Penola (SA) - Thursday 10 January 2002
Track: Good
Weather: Fine/Sunny
Rail: True position

RACE 1 – GARTNER WINES/SABIS FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division):

T. Barras replaced A. Stead as the rider of WAROOKA HONEY, owing to that rider being injured.

BRETOY DREAMS (D. Yendall) and RED’S TOY (W. Kerford) were slow to jump.

Inside the 200 metres RED’S TOY (W. Kerford) rolled in under riding, onto MATRIARCH (J. Julian), which in turn shifted in and away, resulting in GOLDEN MILINA (J. Potter) being tightened for galloping room and ultimately being disappointed for a run.

Correct Weight was delayed to allow J. Potter, rider of the 4th Placegetter GOLDLEN MILINA, to view the official head-on footage in the straight. After doing so, J. Potter lodged an objection against MATRIARCH (J. Julian), being declared the 3rd Placegetter, on the grounds of alleged interference in the straight. After taking evidence from all parties, viewing the official video film and acting on their own observations, Stewards dismissed the objection and Correct Weight was declared.

J. Julian was reprimanded and advised that although not entirely responsible for this incident, in similar circumstances in future he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mounts.

RACE 2 – ZEMA ESTATE/SABIS FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division):

DOT COM FEVER (D. Tootell) jumped away awkwardly.

STENOWN (G. Hoobin) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres STENOWN (G. Hoobin), which was inclined to race greenly, shifted in and brushed HIGH GAZER (T. Barras).

Inside the 200 metres MISSION BELLS (B. Blacker), while attempting a tight run inside GOLDEN KEEPER (D. Yendall), was disappointed when that mare shifted in under riding.

D. Yendall was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 3 – PUNTERS CORNER COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE:

Shortly after the start PROMISES ‘N’ LIES (M. Hagley) knuckled.

Racing to the 1000 metres SIMPLETON (L. Smith) shifted out and contacted CHANGE THE STYLE (C. Lindop). In consequence PROMISES ‘N’ LIES (M. Hagley) was obliged to shift out and then be steadied off the heels of CHANGE THE STYLE.

At the entrance to the straight STACK THE DECK (D. Tootell) and NAME IT (P. Marks) brushed together.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres MORE MELBOURNE (S. Harrison) shifted out and brushed MARK THE PLACE (K. Post), which, as a result, was inclined to lay back.

Over the concluding stages MARK THE PLACE (K. Post) shifted in abruptly under riding and brushed the hindquarters of MORE MELBOURNE (S. Harrison).

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of MOOKSTAR revealed no visible abnormalities.

STORMY CHALLENGE (P. Marks) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 1000 metres KELBOY (T. Barras) shifted in, taking EL FAYZE (C. Bryant) in, resulting in that mare contacting the running rail and being hampered. In consequence STORMY CHALLENGE (P. Marks) was obliged to steady off the heels of EL FAYZE.

T. Barras was advised to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

At the entrance to the straight EL FAYZE (C. Bryant) was held up for a short distance when unable to obtain a run between DR. QUOZ (J. Potter) and KELBOY (T. Barras), which had commenced to weaken.

RACE 5 – KATNOOK ESTATE DISTANCE CLASS 1 HANDICAP:

IN THE BUSH (D. Yendall) and MR. SMART GUY (S. Harrison) were slow to jump.

PANNING FOR GOLD (M. Hoppo) raced fiercely at several stages during the event.

Inside the 1100 metres ZEROCCO (T. Barras) commenced to race fiercely and shifted out, making contact with ETTAMOGAH LAD (R. Faehr), which became unbalanced.

Inside the 400 metres IN THE BUSH (D. Yendall) was disappointed when attempting a tight run outside MR. SMART GUY (S. Harrison) and inside of ZEROCCO (T. Barras), which had commenced to weaken and rolled in.

Correct Weight was delayed several minutes to allow D. Yendall, rider of the 2nd Placegetter IN THE BUSH, to view the official photo-print. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of ZEROCCO revealed the gelding was exhibiting signs of oxygen debt.

RACE 6 – RYMILL WINES/SABIS CLASS 1 HANDICAP:

The start of this race was delayed owing DANNICK (C. Puls) and BLEVONIC (P. Marks) proving difficult to load.

Mr. D. Kolpin Trainer of DANNICK, and Mr. G. Watts Trainer of BLEVONIC were advised should their horses be difficult to load in future, action would be taken against them.

DANNICK (C. Puls) jumped away awkwardly.

In the vicinity of the 1000 metres IVY’S BAMASH (D. Tootell) commenced to race fiercely and continued to race ungenerously until the entrance to the straight.

Near the 400 metres IVY’S BAMASH (D. Tootell) was obliged to steady off the heels of DANNICK (C. Puls), which had commenced to weaken, and in doing so got its head up and became unbalanced.

Approaching the finish BRUEGHELDANCER (C. Lindop) was tightened by FIERY SPOT (D. Yendall), which shifted in, taking BRUEGHELDANCER in onto FIESTA SHOW (C. Bryant), which in turn was inclined to lay back.

On the finish NORTHERN CASTLE (S. Harrison) shifted in under riding, tightening FIERY STOP (D. Yendall), taking that gelding in onto BRUEGHELDANCER (C. Lindop), which was forced to check severely.

D. Yendall and S. Harrison were reprimanded and advised in future to take greater care when shifting ground.

NORTHERN CASTLE sustained a laceration to its near hind leg during the race.

RACE 8 – THE MENZIES CLASS 3 HANDICAP:

Near the 100 metres LUCIETON LADY (K. Post) rolled out; at the same time as PERSIAN STING (W. Kerford) shifted in under riding, resulting in RUNAWAY RHYTHM (NZ) (C. Robertson) being inconvenienced.

W. Kerford was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 9 – ORLANDO WYNDHAM ST. HUGO MAIDEN PLATE:

GUM SAAN (G. Hoobin) was slow to jump.

Shortly after jumping away LYNBROOK LADY (P. Marks) shifted out and hampered TARPEIA (M. Munday).

When questioned regarding the performance of GUM SAAN, G. Hoobin advised that he had been instructed to ride the gelding forward in today’s race. G. Hoobin explained that although his mount had been slow to jump and he had been trapped wide at the turn in the vicinity of the 1000 metres, GUM SAAN had never travelled well and he had formed the opinion it was not striding out as freely as it had when he had previously ridden it. He added that when horses around him had improved in the vicinity of the 400 metres, GUM SAAN had been unable to do so. Mr. M. O’Leary, Trainer of GUM SAAN, confirmed his instructions.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of GUM SAAN revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg.
