When questioned regarding the improved performance of Perance, trainer Mr B Partelle stated that as instanced in the stewards' report from Newcastle on 6 March 2002, the gelding was not suited by being ridden forward on that occasion, and as stated on that day the instructions today were for Perance to be off the pace in order to settle the gelding. He said the thought Perance had got its tongue over the bit at its previous start and for this reason he experimented with a tongue tie as well as a crossover nose band as gear changes for today's event.
