Port Augusta (SA) - Thursday 4 July 2002

Track: Good
Weather: Overcast
Rail: In the True Position.

RACE 1 – WEST END DRAUGHT SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP - 1100 metres

MUSTIN BUNDY (J. Potter) jumped away awkwardly and as a result was extremely slow to begin.

BENEFIT ROAD (N. Tomizawa) knuckled slightly on jumping.

In the vicinity of the 900 metres MARLBOROUGH GIRL (B. Claridge) was obliged to ease when tightened by SPECIAL LOVE (J. Burgess) on its outside, which was showing a tendency to lay in, and HAIRAN (K. Louca) on its inside, which was showing a tendency to race ungenerously and at that point, shifted out abruptly.

Rounding the home turn MARLBOROUGH GIRL (B. Claridge) shifted out making slight contact with BUSHER (B. Vale) resulting in both of those horses becoming unbalanced.

Mr. S. Oxlade, trainer of MILITARY POST, was advised by Stewards that a warning had been placed on that gelding in relation to its wayward manners at the barriers.

RACE 2 – LAMPARD’S PTY LTD SABIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to enable B. Vale, rider of the second placegetter BEAU INCA, to view the official print of the finish. As the Finish Lynx System had failed, a print was not available. B. Vale was given the opportunity of seeing the official video footage of the finish, in conjunction with the Judge, Mr. R. Cook. The Judge confirmed his placings and as B. Vale could not tender evidence to the contrary, Correct Weight was declared.

WISE CRACKER (J. O’Connor) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages of the race.

Racing inside the 100 metres WISE CRACKER (J. O’Connor) shifted in making contact with BEAU INCA (B. Vale) resulting in that gelding becoming unbalanced.

DANGER CHARGER (J. Potter) was momentarily held up for clear ground racing inside the 200 metres and then again approaching the 50 metres.

Mr. T. Haddy, trainer of WINARGO, which had been reluctant to approach the barriers, was advised by Stewards that a warning had been placed on that filly in relation to its wayward barrier behaviour.

RACE 3 – SMOKE-FREE 2Y&UP MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 metres

DEVENEY (J. Potter) stood flat-footed when the gates were released and missed the start several lengths.

RACE 4 – ROSSAIR FLYING HANDICAP - 1100 metres

M. Neilson, rider of COAL BLUE BAY, reported to Stewards subsequent to the event, that the gelding had shown a tendency to hang out in the early and middle stages of the race.

In the vicinity of the 300 metres COAL BLUE BAY (M. Neilson), which had commenced to tire quickly, was inconvenienced when tightened onto KING’S CHOICE (K. Louca), when taken out slightly by ONYX RIVER (C. Bryant), which had taken a tight run on its inside. M. Neilson, rider of COAL BLUE BAY was advised by Stewards of his obligations of riding his mounts out to the finish of a race.

RACE 5 – REX DAVIES CRASH REPAIRS CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1100 metres

Upon jumping away MISS CHELSEA (J. Lyon) shifted inwards resulting in PRETTY ORDINARY (C. Bryant) and KIRKALA (S. Lovegrove), which were racing on its inside, being inconvenienced.

An inquiry will be convened at Port Augusta Racecourse at 11.00 am on Sunday, 14th July 2002 to inquire into the reasons for H. Gower, rider of FREE MARKET, and S. Lovegrove, rider of KIRKALA, being dislodged from their mounts in the vicinity of the 800 metres. As a result of this incident CLASSIC DANZIG (J. Potter), PRETTY ORDINARY (C. Bryant) and CLAY ROSE (M. Hoppo) were hampered in attempting to avoid the fallen riders and riderless horses. H. Gower and S. Lovegrove were both conveyed to the Port Augusta Hospital for observation.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of FREE MARKET revealed that the gelding had sustained an injury to its near fore pedal bone. A veterinary inspection of KIRKALA revealed that filly had sustained minor abrasions to both forelegs and an examination of INGURAIN revealed that mare had minor abrasions to its near hind leg.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres INGURAIN (K. Louca), which was showing a tendency to lay in, shifted in slightly at the time as MISS CHELSEA (J. Lyon) shifted out slightly resulting in those two horses brushing together.

RACE 6 – IAN’S CHICKEN HUT CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

On jumping away FABIO PENNACCHIO (J. Potter) knuckled over badly.

AMEN BEV (J. Burgess) jumped away awkwardly and as a result was slow to begin.

Approaching the finish post ADEL MARIE (K. Louca) shifted out slightly at the same time as FABIO PENNACCHIO (J. Potter) shifted in abruptly resulting in ADEL MARIE (K. Louca) having to be steadied from the heels of FABIO PENNACCHIO. J. Potter, rider of that gelding, was advised by Stewards of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 7 – ELDERS LTD SQUATTER’S CUP - 1850 metres

When no suitable senior rider was available, Stewards permitted apprentice, J. Potter, to replace S. Lovegrove as the rider of TALISKA.

JEALTS EXPRESS (R. Faehr) was slow to begin.

KENSARM (K. Louca) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages of the event.

RACE 8 – TRAVELLER’S REST HOTEL CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1500 metres

When no suitable senior rider was available, Stewards permitted apprentice, M. Neilson, to replace S. Lovegrove as the rider of GOLDEN SKILL.

Prior to the start BOORADLEY (Maree Henderson) broke through the barriers, was quickly restrained and returned behind the barriers for a veterinary examination, which revealed that the gelding was fit to take its place in the field.

GOLDEN SKILL (M. Neilson) knuckled over badly on jumping away.

When the gates were released STAR REBEL (C. Bryant) shifted in onto WINESONG (M. Hoppo), who in turn shifted in onto TRUCENT’S TOUCH (N. Tomizawa), resulting in that gelding being inconvenienced.
