 RACE 1: Tamarama Handicap
1800m Near the 50m Zulu Legend shifted out slightly and
made contact with 2nd placegetter Noble Touch. Prior to the declaration of correct weight the Stewards
viewed the patrol film to establish if there were grounds to lodge an objection on behalf
of Noble Touch. RACE 2: Jim Donohoe Handicap 1300m Redfern Lady, which made light contact
with the front of its gate, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit
to start. Hurricane Hayley jumped inwards at the start causing
Dream Beauty to be checked. Doreen Jewel jumped awkwardly hampering Jewel
Purpose. Making the first turn Redfern Lady overraced badly
when being restrained from the heels of Doreen Jewel. Hurricane Hayley was inclined to step over darker
patches on the track throughout running. Near the 200m Dream Beauty kicked up behind when
struck with the whip. Mr T. Donnelly, trainer of Hurricane Hayley,
which led today, explained that his instructions at the mare's most recent start at
Canterbury Park on 13 December were to lead, however, on that occasion Hurricane Hayley
dwelt slightly on jumping. RACE 3: Centennial Park Handicap 1800m As L. Beasley was overweight, D. Vargiu was substituted as
the rider of Southern Regard. L. Beasley was reminded that from 1
January the Stewards will recommence imposing penalties for breaches of the weight rules. At the 1400m Southern Regard was checked off the
heels of Stringy Bark. Magical Walk, which was following,
was hampered in consequence. Sugarland was held up for a run in the early part of
the straight. Over the final 50m Shakatail was held up on the
heels of Stringy Bark. When questioned concerning the performance of the winner Sugarland
as compared to its 8th placing at Rosehill Gardens on 19 December trainer Mr S.
Ritchie stated that today was Sugarland's third run back from a
spell and the improvement in fitness and also the increase in distance were to the mare's
favour. He added that in his view the opposition was moderate and that today's race was
run to suit. RACE 4: AJC Convention Centre Handicap 1800m Coveted was a late withdrawal at 9.18am on veterinary
advice. Halls Of Assembly pulled hard in the early and
middle stages. In the straight Larceny raced in restricted room
inside the heels of Halls Of Assembly and was not able to be fully tested. Passing the 200m Crimewave and Colosseum,
which were held up for a run, had to steady out across heels to obtain clear running. RACE 5: Jack Bourke Handicap 1400m Sirspec was inclined to get its head up and overrace in
the early stages. When being steadied off the heels of Mac's Success,
Handel shifted out slightly near the 700m resulting in Transmit being taken out
on to Superfine. Handel had difficulty obtaining clear running in
the early part of the straight. RACE 6: San Miguel Summer Cup 2400m As M. Newman was indisposed, K. Forrester was substituted
as the rider of Assilem. Power Of Pegasus jumped awkwardly and was crowded
for room shortly afterwards between Miss Zoe and Air War. Majestically did not obtain clear running until
approaching the 200m. Altiero was badly held up until near the 100m. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Miss
Zoe, H. Bowman stated that his mount pulled hard when trapped three
wide without cover and he was reluctant to allow the mare to stride forward as in the past
it has refused to settle when in front. Trainer Mr L. Bridge stated that the mare may not have
backed up from its run on Saturday and it was now his intention to spell Miss Zoe.
When questioned, G. Boss stated that even though he
obtained cover on the back |
