Sandown (VIC) - Wednesday 6 March 2002
Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: True

Race 1 - Princess Talaria Super Vobis Handicap:

No report.

Race 2 - Belle Silhouette Handicap:

"Avita" broke through the front of the barriers and galloped for a short distance before being caught by the Clerk of the Course. "Avita" was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run. Subsequent to the event the Club's veterinary surgeon reported "Avita" had sustained wounds to the near fore and off hind legs.

Race 3 - Chicquita Super Vobis Handicap:

On jumping away "Monroe" shifted in and bumped "Danzelle". Also on jumping away, "Capto" shifted out and brushed "Bonny Brew". "Molly Ellen" then shifted out and tightened "Capto" onto "Bonny Brew".

Near the 200 metre mark "Pure Grace" had to shift out to obtain a clear run.

S. Baster, rider of the second placegetter "Blue Jewel", requested to view the Stewards Patrol Video prior to correct weight with a view to lodge an objection. S. Baster did not proceed with the objection and correct weight was declared.

Race 4 - Lawrence Super Vobis Handicap

T. Barry was declared the rider of "Bidaily".

"Hillsgrove" began awkwardly and lost ground. "Night Chaser" was reluctant to jump away with the field and lost considerable ground.

Near the 1000 metres "Sabre Sonic" had to be eased off the heels of "Samdin" which, after initially being taken in by "Fonome", shifted in away from that gelding.

"Samdin" raced greenly in the middle stages of the race.

After passing the 200 metres, "Sabre Sonic" had to be checked when disappointed for a run due to "Charlies Chance" weakening quickly at that stage.

Jason Patton rider of Fonome was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that approaching the 200 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of "Samdin" resulting in "Samdin" having to be checked. Jason Patton was suspended from riding in races for a period to commencing midnight on 11th March, 2002 and expires midnight on 26th March, 2002.

When deciding penalty Stewards took into account Jason Pattons good riding record.

Race 5 - Magic Ruler Handicap:

Mr P Cannon, representing trainer R.W. Smerdon advised Stewards that subsequent to scratching time, it was found that "I'm Honour High (NZ)" was sore in the near fore leg. Stewards withdrew the horse from the race at 12.48 p.m. Mr R.W. Smerdon will produce a veterinary certificate in respect of "I'm Honour High (NZ)".

"Hawaiian Eye" and " "Lord Ardsley (NZ) " were slow to begin.

Near the 1000 metres "Major" was tightened for room by "Ming's Finale" (A. Findlay) which initially shifted in when not sufficiently clear and then raced on the inside of "Natrass Lane" (T. Barry) which was also shifting in. Both A. Findlay and T. Barry were notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in the future.

Approaching and rounding the home turn "Declare" had a tendency to lay out.

Near the 200 metres "Major" was hampered when tightened for room between "Ming's Finale" which shifted out slightly and "Lord of the Pines" which was laying in under pressure.

Race 6 - E T Barnard Handicap:

"All Play" began awkwardly and lost ground.

"Archie's Girl" got her head up in the middle stages of the race when being restrained. As a result, "Change of Control" got its head up when easing off the heels of that mare.

In the early part of the straight "Night's Upon Us" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run

Race 7 - Resolute Handicap:

After passing the 1300 metres, "Taibach" had to check when tightened for room between "Phenomenon" which had been steadied at that stage and "Frere Jaques" (K. McEvoy) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. Stewards had some doubt as to whether K. McEvoy was fully responsible for the interference and took no action other than to severely reprimand K. McEvoy and notify him that he must exercise more care in the future.

Approaching the winning post "Macmiki" was hampered when tightened for room between "Frere Jacques" and "Prince Quay (NZ)" (M. Pegus) which shifted out under pressure. M. Pegus will be notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in the future.

Race 8 - Sir Blink Handicap:

Acting on a confirmed telephone call, Lord Grable, which was sore in the off hind leg when taken out of his stable subsequent to scratching time, was withdrawn by Stewards from the race at 8.37 a.m. Mr T. Kelly will produce a veterinary certificate in respect of Lord Grable.

"Built Him" hung in under pressure in the early part of the straight.

During the running of the race "Winkler (NZ)" lost its off fore plate and "Flash of Light" lost its near fore plate.

SWAB SAMPLES -

Post-race swab samples were taken from all winnners.

FINES & EXPLANATIONS -

Race 4: Mr J. Hawkes trainer of "Samdin" was fined $30 for using Club colours.
