RACE 1 – McLEAY CARPETS DISTANCE MAIDEN PLATE – 2050 metres

No report.

RACE 2 – McLEAY CARPETS / SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1200 metres

FRENCH BELLE (B. Claridge), which raced greenly in the early stages, shifted in and hampered SPORTING JESTER (M. Neilson) in the vicinity of the 1200 metres.

In the vicinity of the 1100 metres NAFIR (NZ) (J. Maund) shifted in and hampered RUBITON ROYALE (C. Lindop), which commenced to race ungenerously for a short distance.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres MATTERHORN (Darren Holland) shifted in slightly and hampered RUBITON ROYALE (C. Lindop), which in turn shifted in slightly and hampered SPORTING JESTER (M. Neilson).

In the vicinity of the 600 metres M. Neilson, rider of SPORTING JESTER, dropped his whip. As a result that rider was fined the sum of $50 for carelessness.

Stewards questioned Trainer Mr. B. Dunn after it was discovered that SPORTING JESTER had been incorrectly saddled, in that the lead bag which M. Neilson had weighed out with had not been included in the horse’s saddling. On inquiry it was established that Trainer Mr. B. Dunn had inadvertently left the lead bag off the gear of SPORTING JESTER. Mr. B. Dunn was charged under ARR 140A with negligence in saddling SPORTING JESTER and fined $250.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of YOUNG LOVER revealed the filly was suffering from slight respiratory distress.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of MOUNTAIN EAGLE (NZ) revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3 – PIKES WINES CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 1350 metres

THURSDAY ISLAND (USA) (S. Price) was slow to begin.

PEKOE (M. Neilson) stood flat-footed at the start and as a result lost considerable ground. Mr. D. Clarken, Trainer of PEKOE, was advised that a warning had been placed on the gelding in relation to its barrier manners.

In the vicinity of the 700 metres RUBIN JAMES (J. Potter) shifted in momentarily and hampered BROOKMAN (M. Hoppo).

RACE 4 – McLEAY CARPETS CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 metres

BOORADLEY (J. Lyon) jumped out at the start and inconvenienced SOULS (M. Hoppo), which in turn shifted out and inconvenienced MOUSE KING (J. Maund).

Subsequent to the race an endoscopic examination of LINDROS revealed the gelding was suffering from pharyngitis.

RACE 5 – MALAYSIA AIRLINES CLASS 5 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

The start of this race was delayed due to DAMOCLES (J. O’Connor) proving difficult to load. Mr. W. Bogarts, Trainer of DAMOCLES, was advised that a warning had been placed on the gelding in relation to its barrier manners.

HAGGLE (T. Creek) was slow to begin.

RACE 6 – DUNLOP UNDERLAY CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

CIELO LAHA (J. Potter) showed a tendency to over-race in the early and middle stages.

ENGRAVER (C. Lindop), which had become extremely unbalanced in the vicinity of the 200 metres, was eased out of the race over the concluding stages. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of ENGRAVER revealed the gelding had returned lame in the near foreleg.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of EL ENTRADOR revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 – DUNLOP UNDERLAY MAIDEN PLATE 3-Y-O & UP – 1200 metres

OUR PERSEUS (N. Tomizawa) was slow to begin.

TURTLE DIARY (R. Faehr) was hampered at the start when LIGHTNING LUCAS (W. Kerford) jumped out, at the same time as BILLSCAY (M. Neilson) jumped in.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres ASTRAL VENTURE (J. Lyon), which was showing a tendency to lay in, shifted in and tightened BILLSCAY (M. Neilson), resulting in that gelding having to be checked. As a result, HISHI EL (B. Vale) and DOT COM FEVER (M. Hoppo) were also hampered and lost some ground. J. Lyon was reminded of his obligations when placed in a similar situation in future.

BILLSCAY (M. Neilson) was momentarily held up for a clear run on the home turn.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of DEVARAJA DAAN revealed the gelding had returned sore in the lower back.
