Supplementary Reports: Rosehill Gardens Saturday 20 April 2002: Race 7 BAC Systems
Handicap 1400m The Stewards today concluded an inquiry opened on Saturday
20 April 2002 into Mark de Montfort's ride on Storm Zero when further evidence was taken
from Mark de Montfort and evidence was taken from Betting Steward Mr T. Griffin. At the
earlier inquiry the Stewards accepted evidence from the owners of Storm Zero of
substantial betting support for that runner. Today M. de Montfort was again questioned
over his riding over the final 600m. He stated that rounding the home turn Xantra, which
had improved to his outside, was travelling too strongly for him to endeavour to shoulder
out, and though he endeavoured to follow up 2nd placegetter, Magic Heights, in the early
part of the straight and was at all times riding his mount along hands and heels, Storm
Zero had not accelerated as he anticipated. When questioned as to why he took hold near
the 200m, M. de Montfort stated that at that point Xantra shifted in and he had called out
to its rider, C. Brown. He was again obliged to stop riding over the final 50m when held
up as Magic Heights and Xantra both shifted ground. Mr Griffin gave the Stewards a
detailed report of betting transactions around Australia on the BAC Systems Handicap,
which did not indicate any particular weighting that was of concern to the Stewards. At
the conclusion of the inquiry M. de Montfort was told that, in the opinion of the
Stewards, in the circumstances his riding in the early part of the straight had lacked the
necessary vigour. He was further informed that when he took hold briefly at the 200m those
actions appeared overly tentative. M. de Montfort was advised further that his ride had
caused concern to the Stewards and that he must ride his mounts in such a manner so as to
leave no room for doubt. M. de Montfort was reprimanded and told that in similar
circumstances he would be expected to display more vigour and initiative than he did on
this occasion. Hawkesbury Sunday 21 April 2002: Race 5 Windsor R.S.L.
Sub-Branch ANZAC Memorial Class 1 & Maiden Plate 2000m The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the reason for
        M. Newnham being dislodged from Ultimus near the 400m. After initially taking evidence
from M. de Montfort (Geearco), C. Munce (Phorcys), P. Losh (Mezdorf), D. Beasley (Cyclone
Corsica) and App. S. Pollard (Rolling Thunder) the Stewards today interviewed M. Newnham
and found that near the 400m, as Ultimus improved to the outside of Rolling Thunder,
Rolling Thunder hung out and away from Beatnik, which had improved to that horse's inside.
As a consequence, Ultimus clipped the heels of Rolling Thunder, blundered badly and
dislodged M. Newnham. In the circumstances the Stewards did not attribute the incident to
rider error. RACE 1: Rockdale Handicap 1600m Wicked Wizard knuckled over on jumping. For some
distance passing the 200m King Of Passion was crowded when Fiddles was inclined to lay in
under pressure. King Of Passion lost the near-fore plate in running. As Mammoth (P.
Falvey) endeavoured to come to the outside of the heels of Wicked Wizard rounding the home
turn it ran out further than intended, bumped Murango out onto Gaytime causing that horse
to be hampered. P. Falvey was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. RACE 2: Kogarah Handicap 1600m Flying Mahal and Magic Tumbler were slow to begin. RACE 3: Arncliffe Handicap 1200m On jumping Escalante and Red Chequer were tightened between
Boreale and Citi Fella, which shifted out. Montego knuckled over on jumping. At he 1000m
Escalante got its head up when being restrained off the heels of Boreale (R. Quinn), which
shifted in. R. Quinn was advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.
At the 700m Red Chequer was steadied off the heels of Citi Fella. When questioned, S.
Treweek (Red Chequer) stated that his mount, which was dropping back in distance, did not
show any early speed and in his view was looking for additional ground. A post-race
veterinary examination of Red Chequer revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken.
When questioned as to why he allowed Master Maestro to improve around him passing the
600m, D. Beadman (To Be Fair) stated that with its big weight of 58½kgs he was reluctant
to go wide at that stage of the race and elected to wait to get a run through the field,
which eventuated shortly after straightening. RACE 4: Conference Venues & Bookings Services Handicap
1100m Noble Trust jumped awkwardly. Kenatius was slow to
begin. Shortly after the start Arigato shifted in and bumped Good Timing. Approaching the
900m Noble Trust had to be checked when tightened for room between Celestial Switch and
Good Timing, both of which shifted ground. Passing the 200m Contender was inconvenienced
when taken in by I Do Thee Wed. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Arathea, which
weakened after covering ground throughout, was displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab
sample was taken. RACE 5: Narwee Handicap 1800m Near the 1400m as Jake's Buddy improved around Nabob, Nabob
shifted off the fence, which obliged Eugene to race three wide from that point. A
post-race veterinary examination revealed Eugene had abraded its near-hind bumper. A swab
sample was taken. In the early part of the straight Idealistic, Mr. Attorney and Carmona
King had difficulty obtaining clear running. Near the 100m Vinaldi had to be steadied when
tightened for room between Mr. Attorney, which taken in slightly by Eugene, and
Idealistic, which shifted out. RACE 6: Brighton Handicap 1800m Knighty Night had difficulty obtaining clear running in
the early part of the straight. RACE 7: Hurstville Handicap 2400m Approaching the first turn Bi Bi Jarno had to be steadied
off the heels of Upstart (L. Beasley), which shifted in. L. Beasley was advised to ensure
he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed
Upstart, which raced disappointingly, was displaying a poor recovery rate. RACE 8: Carlton Handicap 1400m: No report. SUMMARY Reprimands: Race 1: P. Falvey (Mammoth) - shifting out (AR137(a)).
