Penola (SA) - Thursday 18 October 2001
Track: Slow
Weather: Cloudy
Rail: Normal position

RACE 1 – NARACOORTE & PENOLA VETERINARY CENTRES C, G & E MAIDEN PLATE

P. Marks replaced J. Barnett as the rider of KEEP IT REGAL owing to J. Barnett being indisposed through injury.

S. Harrison, rider of MONDERWYK, placed second, requested to view the official the photo finish of the race and upon doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

MAGUIRES MILLIONS (K. Post) was slow to begin.

RACE 2 – NEAPOLI BOY/SABIS FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE

The start of this race was delayed two minutes owing to the bridle on CAROLYN requiring adjustment.

GREAT WHITE EAGLE (S. Harrison) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 800 metres SHE’LL SIMMER (K. Post) showed a tendency to race greenly.

RACE 3 – F M DEAN MEMORIAL CLASS 3 HANDICAP

MAJESTIC HOPE (C. Lindop) jumped away awkwardly and inconvenienced GEORGIO (P. Marks).

RACE 4 – DREW’S WORKSHOP SUPPLIES/SABIS CLASS 1 HANDICAP

D. Yendall replaced J. Barnett as the rider of HE’S ON A MISSION.

A swab sample was taken from INTERFACE STAR, winner of the race.

Over the concluding stages NORTHERN CASTLE (P. Marks) shifted out under riding obliging P. Marks to stop riding and straighten the gelding.

RACE 5 – BANKS THARGO WINES DISTANCE CLAS 4 HANDICAP

C. Robertson, rider of RANDY’S SISTER, lost the use of his off side iron for a short distance on jumping away.

RACE 6 – KATNOOK ESTATE CLASS 2 HANDICAP

Racing to the 700 metres PINE MIST (P. Marks) shifted out to avoid the heels of DEQUELLO (J. Holder) and as a result EVACUATION (D. Mittiga) was taken wider on the track. EVACUATION eased and shifted in at this stage of the race and in consequence INDIGO ISLE (K. Post) had to be checked. D. Mittiga was severely reprimanded by the Stewards for shifting ground when insufficiently clear and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Racing to the 300 metres DEQUELLO (J. Holder) and PINE MIST (P. Marks) brushed together.

RACE 7 – WEST END HANDICAP

S. Harrison replaced J. Barnett as the rider of TRUE BLUE.

When the gates were released UMANOOLA (G. Hoobin) refused to leave the barrier. Trainer, Mr. D. Ferguson, was advised that the mare would have to barrier trial to the Stewards’ satisfaction before being accepted for a race again.

RACE 8 – LYNN’S IGA EVERYDAY DISTANCE MAIDEN PLATE

CHEEKY ROSIE (D. Mittiga) was slow to begin.

Mr. G. Smith, Trainer of PHOEBE D’OR, was asked if he could offer any explanation into the mare’s improved performance today as against its recent starts. Mr. Smith stated that, acting on the advice of his jockey, C. Lindop, he had added a tongue tie to the mare as Miss Lindop had advised him that at Mount Gambier on 3rd October PHOEBE D’OR had given an indication that it may have choked down slightly. Mr. Smith further stated that he did expect the longer distance of today’s race to suit the mare as he had always been of the opinion that it was best suited over longer distances. Stewards also asked C. Lindop, who confirmed Mr. Smith’s statements and the Stewards noted both explanations.

GENERAL:

Stewards opened an inquiry into evidence jockey G. Hoobin had presented to them at Mount Gambier on 3 October 2001. G. Hoobin was subsequently charged under ARR 175(g) with providing false and misleading evidence to the Stewards with respect to a medical certificate. Upon being found guilty G. Hoobin was fined the sum of $200.
