Supplementary Report: Royal Randwick Racecourse Saturday 26 January 2002: Race 7
Macau Jockey Club Trophy 1400m Trainer Mr G. Walter reported that subsequent to the event Cheverny
was found to be lame in the off-hind leg. Mr Walter was advised that a veterinary
certificate would be required before Cheverny is permitted to race again. Wyong Racecourse Tuesday 22 January 2002: Race 9 Static
Water Supply Program Handicap The Stewards today concluded an inquiry into H. Bowman's
handling of Royal Magenta in the straight. After being initially disappointed at
the entrance to the straight between Defer and Hunter Hermitage,
Royal Magenta then shifted back in across the heels of Defer,
was further disappointed for a run between Turn The Tap and Defer,
both of which shifted ground slightly, and, therefore, went to the line untested. The
Stewards advised H. Bowman that as there was an opportunity to also shift into clear
running to the inside of Turn The Tap he should be aware of all available options. LATE RIDING CHANGES: As M. Scorse was ill the following rider substitutions were
        approved:Race 2: H. Bowman on Birubi Son;
Race 7: B. York on Lapwing.
As M. Squires was ill the following rider substitutions
        were approved:Race 4: L. Cassidy on Sialis;
Race 7: H. Bowman on Sky Kiss.
RACE 1: Rockdale Handicap 1000m Al Adham was slow to begin. Wild Heart hung out rounding the home turn. RACE 2: Bexley Handicap 1400m Shannanigan and Wakamiya were slow to begin. About the 900m Big Bal Bowski was
briefly tightened when Wakamiya (B. York) shifted in. B. York was advised to ensure
that he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. Over the concluding stages Shannanigan hung in badly
under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination of Big
Bal Bowski revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. When questioned
regarding the disappointing performance of Big Bal Bowski, P.
Falvey stated that he did not have the pace to go with Wakamiya early and after
being crossed by that runner was disappointing in that it did not respond to his riding in
the straight. Trainer Mr G. Portelli stated that in his view too much use was made of Big
Bal Bowski in the early stages and that the gelding was never allowed to travel within
itself. Mr Portelli was advised that Big Bal Bowski must barrier trial to the
satisfaction of the Stewards before it is permitted to race again. When questioned regarding the performance of the winner, Charo
Style, J. Innes stated that as noted in the Stewards report when
first up from a spell at Canterbury Park on 10 January 2002 Charo Style struck
interference at the start and then was held up in the straight before being beaten 2.9
lengths into 7th placing by Astralobe. Trainer Mr N. Voigt added
that the additional journey and the particularly fast early pace had been to Charo Style's
advantage. RACE 3: Kogarah Handicap 1550m Post-race veterinary examinations of Eclipso and Salad,
which both weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was
taken from Salad. RACE 4: Arncliffe Handicap 1300m A dual objection was lodged by B. York, rider of 3rd
placegetter, Counter Force, against Valedict (D. Beadman)
being declared 2nd, and Hijacker (L. Beasley) being declared 1st alleging
interference in the straight. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing
the videos the Stewards dismissed both objections. In reaching the decision the Stewards
found that whilst near the 250m Valedict shifted in and bumped Counter Force,
the pressure was relieved almost immediately and, bearing in mind the three-quarters of a
length margin, the interference did not affect the finishing positions. Stewards further
found that over the final 100m Hijacker shifted out under pressure crowding the
racing room of Counter Force, however, they could not be satisfied
bearing in mind a margin of on a length between the runners, that the incident had
affected the finishing positions of the respective horses. L. Beasley (Hijacker)
was severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he must stop riding and
straighten his mounts. Valedict jumped awkwardly. Shortly after the start Raspberry Man got its head
up when crowded for room between Wyangan Pines and Red Leader,
which shifted in. Rounding the first turn Counter Force got its head
up when being checked off the heels of Red Leader. In the straight Wyangan Pines was inclined to lay
out and weakened badly. A post-race veterinary examination of Wyangan Pines revealed
no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Mark Of Power, which was inclined
to lay in, was unable to obtain clear running in the straight, and near the 200m was
struck over the nose by the whip of D. McLellan (Red Leader). RACE 5: Hurstville Handicap 1550m When questioned concerning the performance of Cojones,
        G. Boss stated that his mount was not suited by the slow pace, but travelled reasonable
well to the 600m. He added that he was somewhat taken by surprise when Dawnfire improved
quickly round him at that point, but after electing to then follow Dawnfire,
Cojones was disappointing in that it did not respond to his riding in the straight.
A post-race veterinary examination of Cojones revealed no abnormality. A swab
sample was taken. RACE 6: Carlton Handicap 1800m Approaching the entrance to the straight Strange was
momentarily crowded for room when Time Signal shifted in away from Keep Rocking.
Redinburgh was held up for a run until near the
250m. Near the 100m Manntavani and Lion Rock came
together. RACE 7: Brighton Handicap 1400m Lapwing was slow to begin. Rounding the home turn Aromatherapy was taken out by
Lapwing. Approaching the 150m Lady Viola shifted out to
improve into a run between Lapwing and Aromatherapy and in so doing made
contact with Aromatherapy. For some distance thereafter Lady
Viola and Aromatherapy bumped resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. As Lady
Viola got the better of Aromatherapy a bump from Aromatherapy on the
hindquarters of Lady Viola had the effect of turning that horse's shoulders out and
a few strides later Aromatherapy fell when it again made contact with the
hindquarters of Lady Viola. When questioned regarding the performance of Palace
Consort, C. Munce stated that his mount took up a favourable
position, but when asked for an effort did not respond to his riding and was most
disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of Palace Consort revealed no
abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Mr S. Perry, representing trainer Mr P. Perry, could
offer no explanation for the performance. The Stewards ruled that Palace Consort must
barrier trial to their satisfaction before it is permitted to race again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Lady Viola to
have suffered abrasions to the bulbs of the heel of the near-hind leg. SUMMARY Severe Reprimands: Race 4: L. Beasley (Hijacker) shifting out causing crowding
        (AR137(a)).
Trials: Race 2: Big Bal Bowski (trainer G. Portelli) poor performance.
Race 7: Palace Consort (trainer P. Perry) poor
performance. Certificates: Race 7 Randwick 26/1/02: Cheverny (trainer G. Walter) lame off-hind leg.
