Newcastle (NSW) - Saturday 20 April 2002
WEATHER: FINE
TRACK: GOOD
Rail out 4 metres

RACE 1 -Triflex Electrical 2yo Class D Handicap 900m

Danished was slow to begin. Hey Pretty Momma, which was slow to begin, was badly crowded shortly after the start by Dance The Wind which shifted out abruptly. Shortly after the start Sampaguita shifted out bumping Cheeky Kate. Approaching the 800M Cheeky Kate was checked when crowded between Sampaguita, which shifted out, and Dance The Wind, which shifted in. From the 600m Rogue's Gallery hung out badly forcing On Potential very wide. Subtraction, which was slow to begin, was momentarily held up for a clear run at the entrance to the straight behind the tiring Reloaded. Estaad raced greenly under pressure over the final 200 metres. A post race veterinary examination of Rogue's Gallery did not reveal any abnormality. Mr K Forbes representing trainer P Perry was advised that before Rogue's Gallery is permitted to race again it must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards.

RACE 2 - Hager B & R Maiden Plate 1500m

Sapphire Prince jumped awkwardly and shifted out abruptly resulting in Favoured Blend being checked and Nuclear Powered, Dantonesque and Mr Hollywood being hampered. Sapphire Prince then overraced in the early stages. Near the 300m Zzedd was checked when forced out across the heels of Charnwood Channon by Nuclear Powered which, while attempting a run to the outside of Sapphire Prince, was taken out by that runner which shifted out when tiring. A short distance later Magic Sort was inclined to lay in away from the heels of Fixed Stare resulting in Zzedd being crowded in consequence. G Buckley (Sapphire Prince) explained that his mount was inclined to lay out throughout the event and proved difficult to ride. S Treweek (Fixed Stare) was fined $150 under AR145 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram overweight.

RACE 3 - Stokes Appliance Parts Maiden Plate (DIV 1) 1200m

Obolensky was a late withdrawal at 1.31pm acting on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the near hind leg. Stewards ordered that all monies wagered on Oboloensky be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 1.31pm be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: win and traditional each way, 20 cents win and 16 cents place. Trainer B Hare was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Obolensky's next race start. Quest For Hope was slow to begin. Burnin' Vernon jumped awkwardly. Yasana bounded and lost ground at the start. Yasana, which was inclined to lay out, shifted out abruptly making the first turn. Eli overraced in the early and middle stages.

RACE 4 - Panduit (International) Maiden Plate (DIV 2) 1200m

Ikkindo was slow to begin. Stylish Kingdom jumped awkwardly, shifted in and bumped heavily with Personal Envoy which blundered. Integra Royal was bumped and became unbalanced when Personal Envoy laid out making the home turn. Approaching the 300M Oakfield Lad, which was disappointed for a narrow run between Integra Royal and Little Deuce Coupe when Little Deuce Coupe shifted in, was taken in and bumped Integra Royal which became unbalanced. Stylish Kingdom was held up for a clear run until passing the 250m. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Personal Envoy, AW Robinson stated that after knuckling over at the start his mount travelled satisfactorily until placed under pressure near the 400m but failed to run on and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of Personal Envoy did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 5 - Nesco Electrical Products Provincial Class 1 & Maiden Plate 1850m

Cuchulainn's Leap stood flatfooted when the gates were released losing ground. Cornersoff was badly held up for clear running in the straight until the final 100 metres. When questioned regarding Priscilla being back in the field today, M Squires explained that he was under no specific instructions other than to find cover. He said that from a wide barrier with the slow early pace he was obliged to settle further back in the field than intended. Trainer D Smith confirmed the instructions and was reminded of his obligation to advise stewards if there is to be a change in riding tactics.

RACE 6 - B & R Enclosures Class 3 Handicap 1400m

White Cliff was slow into stride. Big Diamond overraced in the early stages getting its head up on several occasions. Rave Heart was inclined to lay in in the straight and during the running its near hock bandage became unravelled. When questioned regarding leading today on Diamond Mac, B Compton stated that he intended to look for cover in the early stages and to be racing just behind the leaders. He said the gelding began well and he was surprised that the slow early pace resulted in him leading. He added that Diamond Mac pulled hard in the early stages which resulted in him leading by a greater margin than he had wanted.

RACE 7 - Esco Industries Open Handicap 1500m

A post race veterinary examination of Mansion did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 8 - Ecco Pacific Provincial Class 6 Plate 1200m

On return to scale an objection was lodged by T Muto, the rider of second placed The Net, against Prince Shep (R Agnew) being declared the winner. On the evidence it was established that passing the 100M Prince Shep shifted out abruptly making contact with The Net. The stewards were of the opinion that had the interference not occurred The Net would have finished ahead of Prince Shep and therefore the objection was upheld and the placing amended to No.2 The Net lst, No. 6 Prince Shep 2nd, No. 8 Winabull 3rd. At a subsequent inquiry apprentice R Agnew was reprimanded. Idominate ran off badly making the first turn. Trainer S Hodge said Idominate would now be spelled.
