after that horse lost considerable ground at the
start. As the stewards were of the opinion that as the gates were released Perfect
Paradise reared but no other party had impaired the ability of Perfect Paradise to jump
with the field, that gelding was declared a starter. After taking into consideration the
extended period of time that Perfect Paradise was behind the barriers, stewards advised
trainer D Throsby that no action would be taken against the gelding, however a warning
would be recorded against its barrier manners. On jumping Archaea was crowded for room between Hey Pronto
and Idominate, both of which shifted ground. Near the 700M Hey Pronto became badly unbalanced when
bumped on the hindquarters by Juggling Time. A post race veterinary examination of The Man found the
gelding to have cast its near fore plate resulting in the gelding pulling up lame in that
leg. Trainer P Sutherland was advised that should The Man continue its preparation he
would be required to furnish a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start. C Brown (Mowerman) returned to scale in excess of a
kilogram over his declared weight and was fined $150. RACE 8 - CLIPSAL VISION PROVINCIAL CLASS 3 PLATE 1300M The starting time of this event was put back to 5.55pm. Following the running of Race 7 A W Robinson, the rider of
Gold Banker, was stood down by the club's doctor. B Cooper was substituted. Two Smok'n Barrells was held up for a run in the early part
of the straight. Kasteel was unable to obtain clear running until the final
100 metres. When questioned G Buckley stated that due to Fashion Line
drawing wide it had been his instructions to try and obtain cover rather than go forward
and be caught wide.     SUMMARY: FINES: Race 2 - D McLellan, $100 (AR 85B)
