Newcastle (NSW) - Saturday 12 January 2002
Weather: Fine
Track: Good

RACE 1 - HOTEL CBD MAIDEN PLATE 1500M

Acting on veterinary advice that Artesiana was lame in the off fore leg, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the filly at 1.02pm.

Stewards subsequently directed that all monies wagered on Artesiana be refunded in full and made no other alteration to betting.

Mr K Forbes, representing trainer P Perry, was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to Artesiana racing again.

Gomax and Back In Style were slow to begin.

Shortly after the start the saddle on Vivacious Rani shifted forward placing apprentice T Muto at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

Back In Style hung out in the middle stages.

Near the 900M Phantom Rose, which had jumped away awkwardly, shifted out abruptly inconveniencing Gomax.

Passing the 200M Night Call hung in and proved difficult to ride for some distance.

Flying Nicko shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.

A W Robinson was reprimanded under AR 83(a) for misconduct regarding the use of the whip on Bangaroo in the mounting enclosure.

A post race veterinary examination of the poorly performed Berah did not reveal any abnormality.

Mr G Taylor, representing trainer M Johnston, advised stewards that in his opinion the performance of Berah was disappointing as the stable had expected a forward showing. Mr Taylor undertook to report if there is anything amiss with the gelding in the days subsequent.

RACE 2 - CITY GLASS NEWCASTLE CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1400M

Sybil's Rose was slow into stride.

When questioned regarding the riding tactics on Exotikos, A W Robinson stated that it was the intention to ride the horse further back than at its previous start as, with the pace of runners inside him, he would have been trapped three wide without cover. A W Robinson added that the gelding hung out badly from the 800M and was disappointing in not finishing the race off.

A post race veterinary examination of Exotikos found the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg.

Mr K Forbes representing trainer P Perry was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to Exotikos racing again.

RACE 3 - CHARLESTOWN VENDING SERVICE MAIDEN PLATE 900M

As A Huke failed to arrive on course on time due to transport difficulties, M Scorse was substituted as the rider of Calhoun.

Stafford was slow to begin.

On jumping Simply The Best shifted in bumping Belubula Prince which became unbalanced.

On jumping Kub shifted in abruptly at the same time as Supera shifted out, as a consequence Barclay's Lad clipped the heels of Kub and dipped.

Burnin' Vernon and Great Niece were crowded at the start.

Near the 500M Veneer had to be steadied when momentarily crowded by Burnin' Vernon.

Near the 100M Simply The Best crashed through the inside running rail dislodging jockey C O'Brien.

Stable foreman Mr F Farrell was advised that Simply The Best would have to barrier trial twice to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to racing again.

Following the running of this race C O'Brien was stood down from his remaining riding engagements.

RACE 4 - BEAVIS HIRE SERVICE MAIDEN PLATE 1300M

Our Chum and Bondi Run came together on jumping.

Mr Brave Lad overraced in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the first turn Channon Prince was steadied away from the heels of Goodfella when that colt shifted in.

Goodfella then shifted out and in doing so bumped heavily with Our Chum which became unbalanced.

Near the 200M Mr Brave Lad and Lifeline Express came together and as a result Occidental, which was travelling behind those runners, was then blocked for a run until passing the 200M. Occidental was then inclined to lay inwards.

At the 200M Mullengandra Lad was crowded for room between Britt's Best and Lifeline Express which was bumped out by Mr Brave Lad.

Oblique was held up for a clear run until the 150M.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Occidental approaching the home turn, A W Robinson stated that he had been advised by the stable that Occidental had a breathing problem so acting in the best interests of the horse he elected to find inside runs rather than put the horse under excessive pressure by shifting wider. A W Robinson agreed with the stewards that he had erred in not

shifting out at that point to obtain a run to the outside of Mullengandra Lad which would have resulted in

Occidental not being held up at the vital stage of the race.

RACE 5 - DUCKS NUTS HOTEL OPEN HANDICAP 1200M

On jumping Straight Back was hampered when Out Break shifted in.

Making the first turn Night To Remember hung out badly resulting in Oakfield Prince being taken wider.

Mr K Forbes representing trainer P Perry was advised that a warning would be placed on Night To Remember's racing manners.

RACE 6 - EXPRESS COMMUNICATIONS PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE 1850M

No report.

RACE 7 - LATERAL COMMERCIAL FINANCE PROVINCIAL CLASS 3 PLATE 1300M

Magnum Lass and Cups Quest bumped on jumping.

Passing the 1100M Magnum Lass (M Privato) shifted in causing St Tevoc, Baystad and Dazzrail to be steadied.

M Privato was reprimanded and advised to make more racing room for his fellow rider. Once crossed Baystad commenced to overrace.

Near the 800M Stabilator commenced to overrace and had to be steadied out away from the heels of Bear Canyon.

Bear Canyon laid in in the early part of the straight.

Cups Quest, after being blocked for a run in the early part of the straight, was inclined to hang inwards under pressure over the final 150 metres. M Privato (Magnum Lass) pleaded guilty to the charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that whilst riding his mount along he allowed it to shift in crowding Bear Canyon in on to Real Dream which had to be checked and lost its running. M Privato's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday 16 January 2002 and to expire on Wednesday 23 January 2002 on which day he may ride.

Near the winning post Magnum Lass crowded Bear Canyon.

A post race veterinary inspection of Real Dream revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in front.

RACE 8 - ENZED FLUID CONNECTORS CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200M

Centillate was slow to begin.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Hawaiian Chimes A Gibbons stated that his mount travelled well until the 600M at which stage he placed Hawaiian Chimes under pressure but the mare failed to respond and ran home only fairly.

A post race veterinary examination of Hawaiian Chimes did not reveal any abnormality.
